You should not be tattooing if you don't know the answer to that question.
There are many reputable pigments that will help a professional artist produce a great tattoo. I personally don't stick to one brand, instead, I prefer certain colors from different manufacturers.
The following are solid brands:
Starbright
Dermaglo
Stable
Intenze
Millennium
Iron butterfly
Kuro sumi
National

heres an interesting one.

no ink is the best ink, or it would be the only one used and sold.
for the first person who said scream ink, thats rediculous.
scream ink doesn't make you better at tattooing, and i think you should quit giving people advice, because you dont know what your talking about.

my advice:

don't use scream ink. its dull, everytime ive used it, it wasn't any good, and its real pasty. i would say starbrite would be a good choice. the color is normally real vivid and has a good life expectancy, assuming the collector has practiced proper aftercare.

The new Skin Candy Tokyo blends And Kabuki Black's are amazing. However like dude said up top there isn't just one brand of ink that beats the rest. I like Starbrite's yellow and whites, then I prefer mom's blues and greens, and also Intenze, Stable, Dynamic, & Fantasia colors. It's all about the artist bro. I mean I've seen so many forums asking what's the best ink? what's the best ink? for days, and there is really only one answer for that and every real artist will tell you this, THERE ISNT A BEST INK. Cause what ever goes in good for you I may not like, and whatever I may recomend to u umay not like.... And about Scream ink, It's the same shit as MOM's EXACT SAME

Anybody who works in this industry knows that only through time and experience, trial and error will each person find their favorite colors of each brand of ink. Every artist I know, including myself, builds a customs set of inks for their use cobbled together from all the well known and reliable brands including: Starbrite, Intenze, Eternal, Millenium, Dynamic, Stable, Waverly, Skin Candy, Classic. That's just to name a few...BTW...I've been using the new Alla Prima black and i love it...anybody out there tried any of the colors yet? And i almost forgot Silverback is a kickass greywash set. Just my opinion..thought I'd throw it out there.

I've found that most of the Eternal colours are brilliant, with the exception of light red, light purple and the yellows are great for highlighting but shit for solid block colour. Intenze black has to be the best black I've used so far and I've just started using the Starbright colours which, so far, I've found worked brilliantly, the white has to be the best white out there!!!

Thanks for the honest answer humbletat. here what I discovered so far: kuro sumi ink is great if you want the fadded japanese look (look at books on japanese tatoos), The black turns blue, I hear talon turns a little blue, Skin candy japanese ink too & fades, The only one that stays true black is "Intenze Zuper Black" but it is thick chalky shit - your have to use lots of vaseline to wipe it off the skin. Skin candy pink does not stick nor there light green but the bellbottom blue is phoenomenal, Prizm & Intenze white did not stick. skin candy white kept a fadded egg white look even after 3 coats. Stop being stingy w/ the info guys! Tell us what brands have the best colors that stick & stay true! Otherwise don't reply & waste our time telling us the diffeance between ink & pigment terminology nonsense!

Classic Color Systems Tribal Black. It seems too thin at first, but is so easy to put in, wipe, and clean up, and it stays black and beautiful. The white is almost too easy to pack in and heals fast. Their bright Yellow is the only yellow I've ever used that I can see immediately while I'm working, and it's blinding. They have some other nice colors, but those three are hot.

com'on boyz..... If you've been payin' attention to the the first 100 people you've worked on; has anyone & or anyobody that ever called you back took care of the tattoo to begin with?
So,heres my limited 18 yrs exp. all ink can work in the the right medium i.e.needle size, tat style and client skin health. it's a crap shoot some where between good needles(1st) Decent and concistant ,skin flow, a little luck and the experience to notice the ink actually penitrating or repelling the individuals dermis within the first 2 or 3 minutes. It is trial and error per person some black stays beautiful some doesnt.remember, each person is different just the same as the design you are are appyling. Yes I know that this is not a direct answer but be patient dont be affraid of trying old-er trusted brands such as national tattoo supply electic blue is muted on some but go slow for opt' brightness(beacause you can still buy dry pigmnents in bulk and disprese accordingly you can be the judge ) 0r adding brighter highlights fom starbright like canary or lime, just dont ever mix with new brands over all with other brands they cause problems for most. do so in seperate settings if ness.

as an apprentice i've done allot of research, i put allot of work into my craft. so stop asking questions about tattooing. work and learn like everyone else, and if you can't take it...don't.

our shop uses intenze...and each artist picks from other brands. Not one company does everything well. Ink is a knowledge you get from putting in the hours.

