Tattoo artists won't help me fix a bad tattoo?

Posted by Aero from IP: 216.102.92.25 on 02/22/08

Hi All,

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and got my first tattoo a few weeks ago. It's mostly done and I need to go back for the rest...

but - it's obvious that the artist didn't do a very good job of applying it for me so far. It's not horrific, but he missed some simple things like getting certain lines to be straight, and pressing too hard on some of the lines which made them look blotchy. All in all, he didn't ask very many questions and kinda "phoned it in".

I don't want to go back to that artist for completion, but it's been hard to find other artists' who will help me finish the work. Another local artist that I wanted to use for another tattoo said "We'll give you a new tattoo, but we're artists and don't work on other people's work"...

What can I do? I just want to get good work and am fully willing to pay for it. It's a real bummer honestly.

Is there anyone really good with a light hand that would be willing to do my shading?

Thanks for any advice,
-Dee

Dee,

Did the artists you saw afterwards tell you the work was terible, or is this just your opinion? Sometimes the artist has a completed vision in his mind and you may not see that outcome till the piece is finished. It may be so terrible, no one wants to work on it and put their name to it. How large is the piece?

It's hard to say without knowing what the tattoo is, but like the comment above me said, lots of artists don't want to finish a piece thats crappy. However, covering it up and sorta starting over is a good option sometimes too.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the response... Appreciate the attention!

This piece is about 4inches by 4inches on my inner bicep. It's a Zia sun symbol, orange/red/yellow in the center and linework for the rest. Nothing Earth shattering, but I love the symbol and the look :-)

I've gotten feedback from two other artists, and a couple of tattoo'd friends, who looked at the piece and said it was "Ok", but pointed out a lot of flaws that I've also noted. Lines that don't touch, pressing too hard thus making poor lines... also, the original artist didn't really explain anything to me - he was in a rush, and I was too much of a newby to walk away. The works isn't horrific at all - it's just not that great... It only needs to be shaded at this point, and I don't have faith that the original artist will do a good job anymore. Why go back? This is permanent! I'm at a state where it could totally be salvaged by someone better (so I've been told).

So, I have a partially done tattoo and the "better" artists seem not to be interested. They are busy with lots of other people and don't want to pick up the pieces of a lesser artist.

It feels kinda like I'm being punished for not knowing who was the "best" for my first tattoo. Even though I did a great amount of research, looked at books and picked this artist based on his straight lines, recommendations of other people he's done etc - this one "off day" has left me in a bad spot.

I'd want another tattoo as well - so any new artist I worked with will get my future business too! I know that good tattoo artists are booked and super busy - but I'm bummed.

All the best,
-Dee

Keep shopping around...Nor Cals got some good artists...Ck out Nu skule, or Marks of Art in San Jose, FU tattoo in Santa Cruz, or if you want someone who's a hidden Gem, and you can drive Joe(Owner) of Bad Boy Body Graffix in Coyote(It's between san Jose and Morgan hill), I know him well and he'll do a good job over someone's shotty work! He's been in the business over 20 years!

Awesome, will do - thank you !

Just out of curiosity, have you ever heard anything about Kahlil at Ed Hardy's shop? His portfolio is wicked amazing and he's booked out until august... it's a long time to wait, but I'm patient if it's worth it? Thanks for the the tips.

Yes, his tattoos are done very well, if I remember correctly he has a lot of japanese influences in his art.

Not to sound offensive, but a Zia sun symbol on the inner bicep is not that complicated of a tattoo...I imagine your tattoo design is more intricate than the standard design; however, I am not sure whether Kahlil would work on someone else's work, and on such a small piece. If he's willing to do it, and you're willing to wait, my suggestion would be do what will make you happy.

Joe is an old school tattoo artist, you won't find his shit on the internet, and when you come in his shop you won't see any of the artists' portfolios sitting on the counter. His business is done through word of mouth only.

Good luck
