Most/Least Pain spots to get a tattoo

Of the normal extremities :) which are the most and least painful areas to get a tattoo? Excluding the franks & beans, lips and things like that.. like thighs, arms, calves, armpit/side area, back, chest, etc.. how do the areas rate?

I don't know how anyone else feels, but the most painful in my mind (so far) is the one that I got on my hip/pelvic area. That's the only one that made me cry. And I have a huge tolerance for pain. But after reading this forum for a while, I'm beginning to think that the dude who did it didn't really know what he was doing and was trying to tattoo an ovary as well as the skin. If you were to look at that tat closely, you can tell that it's in there real deep. My other ones haven't hurt for shit, by comparison. :o)

The most painful spots I've experienced was behind the knee and along the acilles tendon... I could feel the virbrations in my fingers for both, felt like an electrical shock on top of the normal irritation of the needle.

Ok, I got 60 tattoos, so far the worst was, all the way inside of my belly button, and my sternum, the tattoo starts at my bikini line, (very low bikini line, and goes above my sternum). It's not quite done yet, but no matter how much it hurts, it's so worth it, I have a great artist, also a good friend doing.

The funniest thing that happened to me was when we were working on my shoulder. I started laughing because it tickled so damn bad. Taz just look at me like I had lost my mind. Although i wasn't laughing so much when we started working on the upper-inside of my bicep. Holy shit! That had my feet and palms raining with sweat!

When I got my back done, it was done in one sitting, (from noon till 10:30) I was quite concerned abou thow it would feel going up the spine.. it was fine, didnt really bug me too much at all.... When he got to the part that went over my kidney area... that hurt like a bitch!

I have about 14 tats, and of all ov em, that was really the only spot that i found hurt

But hey, everyone is different!!!

I have a sleeve on my right arm and i don't think that a single inch of skin hurt on my arm when I was getting tattooed, so if you want to get a tattoo thats probably your best bet for almost no pain. I also have my entire right side rib cage tattooed, and that fricken hurt! Probably the worst pain I've ever been in so I'm guessing arm is the best place. Plus, it looks kick ass! Get a sleeve. Also, having a good artist is key because that can make or break every outcome of the tattoo~

Well, as far as "normal" spots go, I would say near the armpit, on the side. Spine hurt pretty much too. On the not bad in the pain department, inside of the forearm (though near the elbow crease and wrist get a bit tender), outside of the ankle, and the lower back (I fell asleep).

However, the most painful place for me would be the hairline, both on the back of my neck and around my ear. That and my tragus. Apparently the tragus hurts like bitch to both piercing and tattooing. Behind the ear, in that little crease also hurts alot and is a bitch to heal.

All that being said (and the rest of the post), don't let pain be your deciding factor. If you want a certain tattoo in a certain spot, go for it. The pain is momentary, the tattoo forever. Don't settle.

my lower back had to be the worst, not on the spine but the closer he got to the sides the worse it got, think it had more to do with the vibration tho! and tattooing myslef hurts more than anything.. i so gotta stop that shit !

i am getting a large rib piece over the course of the next month, i hear that is a pretty rough area.

i got a necklace around my neck, it really didn't hurt at all. the most pain was around the sternum and collar bone area, but that wasn't much worse than rubbing a bad sunburn.

Not bad for me= Both arms fully sleeved (very pain free), both calves (again, very easy).

Bad for me= Chest. It hurt like hell. Full chest piece lower neck to above ab musles, arm pit to arm pit. I figured nothing else (tattoo related) could be nearly as painful. It sucked, but was tolerable.

Worst are ever= I was definitely wrong in my assumptions about my chest. I got both sides of my ribs tattooed in one sitting (pretty large pieces). I have a pretty decent pain tolerance, but I'll tell you - as awesome as it looks - I doubt I'd ever do it again. It was seriously the most pain I've ever experienced. I hated it. Absolutely hated it. Sure, looks sweet, but it hurt.

yeah, so i am halfway done with my rib piece and the first session went pretty well. like the above post sd, it is a really painful area. the hip bone was by far the worst, it felt like daggers gauging right into the bone. the ribs weren't as bad as i was expecting, but not a walk in the park. i have another session on friday to finish it all up.

overall, a super cool place for a tat, but know what you are getting into. you can handle it, but is definitely not like getting something on your arm.

there seems to be so much variation. i cant really compare cause i only have one. my wife got on on the back of her neck before i got mine and she said it didnt hurt at all. then a few weeks later i got one between my shoulder blades and it felt like someone was taking a red hot piece of coat hanger and gouging it into my skin. it hurt worse then i thought it would. then he took a break and started shading.... that was a whole new definition of pain.

I would have to say my worst so far was the ditch inside my elbow or the crease where my arm pit meets with my shoulder. Ouch, was mentioned a time or two. However, for me around my ankle and the outside part of my elbow were both abosolutly pain free. I was very plesantly surprised for both. Oh, and just one spot on the tops of both my hands sent a weird shock to my entire body. Not really painful but odd none the less.

About 2 weeks ago I got lettering on the top of both of my feet. these were my second tattoos, my first one being a word on my wrist which didn't hurt at all. I had heard that the top of your feet was one of the most painful spots, its true. It felt like someone was scraping the skin off my feet and I fainted as he was finishing the last letter. Now I am getting my upper rib cage near my armpit and breast done tomorrow, I don't know why i keep picking the most painful areas but the pain is worth it.

I have 5 tattoos. They all hurt! but were all worth it! The one on my forearm i would say hurt the least. untill they went over an old surgery scar. The foot was the second worst it had me in tears.

But the worst of all i would HAVE to say were my eyelids! i got that permanent eyeliner shyt... WOW!! i dont recommend it!! The worst 2 hours of my life! you lay down for 2 hours with your eyes closed, while someone dig a needle in to your eye, then rubs it (not so gently) with soapy water!! and then the swelling!!! get ready for a week of looking like a bloated frog! ha ha! NOT FUN! I love it now that tho!

The least painful for me would have to be arms..inner or outer, upper or lower. Even after a long session, it doesn't hurt all that much for me.

Ribs on the other hand..kills haha. I remember getting a 5 hr session done on my ribs, and because my body went into so much stress, i had a fever for a few hours.

I have a dragon that starts on my collar bone, bruised pretty bad, goes across my right pec and down my sternum across my abs, over my left ribcage and ends on my lower back. One arm goes directly underneath my left nipple and into my arm pit. The whole friggin thing hurt like hell. My artist sucked and went way to deep making it hurt worse. It looks pretty bad to boot. So know that I have found a competent artist who has already done some work on me I have to sit and get the whole damn thing done over. I can assure you I am not looking forward to that. But I am sure it will come out much better this time.

Posted by Ybloc from IP: 80.219.229.25 on 10/02/07

I had almost exactly the same experience as 'Baker', but I was probably more of a sissy about it. i got 80% of my back piece done in two consecutive (I know...STUPID idea) days. the outline burned, but even over the kidney area it was tollerable. the first day was dedicated to shading my upper back and wasn't any more uncomfortable than most places for the most part. the SECOND day...woah! it blew my mind totally. I felt like such a whimp. I've done so many tattoos on other people in that same spot. I braced myself on my stool and frantically counted from 1 to 100 and back again, then I tried to visualize every number as I counted it...then, when all that did nothing to distract me I started visualizing the numbers and then visualizing blowing them up, setting them afire, steam rolling them, etc...when that didn't work (and it didn't work at all) i gave up and sat still with my back to my tattooist, secretly (I wish) letting tears stream down my cheeks. I wasn't actually crying, it felt more like someone was squeezing lemon juice into my eyes!
The funny thing is that even the work that wrapped around my back and onto my ribs was just...normal. It just stung a bit.
I have a really variable pain tollerance. Arms (in and out), elbows, sholders, bosom, stomach, and most of my legs didn't phaze me. I almost fainted when i got a small work on my palm. because I have experienced the pain of my customers when working on crotch&inner thigh areas, behind the knee, on the upper ribs going to the armpit, under the ankles and in the arches of feet, I have decided to wait until I am 80 (I'm sure I won't really hold out that long) to tattoo those places. I am a little bit hypocritical in that sense. I always encourage my customers to get the tattoo where it feels right and works best and not where it hurts least.
I actually think pain sensations are more that 50% psycological. If you are worn out, hung over, banging your head over upcoming exams/taxes, or just anticipating how much your tattoo will hurt...or worse, worried about seeming tough and (wo)manly while you are getting you will probably experience more pain. if you start your very first tattoo with the comment "wow! that thing sounds just like a dentists drill!" it will probably hurt more too. When I got my back piece I was excited, didn't sleep well, and I got into the downward spiral listening to the stop-start-stop of the machine, trying to anticipate exactly when the needle would make contact with my skin. Obviously all the worng things to do.
Do some stretching before your appointment. Drink some nice warming tea like Bengal Spice. Set aside enough time to get to your tattooist without stressing. Don't smoke pot or down a couple of shots and listen to Gwar played backward on double speed on the car sound system while trying to brake and accellerate through morning rush hour traffic on your way to the shop and you will probably sleep right through the tattoo.

