Swelling After a Tattoo

Posted by Virgo0972 from IP: 70.80.61.16 on 08/01/06
Montreal, Canada

Hi there,

This past Saturday I got my 5th tattoo...a beautiful portrait of my daughter. Everything went very well, and the tattoo is awesome, and is healing wonderfully, except last night I noticed that my foot was very swollen. The tattoo is on my left leg, on the side of my calf between my ankle & knee. It's about 6 inches tall.

The swelling seemed to have started last night, and I noticed at work today that my foot has almost doubled in size, from my ankle down to my toes. What is very ironic, is there is very little swelling in the area of the tattoo. My right foot is fine, so this is why I have to wonder if it because of the tattoo.

I've checked out many sight, and swelling seems to be typical, but I'm concerned because the swelling is not right at the sight of the tat.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Virgo

Perfectly normal...that is as long as it does not last for more than 2 or 3 days...and does the swelling go down if you elevate your foot?...if so your body is creating histamines to attack the invader...your tattoo... and often if the tattoo is anywhere below the knee the swelling migrates down due to gravity...hope this helps a bit...but you should also consult your artist...TAz

I am dealing with the same thing. Icing it doesn't seem to help much. It's been 3 days now and my ankle is still the twice the size it should be. I'll likely be heading to the Dr. tomorrow unless things show some improvement by then.

I just got a tattoo done on my calf on saturday and am having some problems with swelling in my foot as well as around the tattoo, i know that my artist said that the tattoo may swell but is it normal for the foot to, its been about three days now and its still swollen is that bad? Might i add its hard for me to keep off of it becuase i walk to and from and at work, could this be why it hasnt went down yet.

I too am experiencing the same thing after I had a tattoo on my ankle and half way up my calf 2 days ago.
I spoke to the tattooist and he said it's quite normal and to keep off the leg as much as possible for the swelling to go down....it's so painful to walk!
I'm having the day off work to rest the leg as I'm on my feet at workm constantly.

I'll have to join in on the pain. I too just got a tat on my calf 2 days ago, and it is swollen and I am concerned also, that's why I'm here seeking advice. I don't want to go to the doctor and puss out about it if there is no concern. So whatever advice you have, i'll take, it's my first and it came out awsome.

Joining in on this one. Sounds like everyone here is swollen 2-3 times the size of normal. I was reading about infections, symptoms are swelling, sore lymph nodes and fever. Has anyone been to the doctor yet to confirm infection or has their swelling gone down by just staying off it? Thanks

Just got a large tattoo done from the top of my foot, around the ankle and slightly up my calf. outlining is done and had some work covered and shaded around my ankle. It is totally swollen and a little warm. I think this seems to be normal and is painful to walk for a minute or 2, if I have been sitting too long or have had it elevated. Is this normal? I do hair, so unfortunately, I am ALWAYS standing. I think this is why I am still having pain and swelling. It has been 4 days now. Pretty sure it is NOT infected.

I had a tatoo done on my shoulder eight years ago, ever so often it still swells and itches. the outline really swells most. I heard that red ink can cause the problem. do any of you have this problem? It does not have any pain just swelling and itching once in a while. thanks

this is an all to common experience for me as I tattoo my own lower legs and know everytime what pain I'm in for.......unfortunatly lower legs tatts and gravity are not good friends I get fluid build up so bad it leaks from my tatts....it's taken me 6 days on crutches to get over my last 5hrs... but I also had an allergic reaction to yellow pigment which made it much worse...and each time you use the pigment the reaction gets worse..(this is my 3rd time)...but my doctor is great he's trying to develop a way to join Clobetasone with the art of tattooing to reduce the allergic reaction from certain pigments....

P.S if you ever have this sort of reaction to tattoo's keep it DRY!!!!!!
as we all know infection likes to grow in moist warm areas...........
and Infection will cause alot more damage to your tatt than fluid build up.....keep it DRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi ! I did a tattoo on my leg above the ankle. i have several tatts anf this is the first one to swell up around my ankle. i like alot of you work all day and stand on it. WHAT I DID TO HELP IT GO DOWN! so i slept in pants i took a string tied it to my belt loop on the back then tied it to the bottom of my pants and slept on my stomach. So my leg stays elevated all night when i wake up the swelling is gone. i found that ice does not work at all. it is just keeping it elevated. i had my leg straight up foot in the air. i'm sure you dont have to do the pants and string thing but its all i could think of to keep my leg up lol..... well good luck with the tatts

Swelling is normal, yes. What to look for in infections is if it's oozing yellow/green, if swelling doesn't reduce for a few days, and if it's extremely hot to the touch. It may be a little warm, but if you have all those symptoms, see a doc! I just got my 10th tat two days ago, and it takes up my ankle and foot. My other foot already has a tat on it and it did swell some. This one definately has more swelling, but is also a larger tat. Luckily I know it isn't infected because when I elevate or ice it, swelling reduces.
It's going to be a little sore. Think about when you were a kid and scraped your knee or elbow, or (i've done this) the top of your foot. It's very painful and swells, especially on foot tats because of the small amount of fat/skin on your bones and tendons. Make sure you're cleaning it and putting antibacterial ointment on it, NO ALCOHOL ON IT, it'll dry it out. Foot, ankle, and lower leg tats are hardest to care for because they get dirty so easily. I clean mine out every couple hours and apply new ointment and have never had problems.

