What do I need to open a tattoo shop? Please help!

Posted by Missy from IP: 71.68.231.32 on 08/20/06
Myrtle Beach, SC

I would really love to open a tattoo shop somewhere in SC . Tattooing became legal in here in March and a row of shops popped up immediatley. I am willing to sell my house so that I will have money to open, and move somewhere that a tattoo shop would do well. A lot of places will not even hear of a tattoo shop opening in their town. It's crazy. Anyway, I am not an artist, but I am a collector and feel that I will be fine in the business end of the shop. I just really need help knowing exaclty what to buy and what steps to take in order to make this dream a reality.

yeah, getting talented artists is the hardest and most essential parts. Tattoo artists owned studios have a hard time finding good artists to work for them, what do you have that they dont?

Just a heads up, not getting at you or anything, but there was a thread about this not too long ago. Unless I'm just imagining things...it had a lot to say about how owning a shop while not being an artist yourself is going to be a pain in the ass, particularly when somebody doesn't shop up for work and stuff.

What do you think you'll need? Just be logical about it. Obviously you're going to need a lot of money, imagine an amount for rent, supplies, artists, licenses, law suits, ect....and "double it" as they said in the last thread. And in any business, getting your name out there is key. Ah what do I know, haha...just 19 years old here ;), let the vets talk to you about this one.

at least be willing to invest 10-15k to setup a nice... shop at least in Miami
rent machines, furniture, gear, and the and part good artists and location.
Then all the legal paper work required by your state.

I am in the process of opening my tattoo shop, and so far I'll be the only artist until I can find someone above decent to split the work with. My fiance will do the rest, orders, appointments, paying bills. I am a designer so the advertising material I have it already cover, but you'll need to communicate to your town that you are open for biz.

If you have the money and at least one artist you are good to go. Don't do things assuming or guessing, you may waste money and/or be liable for big troubles. Most tattoo supplier will required that you are established to take your orders.

Don't expect to become a millionaire the first week, invest in advertising and be willing to finance the shop without making a penny at least for three months (a back up plan is better than to be sorry)

Holla if you need more info

My 1.5 cents

yeah good artist to start. Troy Lane is a well known tattoo artist in the hood and he is the only one tattooing and answering the phone. He's work is amazing, the shop is booked. That's the way he likes to run the biz.

Start with one, and grow as the business grow.
Now you are going to tell me that the first day you opened you had four full time artists?

Come on man, Tattoo business is "a business" if you have a business mentality you will know what I am talking about. Grow with the growth.

Many shops in my area are run by one guy that want's to start his own venture.

UH.....yeah I think I kinda have an idea...my stuidio has been open for 21 years here and supports 5 families...we don't get rich but thats not what its about ...Now, a non tattooing shop owner having only one artist IS suicide because if that artists leaves in the middle of the night because he/she got a better offer or if that one artist got in a wreck and broke his hand or got really sick or any of a thousand things that could and DO happen the shop is closed PERIOD til another artist is found...I find your prancing like you know everything a bit tiring...you seem like a nice guy...try to really READ what I post instead of riding the "attack TAZ"'bandwagon...just think about it...T

Taz you are right, if you are a non artist, it will be kind of tricky, but you can have the artist under contract. Like every business, a tattoo shop has it's risks.
Taz I don't know everything, I just speak what I know, not more not less.

I perfectly read your post, in my case to be the only artist will work great, because I will be the one running the shop and hassling with.

I may take you up for some guest appearance, no need to get mad man.

I agree 100%, opening a studio with only one artist is really stupid. I knew the rule, broke it myself, and the artist bailed after 5 months. Hires another artist, bailed before he got here. If it wasnt for TattooNOW, and the amazing artists coming in for guest spots, I have no idea how I would have survived... Growing something organically is essential, I would start with two artists. Not only will you have a little security, their creativity bounces off each other and the energy of the studio will be greater... more action when people walk in and what not. though, finding two good artists is very difficult!