okay, so i have 8 tattoos... my ankles, my whole lower leg, my neck, little guys right under the ditch of my arms, and i have some pheonix's on my shoulders. i've been pretty tolerant to the pain of all of em... nothing bothered me much at all- except my shoulders! oh, dear.... i was cool until the second hour passed and when it was right on my bones i spent a lot of time cursing out my poor artist.... it was hell for me (but worth it... it's really beautiful!)

so, tomorrow i get this diner tattoo on the inner part of my bicep- about 7" long- almost to my armpit. and, i am starting to make myself nervous all of the sudden... nervous enough to look up this site and this discussion board and post this, anyway... i have a moderate tolerance of pain and i'm guessing about 3 hours of work.... and, ahhh... i don't want to be a pain in the ass to work on and i don't want to walk in with this fear.... it will ruin the experience and getting tattooed is something i love to do....

anyone have anything to say about this spot?

think i'll make it through! ?? haha....

my first tat was on my hip bone and it honestly felt as if someone were scraping my skin off with a knife. as bad as that sounds, it wasnt enough to keep me from laughing and joking and carrying on a conversation, nor did it make me cry. i think the level of pain is different for everyone. bottom line, if you really want a tattoo, don't let the pain of the placement stop you from getting one. pain is only temporary.

I really want a small outline of a star and i am thinking about it on one of my fingers.

im really worried about it because i have an extreme phobia of needles AND i have a low tolerance for pain.

a few years ago, i pierced my cartilage with an earring. can anyone tell me how it might feel in comparison to that?

or maybe give me the pain of a tattoo on your finger on a scale of 1-10?

anything that will make me feel at least a little better.

I've never seen a knuckle tattoo stay sharp on that part of the body.
If you are considering about pain, don't get tattoo. Tattoos hurt some less some more. A hena tattoo may be more appropriate for those fearing needles and pain.

Accordong to my tattoo artist the hands are not a good place to get a tattoo because they fade the quickest due to the constant motion. For those of you out there concerned with how much it hurts, your best bet is to know what you want and go for it it was mentioned earlier pain is temporary the ink is forever. My side was the most painful, but it looks flippin sweet.

I have 33 hours in the chair, on 4 tattoos.

My first one was on my 18th, a 3hr blaster on my inner bicep. That sucked. Like someone else said-my hands were dripping buckets.

Second was my ribs, from hip to arm pit. That REALLY sucked. One 2hr and three 3hr sessions on that piece.

Next i had got a Cadillac emblem(about 5" diameter) right under my "belly button". The outline took 2hrs and i honestly hardly felt it(which i hate saying, cause i never believe people when they say that, but it's true). But i was dumb and went back for color 6 days later. HURT LIKE HELL!

The piece i'm working on now is my chest. I have 16 hours into it and every session sucks so bad. Last time i went in we worked on the script on my collar bones-all i can say is WOW. Chest definately sucks.

Pretty much, tattoos suck and i hate them. But theres nothing like it and i love em all so much and plan on havin over 100 hours in before i'm 40 for sure(i'm 20).

Oh, and to me, getting tattooed feels like getting scraped with a red hot coat hanger, for hours. And as much as i hate it, damn they look good!

best rule of thumb... your arms are "freebies" along with your lower legs minus the shins, achilles, behind the knee, inside of the elbow. But then again any area that is a major joint hurts like hell especially during the healing process.

Surprisingly i did a tattoo on the webbing in between my index and middle finger on myself and it did not hurt... but then i did it on 2 friends last week and both had the most priceless look on their faces. the only benefit is they have to be small so they take about 10 min.

The inside of the lip did not hurt, but unfortunately fell out for me as a lot do.

The torso is bad ribs and chest are excrutiating, as well as below the belly button. unfortunately i'm running out of a lot of prime real estate on my body so my next one is either going on my armpit or my neck, neither are pleasant from what my clients have told me but the pain is half the pride in having a tattoo.

I have a lot of tattoos on diff parts of my body and as far as I know that here it is not well accepted yet... and worse I am a girl..... I have a high threshold for pain but the most painful tattoo I have is on my right hand especially at the knuckle area and at the side of my fingers. I could feel that my bone is having a tattoo as well. You could feel your bones vibrating and your hand is like twitching and all and I tried my best not to show that I am at pain. The worst is the healing stage because my hand is really swollen, hot and red and that is the first time I drank pain killer after a tattoo and of course taking a bath. My work involves computer and that means I am using a mouse. Imagine your hand is so swollen and you are going to work everyday. I almost thought that my tattoo got infected because there is like liquid coming out from my tattoo. But I was happy that it healed very well. So think twice if you want to have a tattoo on your hand………

I'm scheduled to get my first tattoo sometime tomorrow... Yay?
It's a birthday present to myself [I'm 18] and from what I've been reading, the chest area's a bitch... It's kind of making me nervous but I'm going for it anyways... I'll let you know how that goes...

I've got 4 tattoos, working on #5.
Least painful tattoo was on my shoulder (at the top of my left arm). That was a cake walk compared to the one I got down my left side. It goes right from my hip to under my bra line, and WOW. It hurt on the boney parts, the fatty parts and everything in between. But, its my favourite one as of yet, so it was well worth it.
The artist that did that tattoo said he had a grown man cry getting one in that spot, so beware if thats where you're planning your next one!

I just got my first tattoo yesterday. It was an eagle with wings centered on my spine in the middle of my upper back b/w the shoulder blades. the parts of the wings on my shoulder bones hurt bad and the part on the spine hurt bad for me. The rest was fine. Shading wasn't fun...To me it felt like someone carving in my back with a knife but i knew it was a tattoo so that mentally helped me. It wasn't ever enough to make me want to tear up, but during the bad parts i just had to close my eyes and think of a happy place. I highly suggest you get your tattoo artist to numb up your body part if you are scared of pain. My tattoo took 1.5 hours and for the last 25 minutes he numbed up my back and i couldn't feel a thing. It was amazing.

yeah I just went in and got a very large tattoo on my upper chest sorta above my boobs with the tail and my brothers initials going between my boobs. this eagle took about 2 hours for the outline and in about 2 weeks i go in for the fillins and shading. I chose a very very good tattoo artist. put it this way she has been doing this so long she did my dads tattoo about 20 years ago.i went in not scared at all as I love needles, and I couldn't figure out why she was trying to scare me by telling me how much it was gonna hurt in that place. it turns out that being scared helped because I was more prepaired for the coming pain (which by the way was ok until they reached the fatless area between my boobs). all in all though I find that no matter how much it hurt and I sweat (no cry just lots of sweat) I will most definetly be getting more and I will most definetly be using the same artist that I did. and for any of you reading this from alaska go to anchorage tattoo studio. ask for judy if you like thin lines and larry alan if you like em thick.

hey all, getting my first tattoo this week, and am incredibly concerned about the pain! it will be relatively small, litterally a treble clef above my ankle (im a dancer so its to represent that), but will probably be no bigger than 2 cm? will this hurt or will i be pretty much okay?

i have plans for a Dali elephant on the top of my foot, but cant bring myself to the pain yet :)

I got one on my pelvic area and I have to agree that is one of the most painful spots to get one. I didn't realize how tender and not "fleshy" the skin is there. I have one on the back of my neck and that didn't hurt at all. The only place I even noticed them was right on the spine. I would stick to a fleshy part. But half of the battle is... when you want one so bad I guess you don't notice the pain. Good Luck!

