Really. Instead of taking the time to answer questions that you think are irrevelant, why don't you take the time to say something constructive. There is no need for all this rudeness when someone asks a simple question.

I don't think I was rude at all........this person has asked this before.
Of course it hurts, needles going into you a million times is going to,anyplace on your body. Some more than others?I'd say yes.I have no tats on my ribs yet,but have to assume it might be a more painful area than others.I look at it like this,if it's somewhere ticklish it'll be more uncomfortable. As for fucking myself,if I could I wouldn't be wasting my time on this response.I'd be making a movie and planing my life of fame and fortune.Mabey even a cameo on Miami or LA Ink.
Have a great day!

i got 15 hours basically on my whole side, ribs and hip. i would say the hip is the worst, not a lot of muscle or flab so its right on the bone. the ribs are actually ok, the closer you get to the underarm and out towards your pectoral muscle the skin is more sensitive, so it hurts a lot worse. i did 3 - three to four hour sessions and one - 5 hour session. the first twenty minutes are brutal, then the next two hours are great. i really enjoyed parts of it, the endorphines kick in and life is great. i would say 3 hours is perfect for that spot on the body. after 3 hours i wasn't having any fun, but made it out alive. i just gets tough to hold still and you really need to for things like that, especially since you are breathing and its right there. overall its a great place for a tattoo, and i love mine to death. the experience was great and i would say the whole myth of unbearable pain on the ribs is a lie.

its not really anything you can compare it to, its kind of like tons and tons of needles going in and out of your skin at a very high rate. if you can; get the outline done in one session and the shading done in another. when you keep going back over the same area it sucks bad.

bottom line, pain is different for everyone. everything i just wrote could be completely different for someone else. if you want it bad enough, do it. my side doesn't hurt anymore and i have a great piece of art on me forever.

I have a rib piece (4 hour sitting) and the three worst spots for me were by my hips, (but I also have stretch marks there) I bruised up pretty bad afterward, then a few inches above where my elbow rests on my side, and near my stomach.

Ribs suck. I have a piece that runs from bra-line down on and across my hip... about 18 inches in length -- I'm tall. Front of the ribs sucks the worst, back of the ribs isn't bad, but the stomach/hip area is not fun either. I've got 11 hours so far in 2 sessions; my next and final one will be anywhere from 3.5-5.5 hours.

A 3 hour sitting sounds absolutely fantastic to me in light of what I've sat through so far...

I have a fist sized tattoo on the center of the side of my rib cage. It took about an hour and a half. The first 20 minutes, like said by others, was the most painful part. I got a bit jumpy, which is not good, but after that initial 20 minutes I would compare it to being on a sort of sedative. You're still wide awake but the pain level drops dramatically as the endorphine's kick in.

I'm not a fan of pain (who is), but there was not a tear shed during this experience.

You'll do fine!

To describe the pain of getting tattooed on the ribs, I would say something like this:
It feels like a cross between being cut and being set on fire.

Before I got my rib tattoo a friend of mine compared it to someone drawing on you with a thick piece of broken glass. Afterwards, i'm going to have to stick with that comparison. For me it was very painful. The artist that did it, advised me not to get it there due to the pain. He said he was tattooed from head to toe, except two spots. Can you guess? Yep, both sides are bare haha.

But yeah for me it was pretty bad, but it could change for anyone.

rib tattoos dont hurt nearly as bad as people claim. im 18 and i just got a 11 by 4 tattoo going from my lat down my ribs to my abs.its my first tattoo and im sure ill have more in the near future. the outline didnt feel like anything and the only rough part was when he (Dan at rockstar tattoo, St. Charles MO) colored a solid black H for about 20 minutes. the whole expiriance took 2 and a half hours and i would recomend just getting a tat on ur ribs and dont worry about the pain. its not as bad as everyone says.

I understand how you feel. I'm planning to get a tattoo on my ribs soon. I have one tattoo on my lower back, and I'm going to see the same guy about one on my ribs in a couple days. Everyone told me before I got my first one that it was going to be so painful. It was really uncomfortable at times, but it wasn't all that bad. The ribs may be worse, but I wouldn't let people scare me. If it would make you feel better, take someone with you that can distract you.

*As a sidenote: I want my side piece to go from my braline to my hip. Some people have suggested this might look bad with the one on my lower back. I dont thik so, but I would love other opinions.