I can't attest to it personally as I don't tattoo, but I can say the large majority of our 60+ tattooers at the shop use a combo of intenze and eternal. I've also seen a few people starting to use Alla Prima. But thats more of an observation than opinion.

Kuro Sumi tattoo outlining ink is not a bad option the ink seems to flow in nicely!
However there are a lot of inks on the market and like mentioned by somebody before what ink may be good for one artist may not be good for another my advice to you is to experiment and find out what ink best suits you!

kuro sumi is great for outlining and greywashes, their colors are dull, at least the ones ive tried especially shikon purple andtheir reds look like mud, but the outlining ink rules handsdown (not the double sumi black! the Outlining black is good)(kokai sumi is a knockoff and heals blue, which is good if u want it to lookold) Classic bright greens are good, but their brite red and blood red never stay in no matter how hard or soft your running. same with classic yellows and oranges. for red i like intenze. for white starbrite. i just tried out iron butterfly blood red and i wasnt impressed with how it healed. im on a quest for a good red that flows, and doesnt heal pink! any info thats based on actual experience and not paid endorsements would be greatly appreciated!

I've really only been Too'in since October, 09, I started with starbrite and have used only starbrite to say it is the shit I would say is a farce. I can see how the struggling could want to blame an ink. I would have to say that your technique is the problem, look at what you doing and until you can with absolute certainty say it's the ink then for sure let us all know cuase if it sucks all should be aware, perhaps if one of your clients turned florescent glowing green and grew a third arm, that might be good knowledge to have. For all that approve of the inks they use/wear I'm glad that all has worked out for you.
I do although have a question, other then fading what are other problems had with inks? Fading sounds to be either a skin problem or depth problem, I've had ones I swore were in, and they almost disappeared, all a depth issue. Did one twice and after the second time the guy told me he does concrete work, it's on his forearm. Sounds to be a skin issue, I don't care how bad you suck at tattooing you out ink in a gun and rub that damn thing all over someone it's going to leave a mark, and for it to all fade off? TWICE?
Since October I've done over 100 too's. I now have my lic. I'm looking for a shop or a way around this, I'm a merried parent of two girls. I own a home, to pay for an apprenticeship is not an option for me. I know how much yall hate people like me, I'm doing what I can to keep true to the practice. I like drawing, to get paid to draw. I have nothing more to say about that, if anyone would want to see what I've done I have a few pics on Myspace - myspace.com/mikewelchii, I would appriciate any comments on what I've done and will do I have some cool ones coming up.

Thank you,
Mike

ive been tattooing since i was 12 years old,im now 50! from proven
experience i can tel you 99% of the time a problem with the ink going in and staying in,is the artist not knowing how to lay it!
they seem to forget, while they are into the art, that the ink WILL
NOT flow uphill. You MUST keep the skin TIGHT and its all about
plucking and tucking at a 45 degree angle with clockwise circles
if your right handed.
the other 1% has to do with the ink.

each brand will have something to offer, stay away from china sellers that copy other ink brand names, and do ur research before you try a new brand, i have tried several, started with starbrite, moms and skincandy for the most part i didnt like any of them, ive kept only a few colors of each that i have been happy with, my favorite i have found by far is fusion ink, thier colors are amazing and i have not found a white that goes in more solid and fast. i use most of thier base colors, the majority of ink i use is intenze or eternal. you cant base this off everything u buy but i have found generally with inks the more it costs the better it is. basicly dont try and save a buck when it comes to ur tattoo supplies! hope this helped.

ok now, alot of you guys are rediculous. scream ink? whatr u buyin shit on e bay? i agree with a couple statements made about there is no best ink...theres deff a good variety of pigments from diff companies...and depending on the piece your doing theres plenty of choices. intenz and moms are for sure the most stable pigments out there but like all pigments there is deff a few shadey colors that jus dont seem to work out too well from any brand. (red) now that ive tried and used eternal inks i would have to say hands down best ink to use for colorwork. there all natural pigments and no reactions to the tattoos from any color. stay bold and bright for years as long as the collector knows proper aftercare. I use a set of primary 10 and have had no trouble. I dont see the point in these huge sets of 65 colors these guys are making....if u dnt know your color theory and cant mix ur own colors what are u even doing tattooing??

