Large Calf Tattoo Impeding Use of Leg

Posted by Con Dientes from IP: 67.164.117.104 on 03/29/07
San Francisco, California, USA

This past Saturday, I got a fairly large piece on my right calf. Pretty much takes up the whole length and width of my calf. The tattoo itself is healing well, it is about five days old and is starting to crack and flake off. I am dry-healing it because my artist said to use A&D which made it all mushy and disgusting. The problem is with the rest of my lower leg. The entire thing is swollen, including my ankle and foot. It is really painful to be standing for a long time, and I put most of my weight on my other leg when there's absolutely nowhere to sit. I have had my artist look at it, she said it looked infected, but it wasn't anything to worry about. She gave me Provon medicated soap with 0.3% Chloroxylenol. I have been washing it twice daily since I saw her on Tuesday. I have also been keeping it elevated on pillows when I sleep. The swelling goes down overnight, but comes right back as soon as I have to get up and put weight on it. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, but all this not being able to stay standing for long periods, and limping around is getting really depressing. I am just wondering how typical/atypical this is with the calf area, how long this should go on, and if I am doing all the right things to care for it pre-doctor appointment. Any other comments would also be appreciated. Thanksamillion! =)

Best thing to do is see a Dr. That way all doubts will cease and oral antibiotics will take immediate action. The least of walkin you can do...And keep you leg at a higher level than your body (pillows) when laying down...Best of luck! PEACE RASTA! The Cool-Ruler

If your tattoo was done in a licensed inspevted shop your worries about a deadly disease is probably way off base, however no matter how goos and clean the shop is , when you walk out the door with a fresh tattoo you can quite easily be infected by a million different things if you are not vareful.

I suggest that you don't wait, go to the doctor.

I had the same problem with a calve tattoo, and the problem is that dry healing is not always a good option, specially when the tattoo is heavy colored.
What happen is that as soon as you start scabbing, and you put pressure on your leg you'll make the calve muscle to expand provoking the scab to pull the skin tissue.
This action will make your body to start pouring plasma under the scab, producing an even thicker scab that will result into more pain when walking or standing.

I am not a DR, just a simple tattoo artist that got a Calve tattoo and erroneously performed a dry healing. Never again, dry healing may work for line work and lightly shaded tattoos, but when there is a good bang on the skin stick to thin layers of A&D,
or if you can "cream for cow tits" (I never remember the proper name of it)

Most likely you have nothing but a leg-ache but don't hesitate and go see a Dr. They may put you under antibiotics and some mild pain killer like ibuprophen.

I had an ankle tattoo about 6 years ago and it never swelled, nor was as painful as you described. I am glad you are going to the doctor because it sounds like a definite infection. I just got another tattoo on my lower back about 1 week ago and it is also healing beautifully. I used polysporin 4x day for 3 days and am now using Aveeno lotion 2-3x day for 4 days. There was mild itching day 4 and 5. There was never any scabbing nor oozing. The tattoo is now starting to flake off on its own. I am making sure to keep the tattoo moisturized but not wet (just like you would treat the rest of your body when it is dry- you moisturize, when it is not-leave it alone). I was told if I get a scab and it oozes, it was from putting too much lotion/ointment on. If the scab is dry, moisturize it. If the scab is wet, leave it alone. Tattoos need moisturing to heal but too much will plug the pores and seep. I had 2 different tattoo artists and I used the same ointment and lotion both times. One thing both artists told me was to never use vaseline.

I realise this won't help the original poster as one would hope the issue has been long resolved but for anyone new. I have had extensive work done on my calf (basically from my ankle up to behind my knee) and yes my ankle swelled up. It looked like a "cankle". As you have just created a large wound on your body, edema is fairly normal. To what extent depends on the person. Infection is always a factor but if your infection gets to that stage that quickly there's a bigger problem. Not only that your tattoo would not be healing well. For those who wondered timelines (in my case) I finished saturday evening by sunday evening there was a fair bit of swelling and throbbing etc and Monday was by far the worst day for swelling but my tattoo skin was already healing well. Tuesday night there was still some swelling but not too bad ( I bandaged myself up and played soccer if that's any indicator). Today...wednesday very little swelling. However, I'm in good health and active so these things could help speed up recovery. For all tattoos I've used polysporin triple (or the generic -read the labels and compare) and apply roughly 3 times a day. BUT, you know your body and you know deep down if something is really wrong..be smart about it
Enjoy your new tattoos everyone!!!!

im a professional tattoo artist out of Louisiana. I work at year of the monkey. We recently had another professional artist from new york do a guest spot at our shop who gave both me and my fiancee calf tattoos. mine is much larger than hers and yet both of ours are equally swollen and irritated. at first i thought it was just normal for the placement however i did a cover up one of my fiancees friends calfs. it was a large piece in the same area that didnt swell and was not irritated at all. from start to finish the tattoo healed extremely well. even though swelling for her is normal due to the fact she has fibromyalgia. i guess what im trying to say it depends on who does it and the methods that individual artist uses. any one who gets a tattoo that they think is not healing right consult your (professional) tattoo artist first, then see a doctor if symptoms persist. if its your "home boy", an apprentice, or just some scumbag scratcher, (why you would let them tattoo on you who fucking knows) just go straight to the doctor.

