Daryl Distler![]() Email Daryl Distler I began tattooing in a little shop in Oklahoma with an apprenticeship with David Bennet, of Bennet’s Tattoos and Piercings. Yes, tattoos were illegal then in Oklahoma. I loved the arts, though, and thought this would be a great way to express myself. Some time later, a tattoo artist named Miller Cotton came into the shop. Through the grape vine, I had heard he was looking for an apprentice. I wanted to get out of Oklahoma and tattoo legally, so I gave him a call and joined his team and started a new apprenticeship. I started from scratch with small tattoos and many shop chores, as well as many chores at Miller’s homestead, such as cutting trees down, yard work, or any other work I could do to work off the apprentice fee. Miller and I went on the road often, doing a lot of easy rider shows and conventions. This was a great experience, as I was able to work with many new artists and pick up many new techniques. Later, Miller needed an artist to work in his Worcester, MA shop, and I jumped at the chance. I later ran the store from home. While I was there, an artist named Jeff Gemma heavily influenced me with his work and by allowing me to pick his brain (thanks, Jeff). I believe he is in Jersey now. Though I enjoyed my time in Worcester, I later moved to Missouri, to work in Miller’s other shop. I have to say thanks to Tim Ponitilo, he taught me a lot and was a good friend. I stayed in the MO shop for a few more years before relocating to TX, where I worked in a few shops before finding a home with Cat Tattoo in Addison, TX. I have been really getting into black and grey work recently. Bob Tyrell, Tom Renshaw, and Paul Booth (for that matter anyone out their putting out sick black and grey pieces) are all very influential for me. I love doing photo-realism, portrait work, color, and custom work as well. I love to give people exactly what they want. I thank you for taking the time to read my bio and looking at my work. I hope to see you soon, Daryl |