I have 4 tattoos. I would have to say the LEAST painful tat for me was the back of my neck. the only 'uncomfortable' area is when they go over your spine. but otherwise it was good. honestly.. if your gonna get tattooed.. you need to be good at Mind OVER Matter. it helps a bunch. the MOST painful tat for me was a tie between my wrist and my hip. oh dear lord.. i think the hip was actually worse. it felt like the guy was carving my hip with a red hot razor!! eeh. but hey!! if you want a tat there. go for it! mind over matter !! remember that.. my other tat was on my shoulder blade. wasn't the funnest 1ST tat. but its not bad. :] hope this helps. i'm also thinking of getting a tat on my ribcage.. which i'm SURE hurts like a mofo. but we'll see if i get the balls to do it. hahahah.

V egas Baby!!!

Well Let me throw in my 2 cents.. I have a few tattoos in the spots that people say hurt the Most and least.. Well the one on my neck, No biggie, same for the Big Wheel on the Inside of my arm.. now I will say that The one on my Chest hurt like a motherfucker.. 5 hours on the Chestplate Sucks!!! but I did it.. Handled it like a Champ.. Now lets talk Ribs.. I will say now Holy Fuck!!!! Well I just got home from having my side beat up on for 6.5 hours and will say that the Outline was cool, And I thought I was on Like Donkey Kong.. Was I wrong.. Shading!!! Lets just say.. I feel as though I got my ass kicked by 4 UFC Champs and then Drank a 12 pack!!! Without drinking the 12 pack.. It sucked to say the least.. it was very tolerable but when hour 5 hit, it was all downhill from there.. One person can only take so many needles drilling into the same ribs over and over. But Angie My artist said I had bigger balls than most everyone who she done rib pieces on.. most people would have broken it up in a few sessions, but I was like Fuck it.. Its going to Suck either way so just do it.. the tattoo runs from under my armpit to my hip.. and there are a ton of spots that suck on that route but the Ribs Hands down are the Worst I've Experienced...

Bony part of the elbow was the worst I've felt. Upper arms and forearms felt great, calves felt great. Between the shoulder blades was neutral. Bony part of the wrist had a few electric jolts. But the bony part of the elbow was almost constant stabbing, shocking pain. But it only took a few minutes, it's over now, and I've got the tattoo forever.

I have two tattoos and I will be getting another one this coming up Saturday. But I can't chose to either have it on my left upperside were my ribs are or on my middle leftside of my back (by my ribs). The first one I got was when I was 18 and I got it in the middle of my lower back. That one hurt like hell!! Espically when she was coloring it! But it was worth the pain. The second one I got was about a year ago on my right shoulder blade. That was a breeze, it was more relaxing than anything except for when they did the last star it started to hurt a little. I'm thinking that my back is just a blank slate and It needs to be decorated.

I have three tattoos [between my shoulder blades, my hip, and my ribs]. They were uncomfortable, yeah, but totally bearable. The one on my ribs [a huge koi with a ton of color] only really started to be sore when the artist was putting the last bit of color on. By that time, I had already been in the chair for over two hours, so my skin was pretty raw. I wouldn't say it was painful though. The one on my hip made me giggle, so the artist had to stop a couple times and my back just felt like sunburn after the fact (I actually almost fell asleep in the chair while he was doing it). Hope this helped a little!

I'm 16 and getting my first tattoo done in a few weeks hopefully. It's a design I've done myself and had my heart set on for years so I know once I have it done I won't regret it. Only trouble is, I can't decide whether to get it done at the top of my foot, the back of my neck, or any other suggestions?
I'm prepared for the pain, no pain no gain right, but how would you describe the pain?
I've heard that it's like rubbing vigorously at really bad sun burn, but more than anything it's like a sickening aching feeling. But then, I've also heard from other friends of mine that it is "enjoyable pain" and is quite relaxing and tickles.

I know I'm young and by having it done, breaking UK laws but I'm prepared for any amount of pain I'd just like this bit more information, just mainly out of curiosity, as I am fascinating by tattoo's.

I'm also thinking of having a small, simple musical note behind my ear, onto the neck slightly. Is this a bad idea? And as this will be smaller than my first tattoo, should I get this done first instead?

Any help is appeciated :)

Thats a horrible idea. An illegal tattoo is a dangerous tattoo, and you're putting yourself at risk for HIV, Hepatitis, and a number of nasty infections. Be smart, and respect your body. Wait.

Otherwise, i can tell you this: It definately isn't a "pleasant pain," and it does not tickle.

Actually, not really. In a shop that follows all laws and guidelins, its pretty much imposible to contract a bloodborne illness. There is not a single documented case of transmission of HIV from a tattoo as it becomes inviable almost instantly when it leaves the body. Hepatitis is more resiliant, but with proper sterilization and cross contamination techniques, the risk of contacting it in a CLEAN tattoo shop is almost zero.

I stress the word "clean," because i acknowledge that its is possible to contract something in a professional shop, but if you educate yourself, ask questions, and watch to make sure an artist works clean, then you'll be just fine. At our shop we've even given people tours of our bio-room, and walkthroughs of how we set up, clean up, and sterilize our equiptment.

As an artist, I know that i MUST protect myself, and obsessively do so, and in turn protect my current and future customers.

Think about this: It is illegal to tattoo outside of a shop in all 50 states (i'm not sure about the laws in all other countries, but i know most are strict). If an artist disregards that law, how can you be sure they aren't disregarding laws that set guidelines for proper sterilization and cleaning?

I can't count how many people have come into the shop with crap they got in someone's kitchen. The first thing that comes out of their mouth when they show me the tattoo is usually "I know it's bad, i don't know why i did that." and then "how much to fix it?"

bottom line is this: Compared to a legal tattoo in a professional shop, a home tattoo is EXTREMELY dangerous, will look worse, and won't last as long.

I have researched various tattoo shops in my local area and have been with several of my friends when they have had tattoo's done. My dad's friend is a professional tattoo artist and has agreed to do my tattoo for me once I am 100% on everything. He owns clean a shop and sterilysed equipment so I'm pretty confident I'll be fine.

I've decided to get it done on my neck so anyone with neck tattoo's have any tips on how to look after it once I've had it done. Thanks.

Glad I didn't go for the neck one now though as a first tattoo, although I didn't find my wrist in the slightest bit painful, it was actually enjoyable I found (wierd?).

Thanks for everyones advice though, I've got the tattoo bug now though and have already booked myself in for another tattoo in January!

I'm considering getting a tattoo (vereh small) on my hip.
But not on the side, near the front.
Sorta low.

Point is, most of the posts about hip tattoos say you guys were laughing cuz it tickled? Err.. lol I'm guessing it won't be too painful then?
Has anyone had a bad experience getting one there?
Or are they just sorta prickly?

I want a full back tattoo,
On the upper right side down my back, I want this picture of John Lennon, he has his hand on his head with a cigarette. I want the smoke coming from the cigarette to softly say "Legend" in it.

On the left side and going down my lower back, I want the lyrics to his song "Imagine."

Now, I'm only 16, and I don't plan on getting this tattoo until I'm 18.
How bad is this tattoo going to hurt, if anyone could estimate? Especially on John Lennon's face, because there's a lot of detail in it. I don't have a high pain tolerance either, And this is also to be my first tattoo.

But I have wanted this tattoo for such a long time, infact I am always picturing it in my head and I'm so excited for it! John Lennon is also a huge inspiration to me. One of my biggest idols, and my favorite musician (along with The Beatles of course) since I was younger than I can remember. I know the pain will be worth it, but I need a little insight to what I'm getting myself into.