Nuuuuuu I have both legs covered and when i dry healed my right eg the exact same thing happened its just from the dry healing dont worry its completely normal its swells excessively and the pains due to the poor circulation of the legs :] my entire leg was swelled for 9 days and everyone thought i had an infection but it was only becasue im a stubborn teenager and i hate gooey stuff all over my tattoos i only goo it the first two days then i let it dry heal but i never dry healed a leg tattoo again after that other body parts with the exception of the elbow should be fine wiht the dry healing i have my arms, back, neck, and both legs and all were dry healed except the left leg :p

I just had a calf tattoo on my right calf Jan. 13th of this year. http://chikkenscratch.com/artwork/1159667_50cc.html I went through the same pain you did. I had severe knotting calf muscle that I had to constantly walk off when I was on my feet. My foot & and ankle too also swelled up when I was on my feet. It too 3 weeks for the pain to stop, and about 4 weeks for the swelling to stop. I tried to stay off of my feet as much as I could, but that was pretty much impossible with my job.

I just got a tattoo on my calf done as well. It also gets gooey whenever I shower or put lotion or a&d on it. I think that I am just going to dry heal it. I also get pain whenever I put pressure on that leg. Its like pricklys underneath my tattoo. I don't know what to do because it is a fairly big piece and its been done in a couple of sessions but the parts that are solid color are the parts that don't want to heal correctly. The first part that I had colored in was only a couple stars that were about one inch and they got gooey then my sock that I had to wear because of work, ripped two of my stars off leaving huge craters right in the middle. The second part I had colored was the hummingbird on my calf and only parts of it gooed up. I tried to pat it dry with a paper towel and that ripped part of the tattoo off as well, leaving a huge crater in it. Now I just had the lily part of my tattoo filled in finally and it pretty much started to do the same thing so I am dry healing it to see how this works. It also takes forever to dry after the shower or after I wash it off. I don't really know how to handle it.
Any one have any great advice? I've tried A&D ointment, Neosporin and unscented lotion that the tattoo artist recommends. I've seen the work that this artist has done on numerous of my friends and mine is the only one that heals all funny. please help

This is amazing to read! I too just got a tattoo that is just below my knee and circles around my lower leg. It is now day 7 after tattoo.. My leg started aching deep inside on the 2nd day. The 3rd day.. I found it hard to walk and put all my weight on the other leg most all of day 3,4,and 5. The skin itself where the tattoo is.. is slightly tender. My muscle in my leg doesn't hurt. All I can say is on day 2 and 3 it felt like I had a constant "flu" pain... like someone was driving a rod down the inside of my bone in my leg. My leg has been swollen from the knee down since day 3 and there are parts of my tattoo that are still swollen and red. My tattoo was drawn on my leg with a red permanent marker, and there is also a lot of blue and purple used in the tattoo area which is still red on day 7. I have made up my mind, after reading this, and after feeling sick to my stomach on day 5, and dizzy on day 6, and now both legs are swelling... I am finally going to the doctor!!! I am pretty sure that my "good" leg is swelling just from over-using it. The pain down the inside of my leg is no longer there on day 7. This is my first tattoo, so I really have nothing to "compare" it to, and reading all of these messages really helped influence my decision to go to the doctor!! Thanks to all!! I will be back to post results.

6 days ago I had a coverup on my right outside calf. Covers the whole calf and we did it in one sitting, 5 hours.

Symptoms:
vomiting
nausea
fatigue
chills
painful to the slightest touch
painful to stand or walk
heavy oozing and scabbing from the yellow color
heavy swelling from the yellow color
redness and a hot feeling developed around tattoo on day 5

The pain was considerable and nearly impossible to walk without a cane. Yesterday I noticed that redness was spreading around the perimeter of the tattoo so I called my doctor. He called in 3 prescriptions for me because it sounded like an infection had set in. The ointment I got was Mupirocin and it's for a staph infection, cost $35. After one application the puffiness was nearly all gone. The pain is still there but subsides after I walk around a bit. I had another tattoo done by the same artist a day before and it is healing normal. It's just one of those things, but when in doubt it is always best to ask a doctor.

Hey so I just read this thread and I too a week ago had my whole lower leg tattooed. all the way around and it swelled up like a bitch.
The scab has almost all come off and it is healing nicely so far.. i just found that putting leg up of an evening and trying to stay off it during the day was the trick. I also found that by putting a tight sock over my foot and doing shoe up reasonably tight i was able to walk around no dramas..
it was when i took the shoe and sock off that my foot blew up like a balloon.
I also had the weeping which a doctor told me is the fluid in your leg from the swelling having nowhere to go but out thru your tattoo..
its day 8 now and I am still a tiny bit swollen, scab is almost all off but the tattoo itself looks good but is very red still and also not black it looks like there is a white layer over the top of it in spots.. I am assuming that this is the new skin healing like when you graze your knee and the scab comes off and skin is white.
If worried go to a doctor but basically it is just a part of getting leg tattoos.. its bound to swell with all the bone and muscle... i agree that it is also dependant on the artist and his style. I have had sleeves done by my artist with no drama but my leg most recently was like this....

best of luck