Why would someone even help a non tattooist open a shop is beyond me. It's looking for trouble . A person who does not tattoo usually does not have the skills necessary to judge the quality of work their artists are doing and tend to open shops for the money factor. We have tons in y town that open every summer and close by winter. Why would you open a garage if you aren't a mechanic

Personally, coming from a completely snobby bout of view, i dont think anyone should tattoo or open a studio unless they are actively adding and pushing the industry onwards and upwards. To do so you need to have a lot of relatively rare qualities including knowledge off the art of tattooing (you need to know a bit before you can push!), talent, dedication, and integrity. the qualities are hard enough to find in artists, never mind business people...

I Agree People who have never Tattooed for a living shouldn’t own studios. Look at this board not unlike any other board a Tattooist opinion carries no weight until a portfolio is obtained, But anyone else is allowed an opinion with full credit based on the love of art & the intelligence of wording.
Shop owners who don’t Tattoo aren’t there for the love of the art, They don’t know the feeling of working your ass off to learn a new technique or how your back aches from a long day of tattooing/stress. I find Gabes post insulting as if Artist aren’t business minded or smart enough to pull off promoting themselves or the Tattoo industry.

that means these qualities are HARDER to find in a non-artist than an artist and a tattoo artist has it easier owning a shop

Yeah, not so sure what yer offended by... I know talented tattoo artists that shouldn't own businesses because, well, they love and know tattooing but dont know or care a lick for business... But obviously tattoo artists are the most qualified to run tattoo shops. To be clear , I own a tattoo studio and dont tattoo. Ive worked for years and years in the industry, but cant draw to save my life.

So According to you ( Gabe ) Anyone with good business sense should or could open a Studio simply because you know they can make money at it. I don’t find your argument that some Tattooist shouldn’t have a studio a good enough reason you or Cory Hart to own one.

Its very unprofessional to put words in someones mouth.

I said
"the qualities are hard enough to find in artists, never mind business people..."

That means its hard enough to find a tattoo artist who is talented and dedicated and loves business and is adding something to the industry, never mind trying to find that quality in a non artist. That said, I do think our studio is pushing things forward and Im honored to work hard for some very talented folks...

whatever people, I have a headache!

I find all this bashing of non tattooist shop owners a bit tiring. Man your either a good businessmen, or not. Same goes for being an ass hole. I've worked for a tattooer/shop owner, and he was an ass hole. But a good businessman. I worked there for 1 year and jumped ship. Why? Cause he sucked to work for. I can name about a dozen other artists who are in, or have been in similar positions.
IM not saying that every non tattooer, with some business savvy should run out and open up shops. But like any thing else there are exceptions to the rule. I know Gabe, and I'd like to think he's one of them.
Here's one for ya, there's a fella from upstate NY who's head of a board of directors, who plan on opening up tattoo shops all across this great nation. In shopping Malls! This fella's not some evil minded business mogul, no He's a tattooist. So much for only "tattooist" caring about the business.
most of the problems in this industry, started here, by tattooist's. So much for how much us tattooists care for our own. Wrap yer head round that.

Josey, you said "So According to you ( Gabe ) Anyone with good business sense should or could open a Studio simply because you know they can make money at it."

Those are words you clearly put into my mouth. I have never thought or said that anyone with good business sense should open a studio because they can make money at it. I said the only reason to open a tattoo studio should be to push the industry up. BIG difference. Doing anything for the money is wrong (in my opinion) ESPECIALLY marking someone for life.

"Let me get this straight you feel its hard to find artist with talent, dedication or integrity, And your intent in opening Tattoo studios was to bring that back into our Industry ?"

for one, I have met tons of artists with little talent, dedication, or integrity. I havnt brought anything back into the industy, though, I have brought some talented, dedicatred, etc, etc artists to my neck of the woods. My intent with opening the one studio I own was to create a comfortable place for the artists I work with to hang out and do incredible work for the public in western mass. I have lived here for over a decade and wanted to bring world class artists through here. Watching these artists work on locals warms my heart. May be cheesy, but its the truth.