Alright. here's my professional opinion and my personal opinion.

Professional:
I've tattooed girls that giggle when i put the needle in and sit perfectly still for hours, and i've tattooed grown men who had to take a "pee break" every ten minutes. Just like every other tattoo, its all you.

Personal:
I have a squirt gun on my right hip that took about three hours, and it was probably the worst three hours of my life. i have tattoos all over my arms, legs, and back, i've even tattooed myself. I can assure you, my hip hurt. a lot. but in the end, i did it, and if i can, you can.

Seriously, if you're worried about it hurting, stop being a pussy. just do it.

I got my ribs done 2 days ago. I just got my sons name across so it only took about an hour. It did hurt a lot but it was never unbearable. I think I liped some swear words a few times but that was about it. I do have one other tat but it's small. I really wanted it and so I did it. The pain is bad but like I said it's not unbearable. Go for it!!

...however a mate of mine (small girl who's only just turned 18) managed to sit through several sessions gettin her side covered with a pirate ship so if I can't do this...well...you know...pussy haha If she can do it I can do it!

Well, tattoos are going to feel different for everyone, the only way to really tell how it's going to feel is to go get it done yourself. I just turned 18 and I'm a 110 lb. chick, and I'm a pansy when it comes to pain, but I went about 2-3 weeks ago and got stars all the way up my rib cage, and I could barely feel it, and what I did feel didn't really hurt, it just kinda felt irritating. I'll tell you what it felt like for me, but that doesn't mean it would feel the same for you. To me it felt like someone had a piece of glass and they were dragging it over my skin, but I make it sound worse than it feels, it doesn't hurt, it feels annoying. I've heard of guys who tried to get rib tats and couldnt finish them, but then again my tattoo artist told me his buddy's a pansy too and he handled a rib tattoo just fine, so you can't really base anything off of what other people say, you'd have to find out on your own.

I just got a rib piece yesterday, and it definitely hurt more than my other tattoo which is located on the right side of my lower back. It was a very intense cutting/pinching feeling with burning. I did fine though, and I hate pain. Honestly, if you want a rib tattoo, do it. The pain is worth the beautiful outcome. =)

You can't really rely on other peoples experiences to try to figure out how much it will hurt. I got a little nervous about it but it was fine. It did hurt but it was WELL worth it! I listened to my Ipod the whole time and that calmed me down a bit and took my mind off it.

i had a 4 hour session on my side..its hard to compare it to anything else. ive heard others say it just feels annoying or like a "hot scratching" but thats not what i felt. it definantly hurt. but it was bareable and i got through it! origionaly i was suppose to do it in 2 sessions (out line then shadding) but decided to get it all over with at once. i found the outline to be most painful because you are more sensitive in different areas and are getting use to the feeling of it. i recomend doing it all at once if you can. by the time he started the shading the endorphings had really kicked in and at that point it really was more annoying than painful. for me lower stomach was worse than ribs.but everyones different. just do it, you wont regret it. the pain is only temperary and you will have a beautiful tatt to show for it when ita over :)

Don't be scared....the ribs are fine. The lower it goes on rib cage it hurt a bit more....the abs or hip might hurt, but not the ribs. Go for it! You'll be fine. 26/M

I just got an 1 and 1/2 hour piece done on the left side of my ribs from my arm pit straight down to my hip. It's 9 ancient Chinese symbols. I'll be honest, at first it hurt, but after while, the pain was more than tolerable. If you have your heart set on getting a tattoo on your ribs the pain should not be a deterrent. This was my first tattoo, and when I was making the appointment, the tattoo artist tried to convince me to get it elsewhere because he thought I wouldn't be able to tolerate the pain; he was wrong. If you're excited about your piece and you've put enough thought into, you will be fine I promise.

