Most of the tats pointed out here are not Tibetan at all, though a few are. I can read and write Tibetan myself and am pretty well versed in Tibetan Buddhist practice and culture.
Here is one of my original designs: http://www.neoscales.com/images/tat1.gif
The "HRI" is mind essence, it is "red" to represent the Amitabha buddha family. The lower seal is the sun and moon, with a "HUNG" with a modified Tibetan flag used as a design background.
Here is the ink: http://www.neoscales.com/images/tat.jpg
Let me know if I can help anyone... |

Just so you know, to us Buddhists, using Lord Buddha or other aspects of our religion as decorative use is very negative, almost sinful. Especially an image of the Lord Buddha himself, since your body is used for less than holy acts such as sex and other things as well.
"om ma ni pad me hung" is slightly more acceptable, but choose location carefully so it is never sat on, etc,...
I would suggest getting a Buddhist protection tattoo or tattoo to bring forth good luck/health/wealth/long life... because those have a purpose and it is a good cause with no harm done.
there are some beautiful images that can be used for protection, but they are very intricate...
an auspicious symbol would also be a good tattoo, one of the 8 or all 8 possibly.
good luck! :) |

There are hundreds of Buddhists mantras using either sanskrit or Tibetan letters you can have done. But be careful it`s spelt right by checking Tibetan Buddhist sites, otherwise It`ll look silly to those in the know....are you Buddhist ? One has to be careful were some Buddhist mantras & images are put otherwsie you may cause offence to actual Buddhists....eg Don`t have such things on your butt...sounds funny I know but I`m serious .. so checking the appropriate location of a tattoo is maybe a good thing ( I`m a Buddhist of 27 years or so ).....anyway, good luck....Om Mani Peme Hum would be the best one to have...a beautiful mantra with many profound meanings. |

In regards to your search, I am in the midst of having the mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, tattooed down my side of my rib cage in traditional Tibetan lettering(figures). If you are interested in pictures or have any suggestions let me know.
I do know of one original design of this mantra that is easily attainable. Brandon Boyd, lead singer of 'Incubus,' has an original design that he created from the tibetan lettering tattooed down his forearm in red. Underneath is a Koi fish in a circular shape, also inked in red. |

The new tattoo on the back of Alyssa Milano, is of the Tibetan 'hum' character, i checked it out with my friend Tashi, who is an expert in Tibetan scripts: www.inkessential.com He tells me it is Tibetan Uchen script, however and unfortunatly, in Alyssa's case, it is drawn in-correct, perhaps over stylised beyond the correct proportions and construction, it would not be pritty to the eye of a Tibetan.
So my advice is to go to a good authority like Tashi, before you get inked.
silly Alyssa did not do her homework ! |

The True Sound of Truth An old story speaks about a similar problem. A devoted meditator, after years concentrating on a particular mantra, had attained enough insight to begin teaching. The student's humility was far from perfect, but the teachers at the monastery were not worried. A few years of successful teaching left the meditator with no thoughts about learning from anyone; but upon hearing about a famous hermit living nearby, the opportunity was too exciting to be passed up. The hermit lived alone on an island at the middle of a lake, so the meditator hired a man with a boat to row across to the island. The meditator was very respectful of the old hermit. As they shared some tea made with herbs the meditator asked him about his spiritual practice. The old man said he had no spiritual practice, except for a mantra which he repeated all the time to himself. The meditator was pleased: the hermit was using the same mantra he used himself -- but when the hermit spoke the mantra aloud, the meditator was horrified! "What's wrong?" asked the hermit. "I don't know what to say. I'm afraid you've wasted your whole life! You are pronouncing the mantra incorrectly!" "Oh, Dear! That is terrible. How should I say it?" The meditator gave the correct pronunciation, and the old hermit was very grateful, asking to be left alone so he could get started right away. On the way back across the lake the meditator, now confirmed as an accomplished teacher, was pondering the sad fate of the hermit. "It's so fortunate that I came along. At least he will have a little time to practice correctly before he dies." Just then, the meditator noticed that the boatman was looking quite shocked, and turned to see the hermit standing respectfully on the water, next to the boat. "Excuse me, please. I hate to bother you, but I've forgotten the correct pronunciation again. Would you please repeat it for me?" "You obviously don't need it," stammered the meditator; but the old man persisted in his polite request until the meditator relented and told him again the way he thought the mantra should be pronounced. The old hermit was saying the mantra very carefully, slowly, over and over, as he walked across the surface of the water back to the island.

For those of you getting these mantra and symbol tattoos please ask yourselves the following questions, "why are your getting it?" Is out of love for the Dharma or is it out of love for the materialistic expression of their form?
Will you maintain your body like a shrine since it carries an acknolwedgement of enlightenment? Will you inform people who ask about your tatoo about the time you have spent searching for the true meaning of reality and emptiness? Will you enlighten people with the many aspects of the Dharma? Will you respect the symbols many years from now or will you have them erased by a laser like a stray pencil mark on an old book? Will you continue to hold yourself to find compassion in your heart for all beings? Will you recognize the burdens of all sentient beings and the need to value all life everyday? |

Sometimes you have to abandon the internet and actually go to a bookstore or library. I found a reproduction of an early 19th century Tibetan-English dictionary at Shambala Books in Berkeley Calif. I took two phrases in Sanskrit and have them on my arm, Faith and Virtue. I would advise not relying on the internet but checking out a printed dictionary. |

People keep on saying that "Om mani padme hum" means to hail the jewel in the lotus , yes that is a loose translation for people who need a complete sentence but oever all this mantra cannot be converted into complete english sentence, it basically stands for everything buddha has taught.
Om- blessed to help achieve perfection ma- practice of pure ethics ni- practice of tolerance and patience pad- practice of perserverance me- perfection in concentration hum- perfection in wisdom
i also have one question i sometimes see this script written two different ways, one with a circle on top of a line and anthoer cirlce and one with just a straight line at the end, can anyone tell me what the difference is.Im getting the tattoo and dont want to have a different meaning than i intended, even my asian grandparents cannot tell me the answer |

Just to add. If I want a symbol on my butt then I am free to do as I please despite anyone's narrow thinking. Loosen up and move on from rules! Must you live your life forever bound by another's constraints? Hope not. |