Thanks!
-Lauren

Not gonna lie, my first tattoo so far, I'm getting an all black fill in on my cage that is 10 inches long by 4 inches. Its partly done, 5 hours it took for the outline plus 2 letters are filled in, It's an ambigram saying Rovelli and flipped is Italian. My d-day will be in a week or so, Its not that its painful, its more of an annoyance if anything.

It hurts everywhere as far as I can tell, but some places do hurt worse than others.

My first was on my right delt, probably one of the easiest places to get one. I personally have an enormous tolerance for pain, but I'll admit that I was very surpised as how much that first tattoo hurt. It was completely bearable and I didn't bat an eye or even wince, but the amount of pain was quite surprising.

I just had my most recent done on Friday, three days ago. This one is on my lower right side abs, from the belt-line to my ribs. HOLY CHRISTWAGONS... Probably the most pain I've ever experienced. The side is painful, the ribs are INCREDIBLY painful, and the stomach is a pain because the moisture in the tissue makes it difficult to take ink - which can require 4-5 passes when shading some areas.

The hardest part was trying to defeat the body's natural reflexes and keep the area relaxed. I'm an avid martial artist and I spent most of the time going through forms in my head and focusing on breathing techniques. This helped a great deal but the pain was still quite agonizing. I didn't move or flinch, but I'm quite sure I made some very humorous facial expressions.

As horrible as the experience was, I'm absolutely in love with the tattoo. It's something I'll cherish forever. And while right now I feel like I'll never want a tattoo needle to touch any area of my body ever again, I know that in another year I'll have forgotten all about the pain and probably want another. That's the way it usually happens :)

What I haven't seen mentioned here so far is how absolutely wonderful that feeling is when you finally step out of the chair after a couple of hours knowing your tattoo is done. Fantastic...

-Lance

It all HURTS. Tattoos are made of ink, in your skin, put there by a needle that puts holes in your skin 20 times a second. Thosands of tiny holes that make you bleed and also create PAIN. If youre worried about the pain, then go draw pretty pictures on your skin with an ink pen. That being said, the hinge of the arm opposite the elbow or around the fingers were tender. Head is tender in spots, around the ears and at the top - but if youre getting ink on your noggin you dont give a shit. It feels like someone is screwing your skull with your ol ladys vibrator.

I got a tattoo on my lower back, dead center of my spine *typical "tramp stamp"*, despite what all my friends said, this didn't hurt one bit. It just felt like a hot needle being rubbed over my skin. It was just a simple something, no color. I'm getting another one on the back of my leg in a few days.. I'm hopeing this doesn't hurt much, but they're using color.. so who knows.. I'll let you guys know once I've gotten it done.. so so far I guess I can't really say one stop over the other, since my 1st didn't hurt one bit.. hm..

Answer to Cam: Dude, I just got my 6th tattoo last night. I decided to experience the inner bicep this time!! I actually fell on this page wanted to know if the swelling in that part was common!! I actually learned that is it normal to have more swelling in that part, so I'm reassured!! For sure that place hurts more than the exterior of the arm, because the skin there is like chicken skin like my girlfriend would say lol...Anyways, while it was being done I just closed my eyes and slowed down my respiration, keeping chatting a bit also helped!! Even though it's a little swole today and hurts when I move my arm, like everyone said, the pain is temporary and the tattoo permanent!! The main thing is that it looks kickass when I look in the mirror!! Have fun dude, good luck!!

I have a tattoo taking up the whole top of my foot, as well as the surrounding inner ankle area on both legs, and although I had heard it hurt a lot, it didn't bother me one bit. I found my foot to be almost no pain, it tickled if anything, and just felt kind of unusual.

Now, getting to my point, I'm starting my back piece on tuesday, and I'm not nervous, because I love the feeling of getting tattooed, but this is obviously a very different spot, regardless of my high pain tolerance.

So, does anyone have any comparisons/thoughts on the feeling i should expect, if any?

i have a full sleeve and a colar, but when i got my entire chest blasted, as soon as the tattoo artist got to my sternum and lower sternum.. i was moaning.... sweating... basically wanted to stop the session. it was sooo sooo sooo painful. it was something i will never want to go through again, the thing took 8 hours... my advice is have the tattoo artist start on the most painfull areas, do to the fact that you still have alot of endorfins.. endorfins will run out overtime that is why tattoos vary in pain scale.. the more frequent you get tattoos the less endorfins you have. so i suggest you wait a couple months before starting another big piece.

There is a tattoo shop in northern Michigan that will let you pick any piece of flash off the wall and give you the tattoo for free. That's if you let them complete a tattoo of a penis wit wings on it on the bottom of your foot. Supposedly that is the worst place of all. A friend of mine has two lines on the bottom of his foot, he couldn't go through wih the rest.

i would have to say that the pain depends on what you are gettin done.....

if it its something simple like Script it really doesnt matter where you get it as long as the Artist doesnt have a "Heavy" hand...the pain shouldnt be too bad

as for something more detailed after about 7 hours any tattoo gets to be a little rough

my ribs didnt hurt to much (but i only got some Script) neither did my shoulder blades....

my most painful wasnt because of the location but because of the time it took to complete

I'm considering getting a circular tattoo directly in the center of my chest. I am currently working on breathing exercises during my meditation classes to control my bodily sensations. One of the most severe sensations is of course pain which can be menacing to some people. Another wise decision to enhance the human anatomy tolerance is acupuncture. Majority of people find this to be abnormal and wont find it necessary to join sessions. During a prolong amount of time spent (1-2 years) your endorphins (what causes pain) will be stimulated and somewhat modified to recognize what pain is when in contact with a needle and therefore will ignore the painful sensations. Either Meditation or Acupuncture will reduce anxiety and replace it with great credibility and tolerance to the human anatomy.

I'm 17, going on 18 in July. I was going to get a tattoo for my birthday by my mom is letting me get it next weekend.

I'm getting the word FAITH and the T is going to be a cross made of two nails. I have no idea where to put it because everyone is freaking me out with this whole "least painful, worst painful" crap. Pretty much it hurts anywhere you get it? My three places of choice are: hip, foot, & "tramp stamp". Which is least painful? I don't get on this site much. I just googled it. So email me with a response or look me up on Facebook or MySpace.

I just got my first tattoo on my back, right below and slightly on my shoulder blade. I'd say, for being so young, (just turned 17), it's not that painful at all. I've gone through piercings and shit, and what I've noticed is after the initial pain, you wake up the next day forgetting it was ever there. Definitely the biggest part of the pain is hearing the constant buzz of the gun, machine, whatever you want to call it. There were parts where it hurt to the point that I was gripping the chair and holding my breath (Bad idea. Breath when you get tattoos. BREATH. And don't tense. Part of my tattoo is all the way into the damn muscle because I tensed for the first half.) There were parts where I relaxed and laughed and chatted with the people around me. I got mine done under the table, so you'd think it would be shitty and painful, but it wasn't, so I can only imagine going into a shop would be SO much better. Tat looks good, greatly satisfied, getting a touch up as soon as it heals. =)

Hi everyone.. This is my first post. LOL. Hope it works :p

anyways, I only have my lower back and foot done. I threw up when i had my first tatt done (lower back), most of that was pretty good except toward the sides.. Not over any bone, but right out toward the sides of my back.. That made me sick LOL.. Then my foot was pretty good too (except my entire leg shook for the whole session) The most painful part of that was toward the outer edge also.

Next up.. Ribcage or Back of my neck..

I have stopped reading everyones painful experience on rib cages.. it will only put me off :P

peace

Surprised nobody mentioned the wrist.

I did 5 tattoos in one sit in a couple of weeks ago on my lower arm.

Never to on one arm, be broken on the other(from hatebreed's song defeatist),
1 medium/large sized star on each hand under the caligraphy lettering,
and my sons name smack dab on the wrist under the star on the left hand. pretty much a 1/4th half sleeve.

Lettering: Fine! didn't break a sweat.
Stars: The lower part made me grind my teeth just a tad,
but the lettering with my sons name got my fucking attention.

Seeing and feeling the single needle doing fine lines and battering all the (tendons/ligaments or whatever the hell it's called in English) and nerves so that my fingers started to move and twitch. That sucked!

