It's really not that complicated. Like the dude said we cant judge it if we weren't there. I have yet to see the pics so I can't comment on them. As for it giving us a bad name I don't buy it. Just remember this...you are posting on a site that is looked up to by prospective tattoo owners (aka, people who want to be inked), and disrepsect here is just as bad. While she should not have done it, it is true that you don't know the situation. And, if you are not affiliated with Kat in any way, then her tattooing in an un-safe way has nothing to do with what business you will bring in. I am not going to stop going to the hospital because, over in Cali (the other side of the US), some doctor messed up and did the wrong thing to their patient, just like i'm not gonna go to an artist because a different one messed up.

Yes, Kat is in the public eye because she has been on Miami ink, and should take that into concideration before posting pictures like that. But, just as you see her as putting a bad mark on tattoo artists by posting them, i could easily turn around and say that the short tempers of artists on this forum make a mark on my view of artists too...

Wow, Oliver, from a consumer perspective I think this does reflect on the industry in general. and as the kick ass artists you all are I think up and coming young artists look to you all as examples to follow. Like it or not, your excellence does lead to some responsibility. As for the consumers, as a general rule, they are not educated, jump to conclusions, assume the worst, etc. That said, as a consumer, my worry is more for the artists involved as they are truly the ones put at most risk by the practice. You guys are all fantastic artists and being the educated consumer, I'd not hesitate to get a tattoo from anyone in your shop (I'd be expecting gloves and I'm sure I wouldn't have to even ask since you dont know me anyway) I'd be really sad to hear though, that any one of you were sick or dying from catching something while tattooing "bareback" It would be a great loss to the industry and to humanity. I understand certain artists may tattoo certain people in certain situations without gloves, just as a man would not use a condom with his wife (usually?)... I do agree that a photo out in public where the uneducated or uninformed can see it could lead to uneducated or uninformed ramifications. Whatever people decide to do behind closed doors, some photos should be left out of public view. But then again what the hell do I know! I see no conundrum here, I agree with everything you posted and don't see how it conflicts with what I said...Even with the constant and regular testing I think porn stars are definitely high risk partners and I wouldn't have unprotected sex with one for any amount of money even if I was unfortunate enough to be their spouse. I would, however, with my wife (that's a little more personal than I wanted to get on a public forum, but oh well). I do think it is irresponsible to show unprotected recreational sex in porn (that said I must admit I'm not above enjoying said irresponsible porn). There are Johns out there who will pay extra for bareback (unprotected) sex. I think that is highly irresponsible and stupid, but neither of the above is the scenario I am putting forward. I don't think there is a subculture of tattoo customers who offer to pay more for gloveless tattooing (though now that I think about it there seems to be a fetishist for every unconcievable act...) If there were, I doubt there would be any reputable tattoo artist who would accept the risk to their license or own health...
I agree with your underlying point and I respect your proffessionalism, but I still don't see the "many flaws" you say there are in what I'm putting forward. I'm not even saying that the Kat photos meet my acid test in terms of acceptable risk, I'm just, as requested, offering a scenario that does. Even if the Kat photos did meet the criteria, I maintain that publishing such photos was/would be irresponsible in any scenario. It's not like she doen't have enough opportunity to flesh-out her portfolio with incredible work without said photo.

I dunno, I just checked out his work...didn't look at all of it, but the few I looked at were pretty sweet...but then what the hell do I know! Says he's been tattooing for 9 years and his MySpace says he's 25...Started tattooing at 14...precocious! Seriously, defensive 20 yr old attitude aside, It would be a shame to lose someone as talented as Mr Miller seems to be. Just in terms of professional image and or the reputation of the industry I think it's a mistake to air this practice on public forums even if it is a practice among some in the industry under certain conditions. In terms of the quality of his work I'd be very happy to wear his work. I'm also pretty sure his in-shop habits are up to official industry standards given the reputation of the shop. Sorry to repeat myself, but I'd expect him to pull out the gloves if I sat down at his station and I'm sure he would insist on it in that context (he seems to have said as much above). I just think he is putting himself at risk (which is his decision) and, like the Kat photo, not doing the industry any good by airing/defending the practice in public forums.

There are MANY things which go on BEHIND the scenes...all of which you TRUST the artist does, to make you safe. Now, when that person comes here and is stupid enough to defend not wearing gloves in an open forum, do you TRULY TRUST THAT PERSON WITH YOUR LIFE????

I have to agree that if I was choosing between 2 artist of similar talent...one defended tattooing without gloves and the other steadfastly insisting on gloves at all times, I would absolutely choose the one advocating gloves at all times. I agree with your position regarding trust and reputation in an artist by artist as well as industry basis. If I am ever fortunate enough to score an apprenticeship and work in the industry one day, I will be one of those no exception glove artists. I do clearly see the reasons for wearing them...don't see any possible upside to not wearing gloves...

