I?ve been drawing since I was a child. When I was a teenager I got into the punk scene in northern California, and began doing t-shirts, album covers and flyers, and was also first exposed to tattooing. I went to college at UC Santa Cruz and what I learned there convinced me of the hypocrisy of the world of ?fine art? and motivated me to simply find a way to do some kind of art for a living. began toying with the idea of tattooing upon graduation, and within two or three years had purchased equipment and began practicing on my good friend Kelly King, and believe it or not he still is a good friend. after doing a few tattoos I went in to a tattoo shop in Santa Cruz to visit another close friend Natasha Robinson, who had been tattooing for several years by then and had always encouraged me to consider it. I asked her if she knew where I might be able to come by an apprenticeship, and she replied that she didn?t know, but that she was leaving that particular shop and that I might be able to take her job. The rest, as they say, is history. Suffice it to say that the first year or two of tattooing out of a shop with barely any preliminary training were the most stressful of my life, and I?m glad I?m long past them. I owe big thanks to Kelly and Natasha, who were instrumental in my finding a way to make a living that has enabled me to be more happy and fulfilled than anyone has any right to be, and not starving!
