Christian tattoo shops

Posted by 2tattoosareenough from IP: 67.136.148.54 on 01/25/07

What do you think of Christian tattoo shops? Would you go to one? (Just assume that the tattoo artist is very good at tattooing.) If you knew that the tattooists in this shop would not do certain tattoos (like nudes, etc.) would that sway your decision one way or another to going there or would it not matter? Do you think that a shop like this would have a chance at being successful or do you think they are destined for failure just because they are limiting themselves? Thanks for the opinions!

nudes...dude...the biggest collection of nude art in the world is owned by the Catholic Church!!

I saw the topic for this post and I thought that it was very interesting, considering that I own a "Christian" tattoo shop. Now I am not sure whether to call it a Christian one, or just that all of my clients and even potential ones know that I consider myself a Christian. Now the issue of not doing certain tattoos does come up with what I believe. But, I will do ANYTHING except for anything OPENLY satanic. Like 666, stuff, I won't tattoo and most of my clients that would want something like that respect my beliefs. What is nice about where I live is that the artists are very close, and I can send them to another artist who is comfortable with stuff like that. and it has paid off in referrals my way, with pieces I enjoy to do. I will do any dark images, its just when it is in DIRECT and I mean DIRECT conflict with my beliefs. For myself I think that God would rather live by example, and not turn someone away because they like dark imagery, or morbid art work. And just showing that a Christian is willing to tattoo that kind of art gives alot of my customers a different point of view on what Christianity is. And that it is a much more open religion than it has been made out to be. Jesus went into alot of places, and situations that were in his day very "sinful," (And even being in some of those places/ situations would have been considered "sin") but in being open minded, through God, Christianity has become one of the largest religions to date. But, I think the major problem with Christianity and tattooing is that peoples personal beliefs got mixed in, and so they found versus in the bible (that are easily up for interpretation) to back up what they were uncomfortable with. And unfortunately there are more people who are uncomfortable with things like tattooing, so there has been years and years of backing the "ban" of things like tattoos/ piercings. And my Dad is actually a pastor up here, and I struggled with my beliefs and what I had passion for, for quite a while before starting to tattoo. And strangely enough my Dad is one of my strongest supporters. He helped me (paid) to get my first equipment, and ordering a couple machines from Pulse. and through just being a normal guy and not turning away images that I am not comfortable with, alot of my customers regularly come to church with me. I know that sounds weird but, times are changing, and a guy with a morbid zombie on his arm can come into certain Christian churches and not be "pushed" back out the front door by being starred down. Anyways, Im not sure where I am going with this, but I just wanted to put in my two cents.

HI. I have been looking for a Christian tattoo parlor / body piercing shop. I have been unable to find one so I have not gotten any done. I wish to get a piercing on my ear that can only be done at a piercing place but I refuse to compromise my beliefs and give money to a place that will tattoo or pierce ANYTHING or ANYWHERE. So, yes it would make a huge difference in the decision I would make about going to a shop.

(If anyone knows of any near Rochester, NY please let me know! thanks!)

I am A Jesus loving tattooed grandmother of three and would get more if I could find a place and artist with the skills required for what I want done. I enjoy the living art of tattoos and they tell the story of the wearer. Its really very beautiful.

I am the owner/operator of Alpha & Omega's Tattoo & Body Piercing. It's a Christian shop in Oshkosh , Wi. I tattoo anything except for satanic, pagan, and nazi stuff.... oh! and barb wire and taz just because those are lame. Actually some of the demonic looking figures , macabre, and skull images are some of the most fun tattoos to do in my opinion. I have no problem with doing nudes either...it's art. And NO! I don't preach to people or try to shove my beliefs down peoples throats. However if someone would like to discuss it or have a healthy debate on the subject, I'm all for it. We even have stacks of free Bibles for the taking. I have not updated it for a while but you can go to my myspace page and check out some of my work in the slideshows. http://www.myspace.com/alpha_and_omegas God Bless!

I like the idea of Christian tattoo shops. An other form of getting the Word out. It shows how judgmental people can be, when you have a Tat some people just assume your a bad seed. We the people need to get past how people look and dress...It's all about your Faith in Jesus Christ!