And what sucks even more is that the healing was so tricky and alot of ink fell out, I'll have to redo the thing yet again. hahaha :-p
But, the endorfins kick in..And as i said to the artist. is it wrong to think this feels kinda relaxing and pleasant? felt like someone scratching my arm when it itched like crazy. better than sex!!!

During the healing though...It did itch like crazy and i couldn't scratch it for anything..great!

But as the tattoo artist said: "Sooo, you wanna get your wrists tattooed?" he said chuckling with a hint of a sadistic grin. "You know that is going to hurt like shit right?" still laughing. But hey..No pain no gain!, He agreed. (still, haven't seen many sleeves going that far down) gee..wonder why.

I'm thinking now as i thought then, that if i'm going to be a smart ass and get double sleeves (and i do wan't the elbows) included!. that's the least of my worries as we'll have to cover almost that entire area with more ink. still, not as far down as the lettering.

Looking forward to round two next summer.

I've had two so far. One on the bottom of my neck/top of my back area which didn't hurt at all despite all my friends saying it would!!

My second is an ankle bracelt which did hurt - a lot!! It goes all the way around my ankle twice and then onto my foot. I think I expected it not to hurt which made it seem more painful somehow! Planning a rib piece atm. Have heard from some people that it hurts but I really want it so I'll get through it!! My ankle tattoo hurt but I love it and would do it again in a heartbeat. People who stress themselves out about the pain should think twice about wether or not they really want the tattoo!!

I'm set on getting it, and I know quite a "few" people tattoos, so it's not anything new to me, I know it'll hurt like nothing else, but any hints or warnings before I get it?

I just got my first tattoo, and for some reason I decided to stick that sucker on my side, over my ribcage. It goes from my hip to a few inches below my armpit, and O-U-C-H. It took about 3 hours, and by the end I was close to passing out (my limbs went numb, my vision whited out... oh boy). I heard a few people mention the hips hurt... well after the ribs, I was thrilled when the tattoo artist started going over the hips. THRILLED.

All I can say is, I love my new tattoo, but thank God you only have to go through that pain once. And I assure you, I am never, EVER getting this thing touched up. It can fade to high heaven if it wants to. Just stay away from my ribs, please ;)

i've just started a full sleeve in Japanese style on my left arm . started with my forearm. no real issues except.....inside of elbow, and inside of wrist. got these bits done last after 5hours and hurt like hell. best advice...its gonna hurt whatever you get, but as soon as the the needle stops the pain goes away. I've also got tribal on my right arm, and the inside of the bicep just pinches. Got 3 more sessions to complete my arm, not looking forward to outside of elbow. also heard that the older you get, the worse the pain?....anyone know if this is true?

I have 11 tattoos, the most recent 3 being done in the last week on my upper arm (starting a sleeve). The least painful was probably my shoulders and the new one on the outside of my upper arm. The most painful were my wrist and the new bicep and tricep ones. In fact, the bicep and tricep ones are tender, red, and feel like a bad, blistering sunburn at the moment. I can't say that any of mine were so horribly painful that I couldn't deal with them and I've never cried (I cry when I get headaches, though). I'd do every single one of them again in a second. I think if you want them bad enough, something kicks in and the pain isn't so bad--at least that's the case with me.

I've had tons of piercings- tongue, belly button, nostril, monroe, cartilage, and more. BUT I just got my first tattoo a few days ago on my hip. I went in thinking that if I can handle all those piercings without even a blink then I could definitely do this. No. It was utterly painful. I did it without any tears or noise, but the entire time my face was distorted and I couldn't think clearly. I'm scared to ever get another one.

i want to start off by saying that i have an incredible pain tolerance. it has alot to do with mentality, i have been doing martial arts since i was a kidlet, and the mantra 'pain aint no thang' has helped me get through grueling physical exams, as well as a few root canals ;)

my tattoo is on my side. it's three birds sitting on a wire (bob marley reference) its runs over both my hip, and my ribs onto my belly. i went in knowing how badly it would hurt going over the bones (i'm a pretty boney person), but surprisingly it was no biggie. then she crossed over on to my belly, and i immediately saw white and passed out. i came to, and was given a lollipop when she asked me if i wanted to keep it at two birds. 'it's 3 little birds, no 2!' i cried, so i rolled up my tee shirt, shoved it in my mouth and bit down hard.

well worth the pain.

I have 7 tattoos so far, and my least painful were the two I have behind my ears. My most painful was the back of my calf. My fiance has 7 also and he said his wrist and elbows hurt like a bitch, and I know this for fact since I watched him get them. It was kind of amusing, lol. I'm looking into getting one on my ankle or hips soon.

I would def. have to say the ribs are the most painful! I have tattoos going up both of my sides on the ribs and i was in tears both times, as for least painful id have to say my wrists or lower back. Though lower back didnt hurt as much as it felt like electric shocks on the spine, my wrists i could have slept through, and hips wern't that bad either.

Hey guys,
I'm looking into getting a tattoo. Probably just forgivness in chinese, now the only two places i would consider is behin my ear, or to the side of my hip but lower towards my pelvic bone if you get what I mean. I'm okay with the pain of needles. I got my belly button pierced but just about passe out from the thought of something foreign being stuck through my body. What is the least painful of the two, and do you think I can handle it ? And any advice is appreciated. aahha

I only have a few tattoos. Both on the hip. The one on the left side didnt hurt that much but the one I got a few days ago on the right side...holy sh--!
One thing that was humbling was that when the artist was doing the preliminaries with me standing up straight, I got really light headed and almost fainted, before he even started drilling.. I had to lay down twice. Apparently its something about the way your blood flows when you are standing up straight. Anyway, it was embarrassing since I really wasnt nervous or anything.

I would say the ditch (other side of the elbow where the skin is loose). The shin has an unusual bone grinding feeling that I did not like for my entire leg sleeve (I have abnormally large legs/shins). The hand (between the forfinger and the thumb). These places where not good, but everywhere I got tattooed had different feelings, skin being shredded, light tickle, bone being grinded, fatty tissue being eletricuted with needles.. that kind of feeling. I think everyone reacts to the differnt feelings differently.

I have both arms sleved, my chest and my throat and one on my ribs near my stomach.

while being tattooed i noticed diffrent kinds of pain

on my arms right by the wrist stung more than anything it wasn't intolerable. both elbows sort of stung but it wasnt too bad. in the crease of my elbow (inside) it seemed like a sharp pain, again not too bad.

the chest was a whole diffrent story, some parts much worse than others, worst being around the nipples and the middle of the chest. everywhere on the chest hurt like hell, and since its a large area, you don't seem to get that numbing effect you get when a smaller area is tattooed for a longer period of time.

i got my throat done today. on either side of my adams apple it was quite unpleasent, not from the pain but more from the pressure on the throat from the hand and tattoo gun.

one of my collar bones hurt really bad, but only because i shattered my collar bone a few years ago and it didn't heal right.

when i got my ribs done i couldnt stop laughing.

worst so far is deffinatly the chest. but it was totaly worth it

Dead interesting thread, just lost a good hour reading it ;) Have tatts on shoulders, lower back, upper back and stomach, no probs.
Just had my 4th 3 hour session on my torso piece, japanese fire dragon from hip to collar bone, up left ribs and crossing onto stomach and back.
Fuck...me! Other shading sessions have been pretty intense, I'm a good sitter and don't move or complain, but this one left me shaking as soon as I was off the couch, not sure whether it's the density he needed for the red flames or what, but I actually think my body went into shock after...passed out for the rest of the day feeling like I had flu.
I'm a pretty skinny (ok, pretty emaciated really) guy so it was all straight onto bone or muscle, though the hot spots were definately armpit, around nipple, around the tender area just below the ribs (front more than back).
Cred to all of you who say you've sat for like 5 hours or whatever, but in all honesty I'd rather gargle cat vomit than add an extra 2 hours to my sesh!
1 more 3 hour sesh left then never a rib again! (Looking amazing though, so worth it)

i have 3 tattoos and i think I picked bad spots for them all. On is on the inside/top part of the arch on my foot which was my first one, one on my hip running down to my knee so it went down my inner thigh and i got one right behind the ear. That one hurt the least and it was more like an itch the whole time. Generally, my boyfriend tells me that getting tattoos where the sun hits hurts the least. He's 72 so i believe him. But I'm also a teacher and needed discreet spots to put them so there you go.