Hope this helps some! Good luck!

Just had my first tattoo on my right calf. The recovery is a bit more painful than I was expecting. My foot/ankle too are swollen 2-3 times it's normal size. I'm glad to see this is normal.

My main issue is my calf muscle. It tightens up and I have to limp it off before I can walk semi-normally. It even tightens up just standing, and I have to flex my foot back and forth to make it go away.

How long is recovery expected to go on for?? I guess I didn't pick the best spot to get my first tat. lol

I just got my fourth tattoo 2 days ago. Im worried about the same thing swelling near the tattoo. I wouldnt worry too much about yours give it a few days if it doesnt go away or it gets worse, then I would go to the doctor. When i got my last tattoo it was on my ankle it started with swelling then it became very hard to walk.. after a few days my entire leg and foot was so swollen I couldnt bear it anymore i went to the emergency room.. i had a staff infection. i was on crutches for about a week... and my tattoo looked bad afterwards... but really it was my fault.. as long as you keep your tattoo clean, away from animal hairs, etc. then you should be fine. hope this helps.

I got a tatoo on my forearm on Saturday and I have significant swelling around the tatoo area, it 's red and hot to the touch. I am thinking it's because it needs rest and elevation b/c it is fine when I get up from sleeping and worse after work (where I use my arm constantly). Just talking out loud here. I'm taking ibuprofin for the swelling/pain and elevating it and using a and d ointment in case of infection (which i doubt).

i also got a tattoo on the outside of my calf/ankle. its my second one and my first was on the inside of my other ankle. my first one didnt really swell but this one is a much larger tattoo and has swollen to about twice the normal size. i initally thought that my mom was right and that i had gotten hepatits and now am going to die... well, after reading everyone elses comments i dont think im going to die. but i am having a verry hard time getting the swelling to go down it takes hours of elevation ust for it to go down a little bit. im constantly on my feet at work, so i feel like resting it at home is almost pointless. ive had it for 4 days now and its barely gone down. i dont have any thing else going on with it though, like its not red or anything. but having one kankle is just a little upsetting...

Just got a tattoo 2 days ago on my left foot and ankle. I'm not done yet I still have to go higher until I reach my knee. I am slowly putting color into my under the sea tattoo. Glad to know that this is a common thing (swelling) and that I'll just be walking around with a clubbed-foot for a while. It doesn't hurt to touch. There are parts that are really squishy. Feels like my foot is a water balloon.

Hey all. On Sunday I got my third tat. It's on my right leg,,,outside calf area. It was a 4 hour session and my skin was pretty sensitive and feeling brutalized after it all. Walking was a bit difficult. Monday I discovered that my leg had doubled in size, I had swelling at the ankle and the skin around the tat was quite red and hot to the touch. I spend my days on my feet (I am a teacher) and so it was quite uncomfortable. I could feel like my skin was almost at its limit...and it couldn't stretch anymore and something was gonna give.
I didn't ice it. I thought about it...but decided against it. What I DID do was slather on a fragrance free Bacitracin (bacterial) and Neomycin (fungal) ointment. I made a sacrifice and managed to sleep with my leg elevated that night. My mattress is on the floor so I just put my legs up on a chair and slept alternating between left side and back.
The next day there was a visible improvement. The swelling had gone down quite a bit and the skin around the tat wasn't red and angry looking anymore. I WOULD get this pins/needles feeling everything I stood up...and the leg would be quite painful for a minute or so...but then it would pass. I wash it and don't put anything on it during the day and put the ointment on at night.
It's now been 4 days since the tat and there is no swelling at all. Minor sensitivity to touch and peeling. Will probably be fully healed in just after a week since it was done.

I got a tattoo on the underside of my left forearm on Wednesday and at first it was okay. I noticed more pain and redness than usual on the 2nd day and then Friday when I went home I realized that it hurt badly when I lowered my forearm below my waist and my entire forearm had become very swollen! I did go to the emergency room that night and they said it's either an infection or a reaction to the ink in the tattoo. It hasn't gotten better and I am just praying it does soon, but I am going back to the doctor Monday. If yours persists you should definitely go see your primary doctor....I hope it improves!

I am so happy to see that I am not the only one with these issues. I got my third tattoo on my calf and I never expected this process to suck so much. The day after I got it I could barely walk, then today I looked at my ankle and realized I don't have one. I was pretty sure I was going to die. Glad to know this is normal and where not to get a tattoo at ever again!