I'm just getting into tattooing and am a devout Christian; I'd like to own my own shop within the next few years which will be a Christian shop. I agree that there is a huge ministry opportunity in doing "secullar" style tattoos just as going to bars to minister can pay off. I won't do anything demonic but have no issue with skulls, girls, etc. I believe that the time it takes to complete a tattoo is a wonderful opportunity (captive audience) to sew some seed. I also believe that the stuff you have around your shop that is there to be seen while you complete the tattoo has an impact on the customer. I'm all for Christian shops and think that if done right, can be very profitable and a great ministry.

I wouldn't. Mainly because Christianity is a flawed fraud of a religion. It took the worst parts of tablets and rewrote it to gain an upper hand on the population.

Frankly I think if you open a tattoo shop you shouldn't say no to anyone. Your a tattooist. You have a shop. Someone comes in and asks for a tattoo and you say No because you don't like the subject? Its not your skin that will be bearing it.

RE:Christian tattoo shops

I'm extremely concerned about the growth of not only the worldwide pornography industry but also the practice of tattooing, piercing and head shaving with razor blades which has become quite common in the U.S.A. among athletes, musician, celebrities and citizens of the U.S. in general.

Although we have regulations/laws in the U.S.A. concerning tattooing/piercing shops being required to use new/uncontaminated needles for tattooing and piercing, many in the 2nd and 3rd world most likely do not have such regulations nor the tax/government resources to effectively enforce such regulations if those regulations/laws existed.

We in America and the rest of the developed world with our worldwide satellite media have a special duty to be responsible concerning this matter since so much of the 2nd and 3rd world takes their cultural cues from us.....including this practice of tattoing/piercing/head shaving.

The U.S government and associated world health bodies must inform the world of the dangers of tattooing and the associated chronic and deadly diseases which may come from tattooing/piercing and headshaving with dirty needles and razors blades which can transmit
not only HIV/AIDS but hepatitis, tetnus and other possible blood born pathogens.

There is already a worldwide epidemic of Hepatitis and HIV/Aids from irresponsible/immoral sexual behavior and from intravenous drug usage.....tattooing, piercing and head shaving done with unclean needles and razors may be or already has opened new frontiers for these deadly bloodborn pathogens to spread/infect/maim and kill.

How many young people in the 2nd and third world are already tattooing and piercing with dirty/contaminated needles shared with friends so they can be like the althletes and celebrities in America and the developed world.....many of these same young people most likely practice unsafe sex and some most likey inject drugs.
There is an explosion of drug use right now in Iran and other countries because of the flow of heroin/opium from Afghanastan, Mexico and other countries where the drug cartels have gained power because of weak governments etc.

Leviticus 19:28 of the King James bible states:

"ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord."

Leviticus 21:5 of the King James bible states:

"they shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh."

These diseases and plagues brought on by doing these acts, as well as acts of fornication and acts homosexuality are stark warnings from God to refrain from such practices.....the people who practice homosexuality, intravenous drug use, tattooing and unfaithfulness to their wives and husbands are the high risk groups for these plagues.....this is not a coincidence.....this is strong warning from God of the wrath that is already here and the potential wrath that is to come for men and women who do not repent of such rebellion against God.

But, some might say, we use clean, new needles and follow the law!.....yeah, but the tattoos and piercings you create and advertise promote such acts to all who see your tattooed and pierced customers as they walk down the street and the proliferation of this practice worldwide through the electronic media will lead, no doubt to much suffering and death through disease brought on by dirty needles.

Can you enforce the regulation of tattoo parlors in 2nd and 3rd world countries?.....do you have more power than those governments?

Revelation 13:10 of the King James Bible states:

"He that leads into captivity shall go into captivity:
He that kills with the sword must be killed with the sword,
Here is the patience and faith of the saints."

Surely those who participate in the creation of, promoting of, sales and advertising of tattooing and piercing lead many into captivity and death through disease from contaminated needles and surely if the Christian bible is the word of God, which I believe it is, those who participate in tattooing and piercing....especially those who are profiting from tattooing youth, will go into some kind of captivity and death from your actions.....and I myself, if I fail to warn you.