I just got my first tattoo today about 12 hours ago. I got a tribal style cross done with alot of deep black coloring in it, right on my upper back from shoulder blade to shoulder blade. Everyone i talked to previous said it will hurt for the first ten minutes then go numb, yah fucking right. That thing hurt more and more as he went especially on my spine in the lower part of my neck where he was coloring it black. It felt like he was burning me, and it was hurting the nerves in my arm causing me to twitch and piss him off a lil. Even though that hurt alot more then i thought i can't wait to get my next one done.

Well I have all of my back covered a little bit on my leg some chest and upper arm is getting worked on more within two weeks. For the least painful spots is easy as pie. Go with the arm or shoulder area, seriously they are the least of everything. Then I would have to say the leg was second easiest. The spine is on one of the more painful spots, and if you are just like me and get something to go down the whole spine in one sitting you are going to really hate that spot. But of the very worst I would have to go with center of your chest (floating ribs hurt more then the sten for some reason). The ribs suck ass, but the most painful spot had to be in between the fingers. If you are talking about pain check that spot out. But still over all they all hurt less then having a needle shoved though my dick so go for them.

everyone is different what hurts like hell for one dosnt hurt so bad for others but i seriously have to laugh when people say it dosnt hurt at all
now unless you have a local anastetic or topical there will be pain how you handle the pain is in your hands

dont go all stressed out expecting yourself to have a heart attack as soon as the needle hits your skin but dont expecting itll feel like some guy drawing on your with a sharpie

do have something light to eat and drink ive seen people go with nothing inside there stomache and faint because when there endomorphines have kicked in there blood sugar drops low

just chill out have a chat with the artist they will try a small line first

try meditating if your in for a long sitting works for me the guy i got my last tattoo done by kept shaking me thinking i had either fallen asleep or passed out

what works for one wont work for another

but tattoos do hurt

I have a tattoo on my left shoulder blade that extends to the top of my shoulder, towards my arm pit, and very close to my spine (it's a bird and the wings extend pretty far). For me the worst part was near my spine, though the shoulder and near the arm pit were pretty tender, I fainted when he got to the closest point, where my shoulder blade ends and the needle is hitting ribs. When he first started, I kept thinking that I would totally be okay with just a black line on my back for the rest of my life, but I'm really glad that I powered through it with only one fainting spell. It helped that my artist was friendly, albeit heavy-handed, and I was with my then-boyfriend, who brought me skittles and soda and made it a lot more fun by being there.

The funny thing is, the shading and color didn't hurt as bad as the outlining for me. A lot of these posts mention the shading as being awful, but honestly, it kind of felt itchy but that's it.

I'm going back soon for an inner arm tattoo, and I know it's going to hurt, but I also know I'm going to love the end result. Like everyone else is saying, don't choose to get a tattoo in a spot because it's the least painful... get it somewhere that you think it'll look good!

Your posts have been pretty helpful.. I've pretty much made up my mind that my tattoo virginity will be lost on the back of the neck. I'm sure it will hurt like a bitch.. But it's the only place I can see actually getting tatooed. I have 2 kids and plan on having more... I've been lucky enough to shrink back down to a size 3 each time and have no stretch marks.. but most other places at some point will stretch during child birth and there is nothing worse then a tattooed up mom with ugly ass nasty stretch marks running though all of the tats on her body. I'm deathly afraid of needles.. and am taking the plunge on friday... i'll post pics soon after. I have enjoyed reading all your posts and advice! ~Gini Lynn~

I dont think its about how many tattoos you have its about where there at.
I'm looking at some of these were people have many tattoos but probably all on there arms or back. By far the most painful thing i have experienced not only among tattoos but other things as well is a tattoo along the side of my Rib cage. I know a few others that feel this way as well. Least painful would have to be the shoulder area.

Just got my rib piece done today--I have had 4 other tattoos done before--and I was terrified beforehand after being warned of the pain. It took about 2 hours, and while it was a bit painful it was bearable. It was more like an irritating sting, and at one point it felt as though my guy was punching me repeatedly...he was surprised when I said that it ached. The guys at the shop seemed to think that I held up pretty well, especially when he got to the spot right under my ribcage and angled towards my back--that part sucked a bit more than the rest.

For reference, I'm only 110lbs and there's not a lot of fat over the area. I've seen big dudes cry when getting similar tattoos, so it really is all about your pain tolerance.

It's been 3 days and my right calf muscle tightens up if I sit/lay down too long. The more I walk the better it feels. The good news is it's getting better. My ankle & foot are also a bit swollen which I wasn't expecting.

For those who are asking about specific areas...I just spent a good amount of time reading these replies, and most of your questions would be answered if you would go back and read what other people posted.

As for me, I only have one tattoo. It is on my upper back/shoulder, full color, and took about 3 hours. It hurt, but it was definitely tolerable. There were parts that hurt more than others, and a couple times I thought I would have to take a break, but just as I thought that, he would stop to wipe the ink, and I would be ready for another go. It's true what another poster said, that as soon as the needle stops, the pain stops.

Mostly, I found myself bored from 3 hours of just sitting there. My arms kept falling asleep from being in the same position, as well. That was probably more annoying than the actual tattoo.

I am contemplating getting my inner wrist tattooed next, but I am a teacher, so it will depend on whether I feel I can keep it hidden at work or not. (Makeup? Watch? Bracelets?)

Other than that, I am thinking about the top of my foot and above my ankle for future tattoos.

I just got a tattoo last night on my lower back/mid back (semi-tramp stamp) and it was highly painful on the lower part, and on the sides. Although it is unbearable, it is tolerable. If i got through it then anyone can. However i got a tattoo on my forearm and it was hardly painful. It had a few scary parts but nothing serious. The arm is probably gonna be the least painful spot to get a tattoo, definitely!
Good Luck

The first was on the top of my foot (it's large and pretty much covers the entire top and extends to the big toe and wraps around the side a little) and I think it was extremely painful! It was not painful enough to make me swear off getting tattooed.. but it was pretty bad. I had to squeeze my husband's hand the entire time, my eyes were watering.. etc etc. I agree that it felt like someone was slowly scraping the skin off my foot with a scorching hot razor blade. But, of course, it is SO worth it once the tattoo heals!!

Today I'm getting one on the top of my back centered along my spine.. wanted to get it on the back of my neck but it's a little bit too big. I'm nervous but also super excited!

Good luck to everyone getting his/her first tattoo.. or 20th tattoo, whatever. It's a really liberating and empowering experience in my opinion. :)

I currently have two tattoos. My first was on the back of my neck. Did not hurt at all. Literally.

Second one was two days ago,... On my chest. It's a heart with wings and stars that goes from collar bone to collar bone down my sternum.

I have a high pain tolerance and that was the most excruiating pain of my life!!!. (I'm female by the way). It may not have hurt so bad if my artist didnt have such a heavy hand but jesus was it painful. The breast tissue also hurt A LOT!

I did not cry which I was proud off but for some reason my whole body started to shake. Expecially my jaw (which may have been a reaction to the vibrations).

It currentl;y is very brused, sucks to sleep, and is in general awkward. But LOOKS amazing.

Honestly, I say if you want a tattoo go for it. It's worth the pain and you always have it with you.

I plan on getting to half sleeves, a full back piece, more added to my chest, two on my feet, and a HUGE thigh piece. GO FOR IT!!! Your body is a Canvas =D

I have 7 tattoos and the latest one that i recieved was on my knee. That was probably the worst one that i had but i found a piece for the back of my knee and i dont know how bad it hurts. I got my first tat at the age of 15 and the pain is worth it.

