heyy i'm new to the site and to tattoos. sorry if this has already been answered.
One week ago today(sat) i got a small star on my foot(my first one), about the size of a quarter, its outlined in black with a blue inside, he mixed white and blue. he used new needles, he showed me, and did a good job. i am scared tho that i have an infection/irritation. idk which one. the tattoo is semi red on the outsides. not too bad tho, and a little swollen, again not too bad. the edges have lost its scab and look fine. but the inside is still lumpy. it doesnt hurt to touch but is still somewhat sensitive. can anyone please help me in trying to find a quick solution to this. please feel free to email me(anytime of the day!) with help and/or questions. id be open to send a picture if its needed.
and advice would be greatly appreciated! |

I got my first tattoo on Sunday (11/23/08). I got it on my right foot, it's kind of placed off to the side, but still on top. Sometimes it hurts to walk, it feels swollen/lumpy in one main area (right where the bone and nerve were hit). When I first took my bandage (monday morning) there was a few drops of blood on the bandage, but that was it. I have not noticed anymore bleeding, matter of fact, there hasnt been any liquids coming out of it. But because it hurts so bad to walk, and it seems swollen in one main area...should I be concerned about any infection? This is my first tattoo I have gotten. I have been keeping up with aftercare; washing it with lukewarm water and anti bacterial soap, dapping it dry with papertowel, and then applying non fragrenced lotion; Eucerin (spelling?). I might just be over reacting because it's my first tattoo and I got it in a super sensitive place. But your feedback/advice would help!
Thanks!
P.S. The tattoo artist was SUPER sterile. I watched him wash his hands, and then put the gloves on and I saw the needle come out of the SEALED package. |

Hey you guys. I have this issue with tattoo healing that doesn't deal with any of my clients, but myself and I just can't find a way to fix it. I go through the nines with my tattoo healing process, but I have an amazingly large scarring and elastic skin. This causes my tattoos to scab over immediately and scar. While the one on my foot was the worst, I am looking to get a full back peice and i was just curious about your reccomendation on if I should. I don't want it to distort. By the way, my skin is genetic, no way to help it. |

OKay, so here is an update on my foot tattoo....last time I posted I said that I haven't noticed any liquids or puss coming out. but now my whole foot hurts! (it will be one week since I got the tattoo this sunday). My foot feels bruised really really really bad....when i walk..it feels like my foot is swollen or sprained. I have been applying very little A&D ointment, and washing it with Dove anti bacterial soap (non frangrence) and in the center of the tattoo...very light yellow almost clear liquid is coming out. ..i'm not sure if it's puss or if it's my body releasing fluids. Also, I have noticed that when I put ointment or lotion on it, some of the scab comes off...my tattoo is black and when the scab falls off it's black. Is that normal? The scab is fairely thick....and by the arms of the tattoo the scab has fallen off...and it looks fine. (I got the Dave Matthews fire dancer symbol) Or is the scab supposed to be a different color? It is VERY red around the tattoo...especially from the middle to the bottom. The tattoo does not feel hot...or have a warm touch. It was fine after I posted last week....but now it's got worse! Also, because it's winter in WI....I have to wear socks.....They are light weight and loose....but when the fluid is coming out of the tattoo....it sticks to my sock...so I have to peel the sock off from my foot.
I'm getting very concerned...and I don't have health insurance to go to a doctor......
PLEASE HELP!!!!! |

I got a red and black tribal tattoo on memorial Day weekend 2008. the black healed fine but I was allergic to the red ink. it was puffy, itchy and scabbed for a very long time. My body completely rejected the red ink. The red has completely faded (now it is flesh colored). It kinda looks like a raised scar. That was 9 months ago it's manageable but it still itches and gets dry sometimes. |