"Who owns any business not to make Money ? Oh yeah your bringing back the morals lost to Artist who cared enough to learn the trade but not enough to promote it……"

I cant wait to make a chunk of change, but for now I pay my bills (mostly on time) with TattooNOW and havnt drawn a check from the studio in like 7 months. I feel the risk Im taking is worth it, and that financial success will be the result of bringing such talent to the area, but if $$$ was my main motivation I would have stuck to freelance programming for big corporate fuckers. Instead I sling websites for tattoo artists because they trust me to do a better job than the guy they can get a site from for free.

"Excuse me but that reads like your “ Pushing “ your way into something you didn’t care enough about to learn first hand."

Seriously man, you really really dont want me tattooing. I have learned quite a bit about tattooing from getting tattooed by some amazing artists and working with them every day for years and years. I care enough about tattooing to not fuck someone up at it!!!

"You know its easy for people like you to stand next to great artist and judge tattoo work, But I ask what gives you the right ?"

Really, its easy? Well, I dunno, I guess I'll judge tattoos and artwork because I look at tattoos and artwork from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep every day and have for years. I dont wanna push my views on anyone that doesnt wanna hear them though... I do decline to judge tattoo contests at conventions when asked, though...

"People who don’t know how to Tattoo could never put back into this industry what they take out."

Welp, for the most part thats true, though your use of absolute is inherently wrong. I also want to point out again that just because someone tattoos doesn't mean they are putting anything into the industry.

Damn you guys send in the heavy weight for my Ass. Hello again Joe Let me start off by saying I respect your work & we’ve talk once at a show and I felt like you was a good guy not just a good artist. I’m sorry you mistook my debating as bashing that was never my intent, Makes me wonder how I should respond to you. I’ll try and be gentle & respectful, Anytime this topic comes to message boards the end replies are always the same “ Exception to the Rule “ So we agree there should be a Rule. But that leaves us with the question about who decides which ones are the exception ? What makes Gabe the exception ? What Makes Cory Hart the exception ? And No Disrespect to anyone just if we are going to let business people run our industry why be down on the Fella from NY opening up in malls across America ? Maybe he is the exception to someone’s Rule.

Now Can I have some Free Flash ? LOL

Hey Gabe, Sorry about putting them words in your mouth that was just the way I interpreted them. But after reading your last post I still feel the same, Too be honest I find it hard to believe you only opened a studio to push the industry up . Without putting words in your mouth quote:
I cant wait to make a chunk of change
Surely now you can see why you are not the exception to any rule only a man with the support of Artist you have budded up too in order to cheat your way into a world the rest of us have to work for, Kind of of an Insult to others who feel you aren’t an exception to any rule wouldn’t you say ?
Quote: I care enough about tattooing to not fuck someone up at it!!!
How about caring enough not to compete with someone who has devoted the time to become an Artist & Businessman?
Now don’t get me wrong Gabe I have nothing personal with you just people like you who keep intruding on the industry rather than taking the time to learn it.

In closing
If there was a Rule half my competition would be gone, Lucky for them & you their isn’t a Rule.

Gabe has earned the respect of the tattooing community as a whole and I'm sure he will continue to be in the forefront of all things tattoo...lets try to think about what hes done not what he isn't...Gabe is not a tattoo artist but he stands shoulder to shoulder with many who are....for what its worth....props....peace til I kill ya!...TAz

There are no true rules. You want to know how you know who deserves it, and who doesn't? You get to know the people in question. And un fortunately you learn to live with the one who don't deserve it.

Did I say Hard work doesn’t deserve reward ?
What I did say if your going to contribute to an industry such as this, you should learn it from the ground up. So what many Tattooist cant draw but they can learn to put out tattoo work even better than some freehand artist. But see they gave all, Taking the time to learn it. Some even go on to art school just to further themselves. Yet people think some should stand said side by side artist from merely being friends with them. NO I say !!! You should be Rewarded For Hard work, But I think there should be a Price to Pay before making $$$ off of someone else’s Hard work or Reputation.