Hey, I'm going to be going in for my first tattoo within the next month or so. I'm having someone sketch it out. And I was wondering, how bad the chest hurts? I have a fairly high pain tolerance, and would just like peoples insight. =] Its a graduation present/memorial tat for my grandfather. =]

Thanks

Just got my 4th tattoo. First 3 (on shoulder & both wrists) were sincerely fun and pleasurable expericene. Even on the bony parts of wrists were tolerable. However, two nights ago I got my entire right elbow done. I was fine until the artist hit the tip and inside of my elbow--holy crap! The outline was rough, but the shading (and reshading due to toughness of elbow) and coloring were much worse. At the end, even cleaning the tat so the artist could see what he was doing sucked. Worst part is that I have to go back for major re-touch. Maybe i am a wimp, but ouch.

I've got 6 tattoos and they all have some pain just to set that straight. Across the shoulder blades isn't too bad, really bearable. Forearm, back of the forearm, and top of the shoulder are a breeze. The ribs and chest, however, are a different league. The ribcage is really annoying and hurts like a bastard but the center of the chest between the nips is fuckin brutal. I just sat for 5 hours getting a heart with chains and a padlock in the center of my chest and I can't imagine a tattoo being any worse. I love that shit so it was definitely worth it but man o man get ready for a ride if you decide to do it.

I got a tattoo on the front of my foot, from near the sole of my foot to circle near my ankle bone. Okay, to say it 'hurt' would be a MAJOR understatment, I dont think my Mum has regained the use of her hands just yet, [only been 2 weeks since I had it done].

It was only afterwards that some people told that it is 'apparently' a very painful spot. ¬_¬ I DONT have any tolerance for pain, but it looked so pretty! And there was really no going back after the tattooist started his tortur- i mean work hehe!

And the references to sweaty hands made me laugh!!! It must be your body telling you you are having a tattoo because I was making waaaaterfalls! >.< Built in human instinct that!

I should imagine VEEEEERRY sensative areas hurting, and maybe places near or on the bone because the parts near the sole of the foot had me climbing up the chair and also near the ankle bone.

iv got lots of tattoos, including the tops of my hands and fingers, and the worst spots are. ( im a guy so this is geared towards guys, i dont know how girls feel persay)

Your ditches - this includes, knee ditch (back of knee), elbow ditch, arm pit ditch, inner thigh. Basically a ditch is anywhere that your main joints come together creating a soft spot of skin.

Top of foot/hand - about the same feeling depending ofcourse on the amount of coverage, the more you cover the more it hurts. Both of these spots tend to be a lot of direct bone and thin skin.

Neck - My favorite, but irritating for sure, its uncomfortable and louder (tattoo machine will be right next to your ears) also depending on placement of the tatooo ie, side to throat, how you need to sit for yout artist might be akward.

Knuckles,Fingers,Toes - Feel the burn! lol you will get a warm sensation from these but over all generally dont take long so not a over all bad tattoo.

Basically with the exception of the extremes, such as genitals, toung, bottoms of your foot, palms of your hands, eye balls and eye lids, most tattoos will only get so bad, so once you have sat through your first few you get an idea for how bad it can get and how much you can take, eventually you will gain a tollerance ( SMALL DEGREE) and then if you feel ready try banging out one of the listed spots.

Hope this helps.

I have a large piece that covers my entire right rib cage starting above my hip and works its way up my ribs behi nd mmy shoulder down my arm and into my chest. By far, the ribs, especially on the bone itself, was nearly impossible to bear. I made it through the outline and am waiting to go back for coloring. I can't even imagine the pain of coloring on my ribs. When he was on my back and away from my ribs i almost cried with joy because it nearly felt good compared to the pain on the ribs.

I just got my first tattoo done on Earth Day (April 22). Its My name and a small butterfly on the inside of my right hip. Right before the artist started the only other guy working there asked him if he had told me it was a very painful spot to get it at. My palms were sweating and I had cold chills. But once he got started I only experianced a little pain every now and then. Part of the butterfly and the first letter is on the actual hip bone and surprisingly when he got to that part it was a mixture of hurt and tickle! More tickle than hurt. ^_^ So I guess what spots are the least or most painful depends on the person. Also, Mind over matter is deff. something I agree on.

The one on my ribs tickled, my ankle wasn't bad. The one on my leg was fine too, until it got to the knee. THAT hurt. But all in all, I'm happy with them all. I'm waitingto get my foot done and dreading it *grin*

Well so far i have 4 tats: a peace sign behind my ear (least painful, does't hurt at all), two celtic pieces- one on each shoulder blade and a large piece on my left ribs which was by far the most painful. it was a 5 hour session with two hours of touchups. don't take pain too much into consideration since the pain will last maybe a week, but the tat is for a lifetime of enjoyment.

By far the most painful tattoo I have ever gotten was on my nut sack. I got it so it looked like two grapes on a branch (my penis)

The least painful was probably around my butt crack because I'm used to things going in there like needles and gay sex too. :)

I also have my ring finger and my lower back done they really didn't hurt that bad. Oh but the lip only takes like 5 minutes if that so it hurts but it's not like a two or three hour sitting.

I would have to say the ribs and the hips have been the worst for me. I don't think i have ever been in more pain in my entire life. I did a piece from right beneath my chest down to my hips on both sides and across the stomach and by the time just the outline was finished my body was in shock. I had always avoided the rib area because of all my buddies horror stories and i have to agree with them, but if you go in with the right state of mind and really do want what you are getting. The pain is all worth it once you stand up and see it finished.

I have to say That the first 2 were fine, didnt hurt infact if you just lislten to the noise of the machine its enough to put you into a trance. My third (the one up my ribs) I was really worried about because I had been told its painful, tbh it wasnt as bad as I expected until he got to the top of my ribs near my boob and OMG that was sore. From my own experiences the outline is the worst and if your having the whole tat done in one sitting by the time you get to the colour/shading that part is num anyway. Been in today to put the final details into my garter design which Im having done next week, waahooo cant wait!

My last tattoo was a tribal turtle on my foot. That one hurt so bad. It felt like someone was taking a razor blade to the top of my foot. I'm about to get a chest piece done next week and I'm almost positive that it will not be pleasant. Anyone?

So, being the yuppie town i live in, and my attraction to ink. it was a must. i decided to get the quote on the back of my father, sister and brothers headstones. "I am Right Here With You". i wanted it on my arm, my artist RAVEN, drew it up and started. Having never had a tattoo before, i didn't know the difference between "heavy" and "light" hands. So he started. Wrist to shoulder ball. It felt much like a barbecue brush, running up and down my arm at an insane pace. Hitting the tendons sucked. As did the inner elbow, the inner elbow made me extremely nauseous. The ball of the shoulder and the top of the bicep was also ridiculous.... once again same artist different arm, same spot. just shorter, wrist to below the inner elbow. Once again tendons sucked :)

Other than that the rest, considering the heavy hands, was completely tolerable

I just got both my sides done (between the hip and ribs). There was some overlap onto the rib area and that was by far the most painful. And for any women who have stretch marks, not sure how you would hold up but mine hurt pretty bad where part of my design overlapped them. Chubbier areas hurt less, for me at least.
I think it's different for everyone. If you can locate your erogenous zones, just know those areas have more nerves endings and it may hurt more to get ink done there. My next will be on the shoulder blade

I had my first tat (on my upper arm/shoulder) in 1999, right after I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. That caused me very little pain, other than the upper part, where the arm meets the shoulder. I had my second in 2007--a large lower back piece which took 3 1/2 hours and hurt like hell! I swore I would never get another one. Now my son, daughter and I are planning to get matching tattoos of a seagull to memorialize my husband, who died in 2008. After reading these posts, I've narrowed the location down to 3 areas: left breast, back of neck (near hairline) or directly over shoulder blade. I am quite thin, plus, I have a very low pain threshold due to the fibro. Could some of you who also have low pain thresholds tell me which of these areas might be the easiest for me??? Thanks for the advice!!

Well, excluding the twig, berries, beef curtains, and gooch (which I'll never expierence). The worst spot for me was my neck/throat/collar bone. I could feel electric in my dome. I was jammin to tupac and biting a rag, it hurt. But for any new "tattooees", don't let anyone tell you they don't hurt, because they ALL do. Now some places hurt less than others. My arms weren't bad. But my neck and chest near the bones....that's a carnival!