Just the SLIGHTEST opening in the skin of that person's hand....a friggin ingrown fingernail....ANYTHING.....and they are sharing a desease with the person they are tattooing.

just a word on the glovless thing.....EVERYONE agrees that gloves should be worn. NO DOUBT. I remember a time when tattooist didnt wear gloves but the biggest concern in those days was getting your hands inked up, and of course hepitius. with everything oour industry and the medical field has learned about contaminates, bloodborn diseases, and cross contamination, to not use gloves is completely and utterly insane. I have a friend that spent some time in the state prison, he tattooed on the inside to make a buck, and even he would not tattoo unless he had gloves.

I don't really see how one person's mess up makes EVERYONE look bad. A kid got shot in a daycare a couple months ago...didn't make the daycare i worked at get any less business or get looked down on. Hell, they found weed in one of the kid's backpacks at one branch of our company, and it didn't do anything to the others...and that's in the same company. If lots of people didnt use gloves, i could see it making the whole group look bad (aka, MOST teenagers are stupid, so then ALL of them are concidered stupid...if 2 teenagers out of 100 act stupid, all 100 won't be concidered stupid...if 75 of the 100 acted stupid, they all would...), but just one?

I really appreciate everyone's input on this thread. I was planning on getting another tattoo and was doing searches for Tattoo studios in the Dallas area. The search results lead me to this website. I can thank TAZ specifically for helping me decide not to get another one. Reason why?? I guess it was the whole thing of not wearing gloves and that he wouldn't drop the issue. Reading this thread you hear about not wearing gloves, answering the phone with bloody hands, hepatitis, and some idiot having unprotected sex with lots of women (I think there were probably some MEN also!!) It just gives me the impression that getting a tattoo is still way too risky. And this is from someone that already has several of them. Can you imagine what a prospective first timer would be thinking if they came across this link. I don't think they would be ending up in anyone’s studio. I've been one Kat's website twice and remember seeing the picture, but never noticed her being gloveless until TAZ brought it up. I think the glove issue has gotten out of hand already. She is human and does make mistakes, and her being in the spot light makes her an easy target. Hopefully she'll realize that she's a star and needs to be a bit more careful.
On the other hand, i agree with Bob. She's not very talented and people go to her for tattoos because of who she is and not on her work. There are many many artists out there who are greater than she is and charge 3 times less than she does. But people want to be able to say that they got a tatt done by a 'celebrity'.

As far as Kat Von D not being the greatest artist anyone has ever seen, when did anyone except some internet bloggers ever claim that? Have you seen Guy Aicthison tattoos from 10 years ago? She's still young, and just got the spotlight early on. Besides, she's fucking hot, does good tattoos, and is helping portray tattooing to the public in a better light. Talk all the trash you want, but people that never would have gotten tattooed just a few years ago are taking the plunge now.

If you like getting tattooed by a clown then go for it...she does decent work...I only like her black and grey work though. The color stuff is off.

I am one of those that definitely does not love Kat. She's got the "my shit don't stink attitude" everyone who works with her or is around her for more than 10 minutes is usually disgusted by her. The only people who stick up for her are people who have never met her and are in love with her cause she's on t.v. Otherwise, people who have met her and still defend her have only met her for like 5 or ten minutes while she signs an autograph for them or something, so they're blind to any snob characteristics cause they are totally in love with her.

The artists do the show for the money, and the show is how it is because TLC makes it that way. It's corny as shit, but that's how TLC makes it. They dumb it down a lot for all the dumb people in the world to more easily get hooked to the show. Hence, thos dumb people come on here and defend Kat w/o ever having met her besides seeing edited material that makes her look like she's really nice on the show. It's not the artist's decision how the show goes though. If it was, I'm sure it would be a much better show.

There is no question Kat is an amazing artists. However, this is not 1979 and it is against all OSHA regulation's and common sense to not wear gloves. In fact, they should be "Nitrile" not "Latex" gloves but that is another subject. A humble statement from her would benefit this industry that this is not acceptable Universal or Standard precautions for the BBP practice and that all seeking tattoos should only be tattooed by an artist wearing gloves. End of story. What one does in private is their business but when you choice to be a public figure there is a greater responsibility to all. If any of you who are totally in love with Kat saw Miami Ink last night then you've seen first hand what I was talking about in my previous posts. For once, they let her act how she regularly acts with people. When her and Garver are speaking to OCC on the phone she gives those faces like she's above all that is being discussed and she has absolutely no sense of humor. Any reasonable person could tell the guys(OCC) were just joking around with them while they talked about what they wanted. Garver knew they were just playing around, but she's a snob, who's full of herself and thinks she's above any tattoo that's not a portrait and no one can joke with her cause she has better things to do like act like she's a rock star.