May be able to answer this one. The swelling is normal due to the disturbance of the localised tissue. The body tries to rectify the "invasion" by creating an increased amount of fluid to combat any possibility of infection, etc. This is qiute normal. Just think of it like getting a blister on oyur heel after getting some new shoes. Elevating the limb should aid in the recovery. If you do notice any redness tracking up or down the limb from the tat particularly along veins, definitly got to the doctor, but otherwise all is normal.

Tatts below the knee are the most likely to swell after you have them done. Most artists advise you to not wear shoes the first two weeks, stay out of the sun, and prevent friction to the tatt. These tatts won't totally heal for 3 months, as the cellular replacement takes that long to recover the inked areas. Ice should be used 20 mns on/off, bacitracin cream can be used, if you have pus or blistering or excessive warmth and swelling, go to an ER FOR ANTIBIOTICS AND A SHOT OF ANTI INFLAMMATORY MEDICINE. stay off that foot and elevate it whenever you can. Plan your tatts for when you have enough time not to wear shoes loose slippers work. You don't want to be standing on em all day. That's the worst thing you can do for your recovery. Legs frequently have poorer circulation, which doesn't help the problem, at all. Don't use anything but bacitracin ointment if listened, and an unscented lotion if not.

I forgot to add that you want to use an unfragranced lotion where the first two ingredients on the panel are water and glycerin . You can buy glycerin and rose water in the drugstore and put that on to moisturizer your tatt. Just a bit, rub in gently. Don't use cloth towels to dry, they have dirt and lint. Only use paper towels. Moisturizer your tat every 1-2 hours as you can the first two weeks, and don't pick, peel or itch. Use bactine spray to relieve pain and help prevent infection. Question? If its oozing pus, go to ER or stat care for antibiotics. Ifs it's not oozing, you can email me. Take care of your tat, no sunlight, no picking, peeling, etc, and you won't lose ink. Cruel is a good moisturizer but they make different kinds read the labels.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. Had my second tattoo done day before yesterday on the outside of my leg above my ankle. Noticed some redness and swelling around the ankle joint this morning and its a little warm. From reading all the posts here it seems like this is pretty normal so I'm really relieved!! Might take a couple of anti-inflammatories just to help it along.

Fluids are pooling on your foot, hence the swelling. Try elevating the affected foot above your heart. Gravity will push back the fluids back to your system.

Hi there:

I beleive swelling is part of the healling process. I just got a tatoo in my lover abdomen ( ouch) and that was yesterday, and today is pretty swollen. My pouch doubled in size. Totally normal.
Just elevate, and rest your leg. Remember a tatto is an invasion to the tissues. A great invasion, still the body reads it that way and it has to work really hard to repair.
Hope this helps a bit.

so happy to have stumbled across this thread....I had my lower leg/ankle/top of foot done on Saturday night...(my 7th tattoo) Sunday I was fine all day...Monday afternoon after sitting at my desk all day my foot was so swollen I could hardly walk...this has never happened to me before...I seriously thought I was going to die...the tattoo itself looks amazing...so I was not worried about an infection...just a little worried as to why my foot keeps swelling...we are now at Wednesday night and I am still swollen...(goes away throughout the night) like everyone else ice does not seem to help and taking ibuprofen every 4 hours...I love my tattoo and would do it over again in a heartbeat swelling and all but would really like for it to go away soon...I was crying to my husband Monday night saying I will never do this again...but he doesnt believe me....

I have done tattoos around the ankle and had clients feet swell up, even though tattoo is not on foot. Although strange it seems common, just watch the swelling should only last a couple days.

I do all my tats my self and my wifes, as well as friends and family. hoping to go pro by which i mean shell out loads of money to the government. Out of curiosity, if u are having such bad times, Emergency rooms, doctors, etc, why the hell would you go back for more?
I know that every scratcher has their own opinion but i swear by hot baths, and nipple cream for breastfeeding mums. prevents scabbing, keeps moisture in as required for healing, promotes healing and is neutral so not to damage the tattoo. coat the artwork in it as many times as you can until healed. Swelling bruising and so on are all symptoms of well, baby booby problems goes to serve why so effective.
Helps healing quicker too, so u can get back on and ink up some more.
hope tht helps.

there is something that you can get at the store its called polysporin.. not neosporin but POLYsporin.. it is a topical antibiotic that does NOT strip the ink and yes it is definately and infection... i have one on the outside of my calf and it started swelling and getting down to my ankle... went straight to the doc and im waiting on the antibiotics... i know it will burn but to clean it up if it is goopy is a little rubbing alcohol to clean it then wash it with antibacterial soap I.E. dial hand soap. then make a paste out of epson salt and water and put it on the swelling NOT THE TATTOO ITSELF. cus it will burn like a mo fo.... hope this helps but yeah it wont get better if you dont go get antibiotics..... if left untreated it can make you go into shock.... but if ur tattoo is healed and all you have is swelling then use a paste of epson salt and water and smear it on our swelling then wrap it with paper towels or hand towel for like 30 or 45 minutes.