Love the pain, because you'll love the tattoo

I'm heavily tattooed...for me, my chest pieces hurt quite a bit by the sternum, collarbone and nipple...my sleeves were OK except for the inside of the bicep/underarm...backpiece wasn't too bad, side ribs were a bitch...leg was fine, hurt a bit by the ankle, shin bone was surprisingly easy.

I've gotten a few tattoo's but I've always wanted one on the outside of my foot going up my ankle. I don't have the highest pain tolerance in the world, anyone have any tips? Is it super painful?

I have 3 tattoo's.. My first is between my shoulder blades and finish's just above my spine, it didn't really hurt at all except when he was workin up my spine it felt like he was tattooin right at the top of my neck so i felt a twinge then. My second is on the inside of my right wrist (just 3 letters and a heart and i felt no pain at all! And my 3rd is on the inside of my left forearm which starts from my wrist to half way up my arm (between wrist and elbow) Is a shootin star which starts off as a large star then onwards there are swirls and little stars with lots of colours now the outline felt fine but as soon as the colouring started esp on the big star i felt pain cos he blended the colours and feelin those 7 needles scraping my skin bloody hurt but hey im not put off cos it looks sweet and now i have the tattoo bug cos iv got 3 more tatts planned so far. To me the pain is bearable thats all i can say really and you gotta think to yourself it will be over with just like child birth as an example but no where as painful as that lol cos im a 24yr old with a lil girl so to say i don't have a high pain tolerance at least i know it will be over with eventually an tattoos look effin gorgeous!

I am pretty much covered, both sleeves and back etc. from memory i remember the arm pit area and around the nipple hurting quite bad.
I have seen and tattooed quite a few different people, and they react different to different area's they have had tattooed.
Some find the arms hurt, others don't feel it..
But the arm pit area was the pits for me..

If you are looking forward in getting a tattoo on your chest and you r wondering if it would hurt well the answer is yes it will hurt but not as bad as u may think, when i got mine i was getting ready to suffer but when the needle started to pierce my chest i was like "thats it?" i actually thought it was a good pain like it just feels uncomfortaable but nothing so bad that makes u cry or scream or anything, but when u get to the bone in between your chest that one hurts big time! im not going to lie but that part hurt! and was the only part that made me breathe hard and make weird expresions on my face xD but since im skinny it probably hurt more than normal since the more bone the more it hurts. But in my opinion the chest is a great place to get a tatto, it doesnt hurt that bad and is a place where if u want u can cover it up using regular shirts or show it off with cool v-neck shirts, tank tops or dressing shirts :D

So I have 7 tattoos already. Back of neck, lower back, side of calf, large one in middle of back between shoulder blades, stomach (OUCH!), and one on each side of my very lower back/upper butt area. The one on my stomach was by far the worst out of all of mine. The one in the center of my back was a little tender the further out the edges went. The rest weren't so bad. Of course they weren't pleasant but very very tolerable.

However, I just finished designing my next one. It’s going to run down the front of my bicep, shoulder to elbow, and wrap around most of both sides. I am a little worried about the pain on the inner bicep. I just hope it’s not as bad as the stomach!

Oh, and I’m a girl. 5’1” 120lbs. Don’t know if that makes a difference on the pain scale!

Well I only have one tattoo right now, and that was on the inside of my bicep. My towards my forearm felt like nothing. When he got towards more my arm pit, felt like a 3 inch blade was getting stabbed into my arm slowly, I was miserable :)

Getting one on the inside of my right feel/foot.
Pretty sure that one is going to hurt exponentially worse...oh well

I have 5 tattoos. I have a rib piece, both arms on inside of the biceps, outside of arm, and inside my lip. The worse one was the rib piece, but not just the rib cage. The worse part of it was right on the hip. I almost vomited. The insides of the arms, they hurt, but not that bad. Mine go from elbow to armpit, and by the elbows hurt and inside the armpit hurts 100 times more. Inside of lip and outside of the arm doesnt really hurt at all.

Ok. I have 10 tattoos in total.
Black Star on Inner thigh.. Least painful tattoo to date about 1-2/10
A bird on the back of each ankle, just above the achiles tendon.. rather painful, left side hurt more.. around 6/10
A pair of cherries and the number 13 on bottom of my right leg, kind of painful but bearable, very 'catscratch' like.. 6/10
A shooting star with wings on each hip, left side was my first tattoo so painful 5-6/10, right side was easy as pie, 3/10
A small heart and tribal design on my inner right wrist.. nice and easy, over quickly aswell 3-4/10
the Cream Logo (associated with trance music) on the back of my neck. very strange being tattooed there, lots of nerves, and it vibrated my whole spine.. about 5/10
Est.1990 in graffiti style writing, on the back of my right thigh, just under my bum, and Made in England with St Georges Cross on the back of my left thigh.. Most painful tattoos to date, very fleshy and sheer agony.. 8-9/10.

So theres my pain scale, however im due for a rib piece tomorrow so im sure my perceptions will change.. x

I got my first tattoo recently, it starts about 4 inches above my hip and works down to the top of my thigh. I have to say from the hip down it was virtually pain free, but above the hip hurt like fucking hell!!!! Was so worth it though, I would go through it again.

I got a tattoo on my right lower back bellow the panty line. I am a mother of twins so of course I have stretch marks. And I have to say the only time it hurt was when he went into one of my craters. 2 years later I went back and got 1 on the left side and the same exact thing. So I would have to say in my opinion, stay away from any areas that have stretch marks.

I have a lot of upper body tattoos and I would have to say that any tattoo on the arm is relatively painless except over veiny parts in which I am pretty veiny but it is tolerable. Shoulders are painless. The chest is higher on the scale but is not bad until you hit the sternum or the collar bone. Basically it is a matter of the person on which the opinion is on what whould hurt the most. I would assume any bony or veiny part of the body would hurt like hell lol but it also depends on how much meat you have on your bones, pain tolerance and how and where your nerves are located.

I have some 39 tattoos- back, chest, shoulders and arms are fairly covered, plus two on my stomach, 3 on each leg, 2 small ones on my ribcage and one on my ass. For me the least painful places are the shoulders and the outsides of the arms. The most painful tats I've got are the ones on my ribcage, one on each side. Each only took about 10 minutes to do but it was a VERY LONG 10 minutes each time - both hurt like (insert suitably strong word). next most painful place is the stomach, after that is the lower back or anywhere near the spine. But so-far the most painful is definitely the ribs. I'm thinking of getting a Smiley Face on the glans of my penis - how would that compare in pain to, say , the ribs?

I have just come from a tatto artist who has inked a smiley face on the helmet of my cock. I was surprised that it did'nt hurt half as much as I thought it would. It was extremely uncomfortable, yes, but the pain was bearable. I think the tats I got on my ribcage and stomach hurt a lot more than the head of my cock. But then again, the smiley face was a very simple image, an more complex piece would have hurt more.

Hands down most painful place was my ribcage. My arms are pretty covered, my collarbone, chest, my foot and ankle, my legs up just past the knee and I have a few big back pieces. I decided to extend a tribal downy right side to my hip and my gods it sucked. I mean...there's usually one or two pinchy spots in every tattoo but my ribs? The whole thing was painful and I never got into the zone like I do with every other tattoo...it was the only one I didn't enjoy. After that? I'd say on the ankle bone was less than fun...but the foot was fine. Upper inner arms also less than fun. Maybe back too? I can't really remember but I went five hours in a session and I remember my back feeling like raw hamburger. I was good with my breasts being tattooed and even tho in the middle my collarbone felt like someone was using a razor blade it really wasn't that bad

I have tattoos all overy body, including my stomach, ribcage, ass cheeks, even my penis, but nothing hurt as much as getting flames tattooed on my groin, in the pubic area right above the base of my penis. That hurt more than the penis itself. The only thing that I have experienced that has hurt more is having a tooth abscess. That's how intense it was. I'm pleased with the results, but I sure would *not* want to repeat the experience.