Like I've said several times before she's great at what she does, but she has personality issues. She's a little kid that's full of herself. She was fired months ago, but they are just now airing it. Last night's show started the ball rolling on getting rid of her on Miami Ink and changing the show a bit to make it less corny and more real. Soon...sooon.

Kat has a charm about her. She is truly a beautiful spirit. She redefines beauty. I was curious about her age and heritage and had to do some research. She is mixed...German and Argentinian I do believe. Whatever she is, it's a perfect blend for her. I actually think she would be plain without her tats and I would probably look past her. She definitely has chosen her art well and has used her body, her canvas to illustrate her thoughts and journey. I love tattoos but to be only 25 years of age and have that many tats? Wow, I couldn't do it. To be confident about your tattoo choice says a lot. That means you stand behind your decisions. I am kinda scary, I would probably use my body, my canvas sparingly so that I can record the journey ahead. But I suppose that is the beauty behind it all. She has taken some major risk and now owns her own shop!

About the "divorce" some of you mentioned that it is their private business, but I don't totally agree. She is in the spotlight, working on a television show, letting the audience meet her husband and enjoy them being loving. Now I start watching LA Ink and it just says "single" and I am confused. I watch Miami Ink, but obviously missed something important. I am not being nosey, but showing interest in the life that I have been following all this time. I choose to watch LA Ink b/c I like her work, her personality and seeing possible artwork that I might want to get. It makes me wonder what went wrong with them, who made the decision, is she ok with the decision or it will affect her during the new show? Why shouldn't a fan be interested in the real story from a Kat Von D website rather just rumors spreading around. I am hoping it gets mentioned in the show for her followers to know the real story.

I am glad that Kat came back to LA and opened her shop. I want a
tattoo but to chicken to get one I guess one day I will have the guts
and end up getting a tattoo. My husband tells me to go for it when
I'm ready and will come with me.

Hey Kat is back ....and now she has her Tattoo Shop and happy that she is now here in Los Angeles.... Since I started watching her on T.V. on TLC I really liked howshe works on tattoos. I've been wanting a tattoo for a while but to chicken to get one, I guess when i have the guts to get one i will make sure I'll take a trip to LA and have Kat Von D give me my tattoo..My husband told me to go for it and that he will take me to see her.

What flavor Kat is ... thats easy .... stale bread with a hint of cigarette smoke .

My two cents: I was a huge fan of Miami Ink because it's saposta be about the art and about the meanings behind the tattoos. Miami Ink did a fairy good job compared to their Inked counterpart, which would give you a glimpse of the tattoo being done then cut to the slutty receptionist and all the drama going on in a 'rock star' shop.
45 minutes of drama and 15 minutes of tattoos...maybe they should see if MTV will sponser then.

L.A. Ink was the worst disappointment. They had two full episodes before her shop was even open!! There were only like two tattoos even done! The rest was about Kat being 'single' and whoring it up with a bunch of chick tattoo artists who I'm sure the network hand picked for her. It's just all so fake and scripted, kinda sad really. Kat has some AMAZING talent...but in the end she's a sell out, just like all those people she claims to hate. It's called hypocrisy Kat.

haha i find this kinda funny... i was on here a few months ago and almost everyone was defending kat saying how great she was ect.. there was only like 2-3 other people on here who didn't like her. and now none likes her... just funny thats all!

I feel compelled to keep this thread going, now that its been going for over a year . Kats work is great to most of the population as LA & Miami Ink are the only Tattoo artist most of us get to see through television, unless you travel the worlds tattoo shops to view and compare other work. Or pay websites to view their work. As I read this thread I was waitng for Kat to come on and defend herself or appologise since her husband or ex and a handful of her friends have put there opinion in. But she hasnt so I feel a little dissapointed since I reached the bottom and no reply from her. So shame on you gloveless Kat!

Uhhhhh, ummmmm, uhhhhh-I'm like-the dude who does her hair(Kat Von Delicious snatch)-and I have to say that she never wears gloves when we fist each others asses, or some such nonsense. Okay, yeah, seriously though-she should be held responsible for this ignorant act-no matter who or what she thinks she is. Like has been said before on this forum-she made a mistake...but it was a big one that she needs to make some sort of atonement for. We are talking about serious health issues here and now-not something to be laughed off as something trivial. I have only just gotten into message boards and was surprised to see that u r still on about no glove tattooing yes it is wrong BUT how many times do even the best tattoo artists cut the glove accidentily? If this happens what is the difference glove or no glove .And Iwould also remind you all of the old saying "Tattooed people are not prejudice clean skins are.".If an Artist does good work and uses clean needles,autoclave,and extra sterilisation then that is all they can do.So stop bagging each other and support your tattooed community or the goverment will have their way outlawed INK.