Also, no doubt, when people are tattoed they are looked on with much suspicion by others and they become more likely of being falsely accused of crimes.

Repent and refrain from these repulsive acts and deliver yourself and others from the wrath of God and be blessed.

The profits made from tattooing and piercing will not save you from the righteous judgement and wrath of God.

WOW! This guy above me is serious about his bible reading. What the hell happened to not doing stuff solely based on not being into it? Should the beliefs of the artist outweight his ability? Does it make sense to get the lesser product because of the packaging? I can understand not going to Paul Booth for your Jesus portrait but really, seaking out an artist for his religion, not skill? That seems painfully foolish. And what if you finally find your christian artist and he's not into your bunny with socks? Will the power of God get him stoked about doing it for you? Would you choose the hungover, recently widowed christian doctor to do your surgery over the Jew because of his religion? And where does this game stop? We only cater to Democrats now with a Christian upbringing from Vermont that were home schooled? Leave your religion at home. If you dont want to tattoo Satan on someone, just tell them thats not what your into. Dont make Jesus your reason. He's got bigger things to worry about.

I hate homophobic quote-the-bible guy. Makes me sick.

I am all for freedom of speach, but don't quote the bible when making your points. It's just bad logic. The bible was written by a very many different people, it has been translated from several different languages, and while it may have some lessons that apply to today, that is only coincidence. It is as flawed a document as anything I or any other idiot can scribble on a napkin today.

Back to the subject. Don't let religion play a role in your choice of tattoo artist. Go to the best artist you can get an appointment with and let them design your tattoo with full artistic freedom. If you tell them that you would rather it not be satanic, I doubt they will try to sneak a pentagram in there just for kicks.

Does anyone know of any Christian tattoo shops anywhere even remotely near Delaware? I got an amazing angel done by a guy nearby and I really liked him, was totally impressed by his work, his personality, etc. but then I went in with my boyfriend to get another one priced and he's got his entire work cubicle FILLED with nude art that, to be perfectly honest, offends me. I know I'm in the minority here in the tattoo community in that nudity bothers me, so it's tough to find a place that isn't plastered floor to ceiling with naked women. My feeling is...if I'm paying you $500 to sit there and let you dig a needle into my skin for 5 hours, I should be as comfortable as possible. And yes, you do have a right to express yourself, but when it's at your client's comfort's expense, then I disagree with it. When you work in a service-type job, it's about the customer, not about you.

My son is apprenticing now and is an excellent artist. As a Christian he has suffered under other Christians and been branded by the world as a drug user (even though he's never done drugs). My former employer had such strong views towards him, all negative and let me know it. Personally, there are SO many Christians who want tattoos and I think he should cater to that arena. If this is where God wants him, God will honor those actions. I love my son and support him. God's word says to "train a child up in the way that he should go..." Part of that is recognizing there gifts and calling on their lives.

D.B.'s "used needles & razor blades" rant

Posted by harmz from IP: 67.163.78.55 on 08/27/09
Chicago, IL, USA

I realize that my posting isn't very timely but I'm pretty sure that DB's rant was satire. I mean, he quoted a verse about not trimming sideburns & shaving the head! That's the give away right there!

No Christian, in this century or centuries past sincerely believes that Christians are to adhere to Old Testament ceremonial laws (which are different than moral/ethical laws) like the no beard trimming passage.

I mean, I grew up in a church where certain ceremonial scriptures were fixated on and manipulated to say that women can't cut their hair, wear makeup, ear rings or pants, but never would they say a man can't trim his beard/ sideburns or shave his head. In fact, it was quite the opposite--men with sideburns/beards and unkempt hair were considered worldy, aka sinful.

DB is definitely mocking the kind of Christian who fixates on an Old Testament admonition against ing (though I don't think there are very many of those left under 40 anyway). I'm convinced of this because I employed this same tactic and scripture about beard trimming when my parents tried to throw the verse at me.

DB, very funny. If I'm wrong about you, then please don't have any kids.

