The spade is derived from the sword in the tarot deck. It is not the death card, which would be part of the major arcana. Death is always an ending of one thing and the beginning of another, often a transformation. The meaning of each spade depends on the number of spades or, if used in a card, which card it is. Upside down does not always mean one thing, nor does point upward - again it depends on which card you have and where it falls in the reading as to what it means and how it affects your life. The spade symbol itself to me depicts a warrior. One who fights for liberty, honor, integrity, etc. A book of spiritual wisdom in one hand and a sword of honor in the other. The point upward to me symbolizes the striving to attain higher wisdom and purpose and to stand upright. To be an upright person, but well grounded (given the strong base of the spade.) The club to me symbolizes growth, health, knowledge and prosperity / abundance in general. The diamond symbolizes wealth and external abundance / prosperity in relation to wealth and prestige. The heart symbolizes love and relationships and the connection we all have to one another - our life force.

There is a controversal meaning summed up as follows... "If you are a woman who prefers sex with black men, now there is a simple, inexpensive and discreet way to advertise your preference. A Queen of Spades Temporary Tattoo will help potential black lovers identify you at parties, at nightclubs, or even at the supermarket. It will also let white men know they would be wasting their time with you. Place a tattoo in a conspicuous place on your body when you go out on the town to pick up black men, then remove the tattoo before you go to work next Monday morning!"
Back in the late 80s or early 90s an illegal combat training camp did similar markings on kids. They tattooed a cross there and upon completion they covered it with a spade. Ran by mercs, those people were dangerous and they put those kids through hell. The kids came back knowing how to kill and warped enough to do it! The parents complaints were met with intimidation. I quit being friends with my best friend because he returned changed and scary calling himself Lazarus. He talked about a Knavesis and Cashmere he referred to as fellow prongs saying crazy things.

I have done some research & the original meaning behind the spade is that it represents death, but not in a morbid way more of a circle of life kinda way. a deck of cards has 52 cards 1 for each week in a year, 4 suits = 4 seasons, 13 cards per suit = 13 weeks per quarter year I think?. the spade is the death of the year which comes each year allowing a new beginning for the next year. so the spade is like a symbol of death in the same way winter is death and spring is life. hope that helps.