Okay, so i had read every site imaginable when i wanted to get my rib tattoo && the truth is, everyone is different . litereally . I have two tattoos proior for going and getting my rib tattoo . I didn't really feel like it bothered me the first two times i went but when i was reading some of the messages people posted about their expierence i had myself in a whirlwind of worry . It came to my birthday and i went for my tattoo . To be honest, it didn't bother me at all . I actually enjoyed the pain that came with it, even thought it was a dull pain . Certain lines were getting a bit painful but they were closer to my back .. I am a small girl .. 5'2 and 105 pounds, so i don't have much meat on my bones -- as some would say .. it really isn't that bad .. or i thought . my tattoo artist told me that he couldn't sit for more than 10 mintues when he was getting his ribs worked on . i was there about 2 hours to have mine totally finished && it was definatly worth it .

but don't get yourself worked up over the things you read, it all depends on how you take things .. so if you want a rib tattoo, just go for it and don't worry about the pain . it's only temporary, and the tattoo will be forever! .

i just got an armpit to hip tattoo started the other day and let me tell you... that sh** hurt more then anything i ve ever felt. i have a half sleeve that runs to to my neck, kanji all the way across my back, and a chest tattoo, none can even compare to the ribs. i never said to stop, but i deff thought about it a few time. made a lot of funny faces and clenched my fists a lot. as said before, the stomach, the soft spot above the groin, and the part between the armpit and nipple hurt the worst.
my tattoo artist text me the next morning and said he was impressed that i made it through the sitting, that he would have done it in 2, but i never said to stop so he just kept going.
and breaks help in my opinion. just me

I just got a full side piece. 11x4 inches and it was not bad at all. My 3 hours piece in the inner bicep was much worse. My artist was surprised, but obviously it's different for everyone. by the armpit hurt pretty bad and down by the hip wasn't great either. But if the pain is holding you back I wouldn't dwell on it much. Just take ceep breaths and don't clench your muscles.

I got my first tattoo on my ribs, it is about 10 x 2 in. It took about an hour and goes straight down my side. I was anticipating a whole lot of pain, but right when the needle went in, i realized that it wasn't shit. I am in the middle of having a side/rib piece done. My left side. It's a pretty big space scene of Saturn.
Honestly...probably the worst pain I've ever had in my life.
About seven hours into it now.
The first session I sat for three and a half hours, the second session was two hours and the third one was an hour and a half. Part of it was probably that I was psyching myself out. But, I told my tattoo guy that the only way the piece is going to get finished is if we do one-hour sessions at a time. Because, I really can't tolerate any more than that.
The most painful parts for me are over the actual rib-bone, and the very fatty areas (love handles). And the color does not hurt as much as the line work. The line work feels like a razor blade, in my opinion and I insist on taking a break every ten or fifteen minutes!
But...what are you gonna do? Can't walk around with a half-finished tattoo!

Lol. How can you compare such a sensation? As a person who has a rib tattoo, I will say that this is a very sensitive area of the body so it is definitely painful and by far was the most painful tattoo that I ever got. However, if this is something you want then go for it. Pain is only temporary my friend. And if you are a guy asking this question my advice for you is to man up and take the pain. And don't take any breaks while getting it done just be a soldier and troop it out.

Just got a rib tattoo. It took about 4 hrs to do and by the end I had to use every bit of energy in me to stop myself from saying I needed to stop. The lining was ok, a bit painful, but the shading is what killed me.. It was really ok in certain areas, but others was pretty bad. However, it was bearable and damn worth it. I got really sore by the end but I am super happy with it

I got a rib tattoo done two weeks ago....I got some lettering tattooed right accross my upper right ribs in a really detailed font. It was my first tattoo, and I can honestly say when it comes to pain, I have a pretty high tolerance. I asked the artist to do a dry line first (no ink). I was relieved that it didn't hurt as bad as i thought....everyone had told me all these horror stories about how much it would hurt to tattoo over bone (im pretty skinny my ribs stick out a lot). Honestly, the pain was somewhat like getting stung by a bee....its really not a big deal at all tho, the tat took an hour and a half....the only painful part was when he was doing the letters near my sternum, because thats a pretty sensitive area. The tattoo was no big deal at all...I don't consider them to be painful, just uncomfortable because of the whiping of the ink. When he wiped the ink it was the worst part because the skin feels like a sunburn. For 2 days after getting it, it felt like sunburn. A week and a half later it was completely healed. I love my tattoo I would get a rib tattoo again, in a heartbeat.

