Tattoo ink with ashes

Posted by pitchblack187@aol.com from IP: 24.187.35.145 on 06/11/06

My friend doesn't want to get a tattoo done proffesionly and is doing it himself using ink made out of ashes from burnt paper mixed in water. Is that ink safe to use? Thanks.

He thinks that it's cooler and he doesn't want to pay anything. He is either going to do that or use pen ink. I told him to a least use india ink but he said no. What can happen to him if he uses the ashes and water?

your "friend" (wink wink, elbow elbow) should abandon the idea of trying to be cool, because your "friend" (wink wink, elbow elbow) is choosing to be pathetic, and I hope this "friend" (wink wink, elbow elbow) gets treated accordingly afterwards.

I guess at the end of the day, if your friend knows right from wrong, and chooses wrong, then he deserves whatever happens in the outcome, sorry to say, but that's a life lesson, not just in tattooing.

Pitch black...It is commendable that you are trying to protect your friend but sometimes all you can do is wait for em to fall down so you can be there to pick em up. If this friend has his mind set on fuckin himself up you can't stop him and nothing we say will make a difference...wish it would man!

Just be there to rush him to the ER when the pus starts flowin and his skin swells like somethin dead on the side of the road..

HINT:..if the infected tattoo starts to smell REALLY bad..he has probably contracted gas gangrene and amputation is necessary.

Sicerely wish we could have helped more!...TAz

Paper ashes. Whatever. Tell your friend he is a moron. Everyone knows you burn the soles of your shoes with a lighter and then mix the ash with urine. If you're gonna die from infection, at least do it right.

In all senses it's ok? Are you being serious? Because I can only imagine the quality of his sterilization and methods of preventing cross contamination is as stellar as his choice of ink. He's an idiot. In is in NO sense ok.

I personally used slate. I sat it in alcohol for a night, ground it up and mixed it with boiling water, took a paintbrush handle w/o the bristles, split the end, inserted a sterilized needle, and went to town. I've had mine for 3 years now, never had a problem except it's a little faded.

Couple of hundred years ago ash/water or pigments from plants were all they had back then. Some artist are trained to do this old style type of tattooing with years of research and training. But its now 2010 and "some" of the human race is a little more advanced now. Infections, hepatitis, staff can be real bad or deadly if you not carefull. so tell him to reconsider( and i know some people you just cant get it through there head) and if he dont, just be there for him and hope nothing goes wrong. Good luck

Juvy prison camp style... I know a guy with one of these. He is alive and well and still has his leg... with the shittiest looking tat I have ever seen. Unsafe... you bet. It sounds to me like hes attention seeking.. hes probably getting off on the fact that you care sooo much. He has to know how dumb it is but hell I guess we have all done dumb things before...Good Luck.

Actually, there are some people who might want to get a tattoo for religeous purposes and going to a Pro would detract from that goal.

Using India Ink makes the most sense for sterilization purposes however, as stated, Indians and other cultures have been giving themselves tattoos for thousands of years using ashes. The ashes would be sterile and it would be the water that you add that would potentially contaminate the ink or the needle used.

I just converted to the Coptic Faith and they all get tattoos of the Coptic Cross on their right wrist and, other than having a monk perform the process, I would have to do it myself cause going to a Pro just doesn't cut it. So, I am probably gonna give myself one and the ashes seem to be the best way to go.

This would also allow me to make the whole process more religeous from start to finish.

High heat makes most anything sterile. I'm hoping to make my 1st exp eramental batch soon. I will try to run it through an old fax machine to see how it performs. Sifting before boil and after so no big chuncks are in the mix.Wish me luck.I have plenty of tats though,I'm just a cheepoe and love to make stuff from scratch.printer ink cost way to much people.

Tell ur friend that its safe as long as u soak the needle in alchohol for at least 2 mins. NEVER REUSE A NEEDL EVEN IF U SOAK IT IN ALCHOHOL FIRST USE A NEW ONE AND STERELIZE IT. Also wrap a thread around the needle keeping the end exposed, soak the thread and after ur done keep it bandaged with antibiotic ointment for at least 3 weeks.

Funny answers to an interesting question!

A few points:

1. India Ink IS made from ashes, sorta. It's made from soot, called lampblack, named after the black soot that used to form on the inside of the glass of kerosene lamps. For India Ink, soot from any organic source, such as burning wood, was used.

2.Ash and soot are sterile.Ash often contains less carbon than soot, so less black. Another way to make India ink is to first make charcoal, then grind the charcoal to a fine powder with a mortar and pestle.

3.To make the liquid ink, use distilled water or alcohol to liquify the soot or pulverized charcoal. Voila - cheap, safe, simple India ink (there are other recipes out there, but this is the most basic,)

4. Following sterile technique (washing hands, disinfecting area to be tattooed, using a sterile needle and safe ink) minimizes the risk of infection, as does caring for the tattoo (keeping it clean, covered, and coated w/ vitamin e and/or antibiotics if necessary.

Oh yeah, make sure your mortar & pestle are sterile too, if you're gonna make it that way.

You know people tend to get the ashy remains of loved ones tattooed into their skin... soo, if vaporized human in all its glory of spleen, colon, bladder, intestines, marrow, and hair, etc... while its really taboo, i some how think burned paper will be alright as long as sanitary methods are used

I have seen this done many times, it works, but probably wont last more than 2 months if u dont do it right (which is very very difficult). I have never seen anybody get an infection this way either, but they usually don't fill in the tats or go very deep. I have given one of these tats before to a friend.

Ash and soot are Sterile. i have reseached into this and i now have a tattoo on my ankle done in ink i have made with ash and water, its perfectly fine and hasent become infected at all... Just make sure to disinfect Everything involved in the tattooing proces. keep it moisterised with vitaminE cream about 3-6 times a day for a few weeks. if any infections occur DEFFENTLY see a doctor, but... i doubt this will happen.

Nothing will happen to him if he uses ashes and water ashes are not toxic and in fact alot of people use ashes when doing a homemade tattoo and alot of people in prison use them. . .but it would be even better if he were to use india ink or go to a prfessional.

Actually ash is grey. What is traditionally used as a black pigment, even in modern tattoo inks is carbon. Good charcoal (not briquettes they contain glues and binders) is allmost pure carbon. As far as safety goes, people have been using it for tattoos for thousands of years. Some color tattoo ink pigments that professionals buy contain meatallic salts that are toxic to humans I.E. lead, cinnibar, cadmiun....etc etc. some contain propylene glycol as a carrier (the liquid part). That's also called anti-freeze for cars which is also toxic. My point is, get off your ass and do some real research. Don't rely on dildos in a forum to provide the answers. Some can be misleading, others full of crap.

i wonder what all the original tribes would think of all the elitist snobs who act like being a tattoo artist is being some fag in a biker gang?

they'd probably laugh at you, cut your head off, and shrink it while they sat there with their hand poke tattoo stick and charcoal based tattoo ink commemorating your over muscled or meth'd out face onto their skin.

tattooing of today is a fucking sham of hucksters trying to make something that was pure into an elitist racket that is all about money and handshakes- why do you think every tattoo artist buys their shit from china and "builds" new machines that are just refurbushed, and then claims that china makes shit.

I would rather have my tattoos done by tribal scratchers any day- at least they wouldn't act like a bunch of over ego'd jock meat heads and it would be someone who understands the shamanic point of what a fucking sigil it...