I do find it insulting for people to buy their way into this industry, I don’t think these people are “: pushing Up “ the Tattoo industry by being a broker for the Tattoo world. Others give a lot more to tattooing with a lot less gratitude then this broker does. Your Right Joe The world isn’t fair, Having coughed that onto this board, Why Bitch about people who screw up others trying to learn the trade ? Why Bitch about Tattoo schools or Shop owner who charge for the Apprenticeships ? Why Bitch about scab studios just chalk it up to : Life’s unfair “ You Don’t Have to agree with My Opinion, But don’t ya think your arguments wouldn’t seem so hypocritical if you posted your Opinion without the exception to the rule ? Your right Joe Tattooist hurt this trade more so than anyone but maybe your to blame just as you blame others seeing how you want to apply your exception then another tattooist applies theirs and so on and so on. I read that as you play the same role in hurting the trade as anyone does, By endorsing your peeps then badmouthing others, Either make it OK for all or for None, in Opinion only Please Not Like you can change the world or can You ?

I Never came here to troll, But as a member I do have my opinions, So when does someone ask for my work to enforce my creditability ? I know its on your finger tips, But how to place it here without it backfiring to Gabe ? Maybe clever wording ? See what I’m getting at ? An Artist or Tattooist has no creditability until the portfolio can be judged, while people like Gabe get a Free Ticket.

Taz I would Like for you to point out what Gabe has done for the Tattoo world That Others Have Not, Besides riding the Tattoo wave without a Board.

In closing:
Gabe many like him are Brokers nothing more, I think the Tattoo industry would have been just fine maybe more so if the Business people didn’t intrude on real tattooist Towns & Pocket books. I have read no real argument in this thread only that there is a exception to the rule in every circle jerk.

Gabe again I have nothing personal against you this is just my Opinion not a game to kick up, I guess this means no free flash huh Joe. LOL

SO let me see if i follow this correctly. you dont think Gabe or people like him should ever have a hand in the tattoo industry because they dont tattoo. You know what buddy your opinion is just that YOUR opinion not the tell all end all. Gabe is indeed helping push the industry forward. before gabes site. i had no idea what was capable of being put into to skin. His sites feature some of the most amazing tattoos and tattoo artists i have ever had the good grace of seeing. because of gabes site instead of having to guess with the local shops abilities. im going to get my sleeve done by jason tyler grace. if not for gabes site i would have no idea jason tyler grace existed or how talented he is. Same with Nikko. Im going to get a color portrait from Nikko. and again i would have had no idea who Nikko or that he was as freakishly talented he is. Gabe is doing alot more for this industry than youd imagine. I mean what exactly makes you feel you can tell someone what business they should be in. What good are you doing for the tattoo industry? sorry buddy but you are waaaaayyy wrong here. and i would have thought two respected artists like taz and joe capobianco standing up for gabe might give you a little insight into how much they respect they have for what hes doing.

I don't think dude was stating anything besides his opinions really , but I also don't think he makes the distinction between how people in the industry are judged either. And i'm pretty sure he doesn't appear to give credit where it's due. Not to Gabe , but too all the intelligent business men and women who's passion for the industry and desire to profit from it has brought it to new and better socially acceptable hieghts. Not saying that I know anyone's motives for entering a business at all. But I'd like to think you don't venture into the world of big spending to go broke. especially when you've got more than just your own mouth to feed.

Taz I think stated his shop is the major providing force for 4? 5 families? Something like that. That alone is something to be proud of. From what I understand about Gabe he's in much the same boat.

And it doesn't take a good artist to run a successful business it takes a good business minded individual providing a quality service, not too mention all the marketing , advertising, PR , R&D, and SPENDING in order for a business to be profittable. I can draw so so i'm not the best so maybe I should open up a subway store instead of brokerage firm? Is that the mentality we're shooting for? cause it really baffles me.

