Demand for tattoo art keeps needles humming

"Dave Clark got his first tattoo in 1978. Since then, he has gotten 86 more.

As he sat behind the counter at Tattoo Dave's Fleshworks in Port Huron, the colorful designs danced around his forearms and knuckles whenever he moved. Some of his artwork was displayed on the wall and some on his skin.

Clark doesn't just get tattoos, he also gives them. Two years ago, he opened Tattoo Dave's Fleshworks after operating Black River Tattoo Co. for eight years.

Clark, who has inked about 40 of his own tattoos, said he does about 1,600 tattoos a year -- a number that, to him, indicates business is good and getting better."