like everyone said it just depends on what works for you, ever great artist uses all diff kinds of inks. some inks are better in diff brands but it all leads to what works for you.

and the guy that asked about prism ink. I would not use it again or buy it again. I have used it and I dont like it but it might work for you.

right now im rockn Eternal and Intenze. fuckn works for me haha

Well I am new to tattooing and I appreciate all the views. I do agree that no ink is going to make you a better artist, I am starting this after 15 years of airbrushing everything and some days things just dont come together and work right, thats when you say have a break and get it together. I have seen from viewing forums that Intenze, Starbite and Sumo Kumi if thats spelled correctly are the most popular. As I want to be a clean artist and give customers the best quality and cleanliness the Intenze sounds like great Ink as well as the other two. Thanks for all the info!

I use Eternal and Kuro Sumi ink, the Kuro is the best lining ink ive used, The Scream inks mentioned are thin and watery , in my experience they have healed up in the same way , pasty , I dumped all my bottles of Scream for that reason , i wouldnt let my apprentice use them.................DONT PENNY PINCH ON THE INK............

Well the person above asked a question and got a lot of answers even the smart ass kind, which I'm sure he or she didn't need. We don't use Skin Candy, don't like the healing process of it. We use a few different brands, which are Intenze, Starbrite, Mom's, Kuro Sumi and Talens. They are great to use and the reason we use different brands is the color choices.

We have never used an ink on a client we haven't first used on us to be sure of how it applies, stays and so forth. We suggest you do the same this way you do not offer anything you won't use. Saving money isn't always a good thing. Remember a good tattoo goes to a few but a bad tattoo goes to everyone!

Good luck with you ink choices

hey...

i have seen this far, by reading everyone's stuff, that eternal, intenze and kuro sumi rocks... i dont have a lot of intormation about "most used" ink, since i'm brazilian, but thank god i used kuro sumi for a while... it led me to HATE my now used brazilian ink. wich is no good, even for smaller works...

as for greywash ink, i have never used silverback ink, but it seems to rock, as some preety neat guys use that. and its not really expensive

so, i am looking for buying an ink set from eternal or intenze. so it would be much more affordable to me. wich one would you buy, intenze or eternal?

The best ink i have found, and used has been intenze ink. The true black intenze keep's a dark outline, and it's great. The same with the coloring. It keeps good color to it with whatever color you use.

To the guy asking about prizim inks, personally I like them except their whites and yellows. Greens, blues, reds, are good, black not so much. Whites are gone in a year or two if your lucky, Yellow you tend to get about 3 years at best, black turns blue pretty quick too. This is just from my experiance and the tattoo's i've done on myself with their ink. Kuro Sumi has damn good blacks, gotta go with intenze whites and yellows, Immortal has done the best FOR ME on all colors so far. Nuclear for blacklight ink.

P.S. Black light ink is pretty good except that it fades a little faster than regular inks. mine is at two years strong so far, the whites not as vibrant as the others in the black light but its still good.

Scream ink is alright-but if I had it my way I wouldn't use scream ink. scream ink is light....and can be very light-I guess scream ink is okay if your looking for that very very very light color. lol. I am not hating on scream ink but it wouldn't be the first ink product brand I would choose. As of now scream ink would be the last thing I would purchase out of all the inks. sorry scream ink....I hope your guys ink gets better in quality. "From another artist that knows"lol

i,m a tattooist myself, selftaut, custom artist have been for many years, ive tryed alot of inks and i stick to what works for me and they are, starbright, eternal, kuri sumi, and skin candy black collection only, skin candy colours dont realy do it for me dude, starbright and eternal have always done a good job and worked well for me and still do..if ur having problams putting the ink in try looking at ur tattoo machines,if its a shit machine its a shitty job, And ive had alot of tattoo guns and what works sweet as for me is-alan dixon shader, small v sunskin liner, hoodlam karlof soft shader, hoodlam biomek (packer), those are some of the guns that work sweet for me

for those that ask the same question over and over again, there is no best ink. the ink depends on the person and how there skin takes it. some brands have colors that hold better than others while the other colors dont if you know what i mean. and as for skin candy, it has a lot of added ingredients that some people have allergic reactions to so you need to be careful using it. and stay away from the knock off brands. you want good ink you wont find it for cheap.
