about how much should I expect to spend on a tattoo?

I want to get a small (probably ~4 inches) tattoo of a snake with a dragon's head eating its tail shaped like the symbol for infinity on the inside of my forearm. I have a picture of a dragon's head that I really like and is fairly simple to draw (I'm rather bad at drawing and I can sketch it reasonably well).

About how much I should expect to pay for an artist to tattoo something this size? The only answer I've been able to find so far is "it depends on the quality of the work", but I would really like to have at least a general idea of the price before I start looking around.

Thanks a ton.

Its nearly impossible to price out a tattoo online. I would say $250-$450 for a quality tattoo of a snake in an infinity type pattern. It really depends on the artist and the final size of the tattoo. Remember, the more detail you want in your tattoo, the larger it has to be. Also remember not to shop by price. There are some great artists in your neck of the woods, where in VA are you?

I go to school at Virginia Tech, which is ~45-60 minutes west of Roanoke.

I'm not really looking for a price as much as I'm trying to get a general idea of how much it's going to cost me. (I promise I won't haggle with the artist and say how I met some guy on the interenet who said he would do it for $X lol). I also found the picture I want it to look similar to on the net so you can get a better idea of what im thinking of.

To those of you who recognize the card: yes, I am a complete nerd for playing that game.

I've always wanted to get a small tattoo, but I never really had any good ideas of something I wouldn't loathe when I got older until just recently. I'm turning 20 within the next month, so hopefully the cost won't be too much of an issue if I can convince my parents that I'm not an idiot for wanting one.

On a side note, I heard from a rather unreliable friend that it's illegal to get tattoos done on the inside of your wrist within the states due to the veins being close to the surface of the skin. Is this true, and will there be any limit as to where exactly on the inside of my forearm I can have this tattoo done? I plan on having an art major I'm friends with sketch it on my arm so I can walk around with it for a week or so just to make sure this isn't just another bad idea.

Dunno about the price deal, however, pertaining to the inner wrist deal being illegal in the US, I have heard the same thing..... but, that doesn't mean I haven't seen about a million people with tattoos on their wrists, in fact one of my best friends has one there, so who knows.

Im not sure about your state, but i seriously doubt wrist tattoos are illegal. Many tattoo artists will not tattoo someones neck, hands, or feet until you are heavily tattooed, but if you have a good head on your shoulders and are sure of what you want, your tattoo artist will probably do it. I also played magic for years, and dragons are a timeless tattoo. I dont know how small you can really go with that tattoo, though, thats for you to work out with the artist. I will tell you, though, that if you are making the plunge to get a tattoo on your forearm, make it large enough to be a good tattoo. Many people want to go as small as possible and that ruins plenty of otherwise good tattoos. Your hardest task will be to find a great artist to do the tattoo. I know folks in richmond (and theres a big conventiontion there 2x a year) and on the coast.

I wanted to get one somewhere where people would actually see it, but sadly most of society doesn't appreciate body art -_-

Ahh well, the rest of the details would probably be best to work out with an artist in my area. Thanks again to everyone who emailed me with shops to look into!