I'm grasping here cause I hate to see just one side of a story. But I think the guy means that , a good tattoo artist with the ability to learn good business skills would make a better Shop owner Or vice versa a good businessman that can learn to tattoo. Whatever . At any rate I don't think he's meaning to discredit all positive energy and motion that non tattooing parlor owners have so enthusiastically set in motion, be it for love or money.
But hell i've been wrong before, might happen again.

Dutchman, Correct it was my Opinion.
Just as you feel Gabe is the only reason you found good tattoos on the net. But because Gabe showed you a good Tattoo site does that really justify him taking a % of $ from the Tattoo community ? To that I say YES Anything he makes off of his web sites talent is honestly earned and fair to competing boards or Geeks. Him sponsoring artist to compete against each other well to me that’s a different story, See Dutch owning a studio should be life’s Reward for an Artist/Tattooist.
Let me tell ya Dutch tattooing is a hard job, when you see this board and others using terms like “ tattoo snob “ or “ scab shop “ this language is used to domineer an area. These term definitions are subject to the author of the post, Drawing a line in the sand either you are with them or against them, Never really knowing who you maybe against next. You read talk all over this board about Aliases and known posters bitching & crying to Gabe about we need to know who may get bashed/offended, Put it together now Dutch ? Because everyone has an exception to the rule, Your opinion may need to be hidden when choosing who you want to associate with.
That’s the very reason you name dropped to me about Joe & Taz as if my attitude should change, No thanks my Opinions aren’t for Sale, Only available for change.

God Bless J

Thanks Jer, for once your right ahaha

Oh geez im sorry dick i thought that being able to tattoo for a living was a tattoo artists dream. and i wasnt name dropping buddy. just naming two people who respect gabe. like i do. and yes it was gabes site that helped me. There arent many like his that are more than just picture galleries. but a hub that helps people find good artists in their area. Respect is earned not given which is something i dont feel you understand yet. you want people to kiss your ass and revere you than start a religion. hell L. Ron Hubbard did and look at the success he reaped. All i really care about is becoming a tattoo artist. and this site and the people who post here (taz especially) has shown me the dedication and humility it requires like no other site did. So you know what buddy i highly respect gabe and alot of people on here who take the time to HELP people. Competing artists? Im sorry i must have missed it when Gabe started dropping artists into an arena and pitted them against each other in savege gladiatorial combat. I dont know what youre looking for buddy but if you arent finding it here perhaps i can offer a little insight. FIND SOMEPLACE ELSE.

Lisence For Tattooing

Posted by she_devil from IP: 65.80.11.224 on 11/26/06

Umm. I heard you need a lisence to give tattoo's. I was wondering, what classes and degrees are needed to get the correct lisence. And about how long should it take to get a lisence? Also, are there any states in the United States that prohibates tattoo shops?

I am not a tattoo artist and I've thought about opening a shop myself over the past year or so. This is, after all, America, and as long as a perosn has integrity and does business in a proper way, there are no laws against anyone opening a tattoo shop. As an American, I don't like hearing people tellpeople they can't dosomething just because they don't belong to a particular group.

What's the problem anyway, as long as I run a clean, proffessional and honest business? And as far as not having a discerning eye or not being a good judge, that's what PARTNERS are for.

It's real simple. I find a great artist. I've been a businessman for 15 + years now, and I can find what I'm looking for. I offer this artist a generous piece of the business, under signed contract. That means we're partners. He/she teaches me the business end, and gets a salary while doing so until we start making a healthy profit, at which point the artist gets their piece and the salary goes away. Of course, I don't open the shop unless I have several artists, because that would be crazy.

Here's the good part. A great artist might really be looking to own his own business but doesn't have the money or want to spend all of his time administering a business. That's where I come in. I provide the money and the labor. Give me a year and I'll be running the joint with my eyes closed, working 24//7 if I have to. Meanwhile, a great artist can get their shot at something bigger and possibly take a few younger artists with them.