Hey there,
I just got my first tattoo today on my ribs! This was my first tattoo so I wasn't sure of the pain level but I went in thinking it was going to be killer pain. I found that the outline of my tat hurt a lot less than the shadeing.. at times it hurt but to tell you the truth while getting it done I was laughing and talking and at one point I could have fallen asleep I felt so relaxed and after the first few stabs with the needle it didn't hurt at all.. I love my new tattoo it looks all new and fresh right and it is covered in the tape and plastic now but in a couple days it will be incredible! Yes, it hurts and yes I have a high pain tolerence but for my first tattoo in one of the many worst areas the artist and I both were in shock at how good I did. He was surprised I could stay so still! So just got for it and expect the worst and you might not find it bad like it did.

i got my first tattoo on my side ribs a few days ago. it did not hurt much at all! everyone was telling me how bad it would hurt even the tattoo artist said thats not the best place to have the first one. it all depends on your pain tolerance and mental strength. it felt like a cat scratching. the pain was only initial and it did not hurt afterwards. the ribs closer to the front was the worst part. if you want it there get it it's worth it.

I got a tattoo over my ribs a few months ago. It was my first tattoo so I didn't know what to expect. I had read a ton of blogs and stuff about how bad they were and how much they hurt, so I was naturally really nervous. I was most nervous for the first time the needles would go into my skin because I had absolutly no idea what to expect. I had read that it can be so painful that people jump from pain and it ruins the tattoo, and that the needles vibrate your ribs and make it impossible to sit still. I was convinced that I was going to move uncontrollably and my tattoo would be ruined. All of this worrying was so useless becasuse nothing like this happened. It did hurt, don't all tattoos though? I did feel like my ribs were vibrating at times, but nothing incredibly bad. The more painful spots were in the middle of my side towards the bottom of my rib cage. That hurt way more than higher up under my armpit. I was never in so much pain that I wanted to stop or die, granted my tattoo is more of a simple design and there is no shading or color in itt, but ti is big though.

just got my first tatt and its on my ribs.some parts of the outline felt like they were being done with a blunt razor n hurt like hell but other bits hardly hurt at all. the shading was not as intense as the outline but it takes way longer so there is still pain to deal with. at the end of the day though i got a tattoo not a massage, it looks sick and well worth the pain. now i need a design for my other side

im a massive woos! and i was ****ing myself for about a month before i got the tattoo on my ribs coz i read so many of those websites about the pain! i already had a tattoo on my hip which was ok. only took half an hour, but when i finally got the guts 2 go in and get it it really wanst that bad,in fact i got it done, got up and looked at it and layed back down to get more doone. in short, its bareable. and definately worth it! something to compare it to...it feels like when ur sunburnt and somebody scratches you. and you can feel the bone rattle a bit when the neeedle goes over it, as i said im a woos and it was actually kinda relaxing afterwards u feel heaps tough haha.
my boyfriend and friend came with me and talked 2 me through it made it better =] and i definately want more. DO It for sure.

i just got ink on my ribs, right below my boob and it absolutely hurt, but it was totally worth it! Just take deep breaths while the artist is getting more ink, suck on some candy to distract you, and drink water periodically. Go home after and drink a beer and get some sleep. Go for it girl!

just had five hours on my ribs, outline yesterday 3 hours and two hours shading today, the piece goes from my armpit to my waist. to be blunt the pain aint nice. the shading today was the worst, probably worse for me considering i had the outline done only yesterday. i would say it feels like being cut open whilst on fire in certain areas. but obviously it all depends on what your having done and how big the piece is. i have alot of vibrant colours that require shading over the same area constant, which isnt nice. id have to say when the artist has to wipe any ink away or clean the skin, that burns like a bitch for me. but if you try and use mind over matter u will be ok. it actually helps sometimes to concentrate on the pain and take it in, sounds strange but it helps, sometime people distracting u or making u laugh can be worse. so switch off take in the pain and give it a blast. only 3hours left for me

My first tattoo was a small piece of my rib cage. The session was about an hour long. The outline is by far the worst part, but once you get into the shading the pain is not nearly as bad. In the end though, the pain is well worth it. Seeing how sick it looks and knowing that the proccess is over, you'll realize that it was worth it. Remember, it's not going to kill you, go in there with a positive mind set and you'll get through. The more you read and think about how bad the pain is, the worst it will be. Don't psych yourself out before you get there. good luck to all.

I am in the middle of my 1st tattoo. It starts at my left shoulder and wraps around my entire torso. It is the lyrics and music notes to the song my fiance dedicated to me. From my personal experience, my spine was the worst then my sternem I think is what it is called right there where you do chest compressions for CPR. Then my ribs. I am a little 5'2" 120lbs girl and it really was not that bad and I usually pass out when getting my blood drawn or piercings. It was suprisingly relaxing. I am only a third of the way done and am worried about my stomach I heard that is very painful.