Reading this thread with great interest as I had my first tattoo last week on inside of wrist partly in rememberance of my best mate who committed suicide earlier this year. I had three stars, pink for my mum, blue for my dad & orange for my friend. The blue one is playing up, red all round it, sore to the touch a lump under it whereas other two are good as new. Could this be a colour thing?Aftercare was cling wrap with regular washing & bepanthen for two days then just the wash & bep 4 times a day. No discharge or anything yet so may pop back to tattooists tomorrow to get advice before rushing to docs. Will keep you updated. |

is hemp lotion/oil okay to use for a tattoo that's healing, or should i get something else for it?
also, i got my tattoo done 2/13/09 and it's been four days. should it feel like a slight rug burn? it's on the lower left of my back and comes into contact with shirts and what not. maybe it's just me being paranoid because it's my first tattoo.. |

ok..i got a tattoo on the inside of my foot toward my heal alittle over 2 weeks ago. i noticed it was getting infected. i didnt wear shoes or socks and i followed the after care directions to a T cause i knew how prone foot tats are to infections. and i know the artists work and never had a problem before. so i went to the dr. and he put me on an antibiotic called Levaquin...after a few days i noticed that wasnt working, so i went back and he put me on cephalexin, now ive been on that for about a week and there is still no improvement. the pain has gone away a bit but i still get throbbing at times, its still just as red as it was before. i have some scabbing where the infection is. the outline of my tat is totally gone. i have dark and light greens in my tat and they have faded to a gray color. i did use dial soap, so is that what happened to the color??
i called the dr. again today and hes putting me on another antibiotic that i have to start today. he said if this doesnt work i have to call the infectious disease center or something...
what will i have to do if this new antibiotic doesnt work?? and is there anything i can be doing to help get rid of this infection?!?!?! email me with any info u have dmc484@hotmail.com |

I got tattooed 1 day ago by an amateur who also happens to be my bf. This is my first tattoo, and I think it might be infected but I don't think his ego will let him admit I might be too. It's a smallish star on my forearm, and I'd say about an inch to 2 inches there is a surrounding area of red that's painful if you touch it and is somewhat warm. My tat isn't pussing or anything but this area is kind of concerning me. I've been using bacitracin and washing it. Is this normal or should I have it checked out or wait it out and see if it gets worse/better in a couple days??? |

I wouldn't let your BF tattoo you or anyone else with no Exp ...as too your tatt clean it 2 times a day using ivory soap and let dry for 10 min. and apply a very thin layer of A&D to it.... |

Sorry couldn't help noticing sobody saying antibiotics fight viruses which is not true. They do fight bacterial infection. Viral infections are totally different and cannot be treated with antibiotics.
If you are worried about your tattoo and it is red and tender and hot to touch give it a gentle wash using antibacterial soap and use a sparing amount of ointment such as tattoo goo but do not suffocate it. If there are any bacterial cells there they will simply love breeding under a warm layer of goop. It is also a good idea to rub a bit into an area such as the crook of your elbow just to make sure it is not a reaction to the ointment that is making your tattoo red.
Keep a close eye on the tattoo without prodding it, remember you should NEVER touch a fresh tattoo without washing your hands first. This applies to clothes too, putting on dirty clothes will increase the chance of infection. If the red area around your tattoo is quite large try drawing a small line at one edge of it as a marker as it is not always easy to tell if it has grown (especially if you are worrying and checking it constantly).
If it is noticably worse the next day go see a doctor, they will be able to give you an expert medical opinion unlike members of an internet forum. If they are concerned they will give you precautionary antibiotics as it will most likely be a staphylococcus epidermids or staphylococcus aureus (usually harmless bacteria found naturally on the skin) infection.
If you notice and discharge coming from the tattoed area or it smells a little perculiar these are the big flashing red lights of an infection so get to the doctors PRONTO.
These are not serious if treated quickly, a short course of antibiotics should suffice and if you catch it early enough an antibiotic cream may be all you need.
As reassuring as it is to hear pepole tell you it is normal and will go away, blood bourne infections can be life threatening if left untreated and the sooner an infection is nipped in the bud the less likely it is to ruin your tattoo. Excess swelling around a fresh tattoo is likely to warp it. |

Also, don't leave a tattoo wet. Warm skin + excess moisture is the ideal breeding ground for bacteria |

So I definately think my tattoo is infected. I got it 3 days ago actually two black stars one one each wrist. Thats chick grinded the shit out of my right wrist, and now its all pusy and red. I was puttin Tat wax on it, and just soap and water and now I'm using bactine too. Hopefully it'll kill the infection, and i wont have to go to the doctor. Any other suggestions of what i should do? |