If you work hard, stay honest, and do things right, everyone can make money. So there's the answer. If you want to do it, do it. But plan things out and stay real.

jhnj6120, the problem is, if a tattoo artist is so great they are booked and dont really need you. Pretty much every single professional studio that wants to is always looking for truly talented custom tattoo artists. What are you going to offer a great tattoo artist they cant get somewhere else from someone who knows the business?

If you invest in tattooing and dont fully understand the responsibility of marking the publics skin for their life then you are setting yourself up for a shitload of bad karma.

Whatever, people who dont know better and open studios have a very low ceiling, cause the talented artists for the most part know better/can create better on their own...

Josey, Jesus Christ, stop being such a cry baby. Your mad because you busted your ass to become what you are today and Gabe didn't go throught the same steps as you to be what he is now. He knows code and since he knows how to do that, he thought "hey, how can I implement this work into my love for tattoos?" and here we are today posting on his successfull website. This site is great and there is no other one like it. That's why so many talented artists are on here all the time. Stop being so butthurt and realize that anyone, ANYONE, can do w/e they please with their lives, jobs, etc and don't need to answer to anybody else. True, some shouldn't venture into the tattoo business, but some do a hell of a good job at running tattoo shops or tattoo related businesses and do good for the industry. That's your god dam exception to the rule. Knowing who and what is being done and what good comes out of it. If anything, even one good thing comes out of it, they are contributing to the industry. Your ultimatums are annoyingly dumb as there is no reason for them.

Hi, My name is Wing Nut. I am looking for work in the Arcadia, Noblesville area in Indiana. I apprenticed under Elijah @ Rite of Passage Tattoo. I am a good artist on skin and paper. I am great at drumming up business and can work well with clients coming up with designs. Even if you want to open up a shop get a hold of me. There is a major need for a shop in this area. I now work soley with private clientele, and a store front in this area would bank a small fortune. People up here don't want to travel to Indianapolis to get work done. Get back to me if there are any local shops that would be willing to put me to work or interested in opening up a new one.

Here's what is bugging me. You guys are arguing and blowing each other a load of crap over one guy interested in opening a shop. All he asked for was advice. I thought there were no "Stupid Questions" If your really serious about a shop opening up, I would not put one where it's going to be surrounded by a ton of new shops that all have the same idea as you. Demographics is a key element in building your business. The area where I live is crying for a shop. I think you would do good right here where I am located. Sure, sure...you don't live here I know, but I am a business mogul also, and I would be more than willing to help you establish one and manage it. I also have another venture that you might be interested in, that would bring you WAY more money than a tattoo shop ever would, for a fraction of the cost and a whole lot less headache. If you never do anything else in your life, you need to contact me. Consider me the "caught leprechaun" savvy? I will make you a wealthy man. contact me at : jmonroney@yahoo.com

Is it ALWAYS better to offer piercing too rather than just a tattoo shop??? Is it foolish to open up a shop and work strictly by appointments only on weekdays, and on the weekends open to all customers??? Please answer straight up... Peace.

All I know that opening a studio is alot of hard work and long dedicating -exausting hours 13-15 hours especially on the weekeneds. I know this cuz I've done it --I've been tattooing for 9 years. I am planing of opening a business I do know the basics but still and always would feel I'll never stop learning--which is a good thing. I've experienced the rewards as being an artist came from getting to know a little bit about each customer as well as there stories ( It's like a small trust of a bond of some sort). That keeps them coming back. It's amazing when you treat your clients with welcoming respect and kindness --and how some give back in return. People loved hangin out at the shop ( but not at the stations). Some supplied lunch.

i dont see that its so bad. other people do it. the tattoo industry is just quirky at the best of times. i think the biggest hurdle would be that there is already a lot of tattoo shops (good ones) already and there doesnt really need to be another one if you see what i mean. i definitely wouldnt sell my house to do it.
but successful people didnt veer on the side of caution, they went for it. but you can go for things in a calculated way. anyway i think if thats what you wanna do then go for it and good luck, but dont sell your house!