Just got a small tattoo on my ribs last week - about 4x4 inches - nothing too big or intense, all black. Was my first tattoo and I was scared about the level of pain but when it came down to it I knew I really wanted it there and so I decided to go through with it. So glad I did because 1) i absolutely love it and 2) it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Granted, it took less than an hour, but the pain was really more annoying than anything - it wasn't anything I couldn't handle, and I don't do too well with pain.

The pain is going to be different for every person. I made sure I breathed in between when the artist when to dip for more ink and just put myself in a good place mentally. When it comes down to it, if you really want it there, you'll get it, no matter how it feels. So glad I went through with it. The pain is only temporary and the result lasts forever. SO happy I went through with it.

i got my first tattoo on my right rib. it's a swallow, about the size of my hand. right on the bra line. it hurt really bad, to the point where i couldn't stop shaking, but i didn't cry at all. the hard part is when my artist was telling me to control my breathing and to not shake because it was going to fuck up the piece, but it was involuntary. i mean, yeah, it depends from person to person...for me, it hurt extremely bad, but it was over eventually and it looks bad ass. it also depends on your body type. if you're heavier and have more "cushion" there, it probably wouldn't hurt as bad as if you just had skin and bones (like me). that's just my two cents. personally, i think it's totally worth it. i think it's just important to expect the worst going into it. if you want it bad enough, it the pain won't matter.

ok, i'm on my gap year and i've always wanted a tattoo with music... im 18 and finally got this tattoo done... its about the size of a large hand on the side of my ribs just under my bra line...

it has a lot of intricate details and shading... it took only 30 minutes...

but i gotta tell u... i have a high pain threshold... and the guy designing the tat said "haha, its the most painful spot..." so naturally i asked for the numbing gel coz im a pussy like that...

the tattooist and designer BOTH refused to use it on me... so im sitting in the chair and he's just laughing at me... bastard. anyway, the pain...

ive never gritted my teeth as hard as ive ever gritted them in there... i made sounds i never knew i could make because the pain is indescribable... like, when he moved to a fleshier part of skin it felt GOOD like it was enjoyable... but you knew he was moving back up there... and the feeling of not knowing how much longer to go was the worst... but it was done and i looked in the mirror... sweat was coming from my forehead and my eyeliner was everywhere... i looked ridiculous... but the feeling afterwards was amazing and worth it 100%... i would never get a tat there again, but i would def get one again...

All of you who say that a tattoo on your side hurts like getting cut and set on fire is either insane or just weak. I decided to get my first on my ribs and upon doing research stumbled upon this blog which scared me shitless. I thought I was going to die based upon the descriptions in this blog. I got three birds one on my upper rib one in the middle front and one on my side torso. I only had to grimace about three times and it was for a short period of time. If you want to know what it feels like...scratch yourself on the ribs with your fingernail hard enough for it to leave a mark....and thats it. Dont let the pain change your mind because it really doesnt hurt. Maybe I have a high pain tolerance but it wasnt bad.

However my girlfriend got her third tattoo on her ribs and decided on one that had a lot of detail. The tattoo artist, who is also our friend, had to use a smaller needle than the one she used on me and my girlfriend seemed to experience a lot more pain than I did. Either way at the end of the day we both walked away extremely happy...feeling on top of the world and with no regret

All the feedback seems to state it's fucking painful.
But hey, how much of a fucking nice spot is it to get one?
I know it's going to look hot as shit when it's done.

Man, I don't know what is with the "the first 20 minutes is the worst". I thought that was the easiest. I just finished a 3.5 hour session on my ribs/stomach. Around the half hour mark I was over it. The shading was the absolute worst, especially the border. The border of my portrait tattoo was along my bra line and that was the worst part, I could hardly sit still and just wanted to say "fuck it." I have one more session and I'm done, I got to say, I'm not looking forward to it - although my tattoo looks great and I know it will be worth it ! oh and also, whoever said that shading is the less painful part is wrong, so many people told me that and boy were they wrong. I much rather preferred the outline over shading.

Getting inked on the ribs is like being drawn on with a red hot darning needle - multiplied by 9 or 10. not fun. Having said that I am tattooed over much of my body and I have nine small tats on my rib cage, 4 on the left side, five on the right. I'm glad they were small. I don't think I could have sat through a long session. You live and learn they say. I just live. Any way, each of the tattoos has deep meaning for me, and they look great