Some of the best death metal bands are christian. True Christians beleive that only god has the right to judge and would not turn down someone for wantinting a skull or dark imagry. I would never tattoo something directly satanic even if I wasnt christian, I would not want my name attached to pentagrams and devil crap. Same as I would not (and most artists would not) do swastikas.

My heart goes out to the people who use the scriptures for their own self profitability and self righteousness which by the way was the ONLY thing our Lord and Saviour denounced or got upset about. Jesus was about GRACE and MERCY not self righteousness. Oh by the way...we are under Grace not LAW, quote the NEW TESTAMENT (after Christ arose). Besides what part of your body is going to be saved into eternity anyway. Tattoos can be used for sharing the gospel just as much as the t-shirt you wear, or better yet why do you wear that cross around your neck, the symbol for which my Lord was shamefully crucified on? We can make an issue over anything, the point is WE ARE NOT UNDER THE OLD LAW ANY LONGER. Grace is the place where Christ resides. Peace.

I believe that having more christian tattoo shops would be awesome. People have to understand that we aren't under the law of moses any more. If so, their wouldn't have been any reason for Christ to shead his blood for us all. People who don't think Christians shouldn't do tattoos are very religious. God doesn't care about that, he wants relationships with his kingdom kids. And as Christians we should be bold and go into uncomfortable trades so that we can win souls for Christ. "As Believers we should be able to do whatever that's in Gods will for us." But, as a believer we have to set standards because we can easily step into sin if we don't acknowledge him 1st. We need to be rebels for christ in true love.
So do what you love as long as it doesn't go against Christ. We as believers just want a clean environment.

I own a tattoo shop in North Houston and I am a Christian. We do all kinds of tattoos and get to meet and witness to all walks of life. We do well and don't discriminate against people no matter what they believe in. I don't do some types of tattoos, but I have a guy here who will do most. Come see me.

Some great points have been made on this page. All we here at Devoted Ink have to agree with, is the fact that Christian Tattoos (tattoos related to the gospel of Christ) are some of the most amazing witnessing tools that can be used! I have seen them open the door to witness about Jesus all my life.

My wife and I own a shop together and we are both Christians. We accept the clients that walk through the door but as an artist and as a Christian I have my limits to what I will tattoo. There are many respectible artists that refuse to do tribal, taz, dragons,... or anything else that they are not interested in... why is it such a big deal if a Christian tattoo artist desides that he's not interested in tattooing pictures of Satan or other demonic images? Personally I do not do anything that I feel is demonic, not because I have anything against the person but because my heart wouldn't be into it and the piece would be less than my best. I have no interest in tattooing pornographic images because of what they represent. I have nothing against artistic nudes but prefer not to do them simply out of respect for my wife. In our shop, we don't preach the word but it's fairly obvious when you walk in that we are followers. I would hope that the way we carry ourselves and how we treat our customers that they can tell right away. You may not agree with our beliefs, our values, or our standards but if you walk into true Christian tattoo shop you should be treated with respect and dignity because you are valued as a human being not just someone with a handful of cash.

I am in no way against the idea of a Christian tattoo shop, but I am kinda confused as to where tattooing/getting tattooed falls into a Biblical perspective. The Bible speaks agianst the practice as being pagan, but in revelations Jesus has the names of the horsemen tattooed so....
Seems like a fine line to walk.

I am owner/artist of a faith based studio. I personally have wrestled with where all this sits with my own convictions. I have chosen to take time to decern whether the image that a client wants is cool for me to do or if it will effect them in an negative way. For me it is not so much about image but the heart and intent.I love doing lengthy consults and that gives me time to weigh this things.I have worked in shops where you do whatever the person wants and found myself in conflict with that. The feedback i get from clients as well as people walking in our studio is that it is different, in atmosphere, and relationals towards the person wanting a tattoo. The area i live in and have my studio in is hyper-conservative ( amish/ mennonite ) so I have had to engage in religious conflicts due to people being taught that GOD does not want people to get tattooed. Myself as well as other faith based shops are doing a service to the industry.....one mindset at a time.