Honestly, I don't feel it is a crime to have a non artist own the studio. Many artists don't want to have to deal with the business end, but would rather come in work without having to deal with paperwork, taxes, and 100% of the people that come in -- including the tat-rats who never get anything done and have no real interest in more than flirting with your artist. It's nice to have a buffer between the door and the artist/s and it helps the customers because who are they left to talk to if everyone is inking. I'm in the process of opening a shop with one artist and two piercers (myself being one). However, If I did not know this artist personally for several several years, I would probably not even think about trying it with someone I met off the street a week ago. My biggest aggravation when walking into a shop? Arrogant artists that talk to their customers as if they should either know everything about tattooing, or they shouldn't bother to be in their oh so divine presence. Pick your artists not only by their talent, but by their demeanor. That has made me walk out of more shops than anything else. I know a great deal about the profession, yeah so what, but I don't let on to that when walking in. You can really judge character by how someone treats a "noob". Brandon Bond doesn't even treat people like that, and he actually has something to boast about.

well ,i admire someone who wants to follow a dream. im actually in the long process of opening my own shop in corona CA, and ive been an artist for 9 years. the most important thing in this industry is knowledge!! just learning the art of tattooing and being in shops is very important. i mean, if u have the money ya u can open a shop. but it doesnt mean its gonna be sucessful. i would say, learn about the trade more, and how a real quality tattoo shop runs before u dive into this. trust me, none of us need another shop to open that has a bunch of amatures running it.

well after reading everyone's input I've developed an opinion... i have been a tattoo artiest only for about a year now I'm not seasoned yet and (Gabe) may not be an artiest but i feel he has done great things for the industry he does what he loves. (now like i said I'm the new guy and have a lot to learn about this industry but i hope to learn about it till the day i die) in fact we as tattoo artiest all love what we do and that's the reason isn't it for the love of it yes we all need a little money to live but you can love the industry and not love to tattoo and i think Gabe is the perfect example of that. and where i stand we can all teach and we can all learn from one another including non-tattoo artiest who have devoted there selves like Gabe has....Joe i mean no disrespect it is just a difference of opinion i believe any and everybody can give something back to the tattoo industry if they educate them selves and love the arts...but you DO NOT have to be an artiest to give back to the tattoo industry for the simple fact that it's not all about the art the art is just an important factor it's about the struggle and sacrifices necessary to do what you love in life....i heard someone once say and i quote(you'll never work a day in your life if you do what you love)and that to me is the reason for tattooing....so as little as it may matter (Gabe) has my full support mad props bro keep it up.......

I can totally agree that opening a tattoo shop when your not an artist is crazy. My fiancé and I am going to be opening a shop soon. He has been tattooing for over 14 years now and he is teaching me. To start off he is going to be pushing the ink and I will be handling the other end of the business since I know more about that stuff then he does. I wouldn't even think about doing it unless I had him. We aren't in it to make a fortune. It will make us happy just to make enough to live comfortablly and to tattoo. After we get the business going we plan to get at least one other artist if we need to. Otherwise I'm just going to keep learning and practicing and then I'll be able to jump in and help out when needed. Plus it will be nice since I know there are some people out there that prefer a female artist. We are both looking forward to it :)

I disagree completely. I opened a tattoo studio about 1 year ago and I am not a tattoo artist. I handle the business side of things, work on reception, book appointments and pay the bills. The shop has grown from strength to strength and my two artists (and one piercer) are quite happy. Having someone who is completely dedicated to promoting the business and ensuring that it grows, takes a lot of stress off the tattooists back and allows them to concentrate on producing top quality work. Not every tattooist wants to run a business, and many (like everyone else), may not be qualified to handle running a business. I am not in the business solely for the money. I love tattoos, an opportunity presented itself to open a studio with my business partner (who is a piercer) and I grabbed it with both hands........largely to get away from my previous, boring office job.
